 | | Annie K.: I had Pluto in mind too. :s I got 5A Inese (from Google) and 3D trade. Congrats, <hms>. ;) |
Dec-10-10 | | hms123: <Annie> Thanks. I am a crossword fanatic. I got <Astro> and <Inese> right away, but the key was <abaci>. After that I went to the list of players and found that <Sirin> and <Safin> were the choices. Then I skimmed their games for someone starting with a <B>. |
Dec-10-10
 | | Annie K.: <hms> I used to do crossword puzzles a long time ago... now I do number puzzles more often - Sudoku, of course, but that's simple and not really a number puzzle - any set of 9 symbols would do - my favorite is Kakuro, wot usetabe known as 'Cross Sums' in Dell magazines before the Japanese renaming craze. <but the key was <abaci>> Very clever, that. :)
Don't forget to mail ceegee with your address so they'll know where to send the shirt. |
Dec-10-10
 | | Domdaniel: I haven't worn last year's t-shirt yet, I think. There are only three days of (external) t-shirt weather here per annum, and I was wearing grey that week. Well done, <hms>. I had Janis for the Latvian javelin ... well, it *is* a girl's name, and there is a Latvian guy named Janis who throws spears ... |
Dec-10-10 | | hms123: <Annie>
<<but the key was <abaci>>Very clever, that. :) >
<abaci> is in about one crossword puzzle a week for me. It is a short word with useful vowels. <Orate out of order> is another pretty typical crossword clue as well. Thanks for the reminder, but I am sure that the <checked> t-shirt is <in the mail>. Or as <Dom> might say: <the Czech will be wearing the t-shirt in the mail>. Actually, he would probably say something more clever--it wouldn't be hard to do. |
Dec-10-10
 | | Domdaniel: It's embarrassing. I useta make 5x5 acrostic grids for fun. And I still do a lot of cryptic crosswords ... the ones where you work out that words like 'shippo' and 'proke' *must* exist, and then you look 'em up... |
Dec-10-10 | | dakgootje: Right, I shall write 'crossword-puzzles' on my to-do list for 2011. Ahhh all for my preperation for next year's clue-hunt! |
Dec-10-10
 | | Annie K.: <hms> useful indeed. <Dom> 4D was more likely to end with 's' (plural, and the Latin i-for-plural is not THAT common, abaci notwithstanding) ;) - so I woulda been suspicious of that Janis. I Googled 'Olympics, Latvia, Javelin', which gave me Inese right away. <I haven't worn last year's t-shirt yet, I think. There are only three days of (external) t-shirt weather here per annum, and I was wearing grey that week.> Heh. :) I haven't worn my shirts yet either (bought the set - good excuse to throw some money at ceegee, that I like to do anyway). |
Dec-10-10
 | | Domdaniel: 'Orate out of order' *should* have been Oater, as in Western horse-opera. The actual thing was just a scramblegram, wasn't it? I admit I never heard of those test flights, though. |
Dec-10-10
 | | OhioChessFan: I can <not> believe how quick puzzle 5 was solved. Probably my only winning shot this year. |
Dec-11-10 | | dakgootje: Well, had you been around at the time they were posted, then #6 and #7 had been fairly do-able as well. Heh, so far 2 clues have been claimed by kibitzers who have never yet kibitzed. I feel my chances dwindling - this has to be unfair in some way :P |
Dec-11-10
 | | Domdaniel: Missed another three overnight. All soluble.
<dak> and <Ohio> ... yes, they should have a special elite competition for us. Premium members with at least 5000 kibitzes. And questions about books, such as the Bible, Ulysses, Moby Dick, and Gravity's Rainbow. |
Dec-11-10 | | hms123: <Dom> And crossword puzzles and math. |
Dec-11-10
 | | Domdaniel: <hms> Yeah ... what happened to those <n^y + y^n - [year of game]> calculations? There's probably one flashing up and being solved even as I write this. Or they realized that people could write short programs to generate solutions. My areas of semi-expertise are gradually becoming redundant. Like me. It's one of McLuhan's laws: <a medium amputates the organ it extends>. Geurgle has amputated my brain. |
Dec-11-10
 | | Domdaniel: Bigodi! Missed again. I thought first of *bias* and Biyiasas ... then, as 'prejudice' can mean 'harm', maybe Harmonist? Then I 'reasoned' that they wouldn't *really* call somebody 'the most prejudiced player ever', so it had to be an anagram, or maybe a different sense of ... aaaargh. Bloody Bigot. |
Dec-11-10 | | crawfb5: Well, my approach is to try the simple stuff first, just in case. Sometimes it works. <dak> If you temporarily change your game viewer to text only, you can check games a bit faster... :-) |
Dec-11-10
 | | Domdaniel: <crawf> Well done with M. Bigot. It takes one ... erm, exceptionally fine mind to solve such a clue. And if *I* can't win, it's good to see familiar faces doing so, as I was saying to <hms>. |
Dec-11-10
 | | Domdaniel: The Latvians even put javelin throwers on their coins: http://www.bank.lv/eng/main/am/jubm... There's an idea for some thematic numismatics right there. Among my (very small) collections of themed objects are: Paintings of figures wearing gas masks (two).
Coins featuring fish (two, one apiece from Iceland and Ireland). One day I hope to have three of something. |

Dec-11-10
 | | OhioChessFan: With username:Ddomdaniel, you could have 3 d's. Your avatar in 3D would be quite intriguing. |
Dec-11-10
 | | Domdaniel: <crawf> -- <<dak> If you temporarily change your game viewer to text only, you can check games a bit faster... :-)> Wouldya believe I never thought of that? Slowness in crawling through lists of games has always been one of my problems.... |
Dec-11-10
 | | Domdaniel: <Ohio> There will be a hologram Elvis in every livingroom before I spell Domdandiel with three d's. |
Dec-11-10
 | | Domdaniel: I wish they'd put up a *really* difficult clue. I don't necessarily want to solve it -- just to have something to play with while waiting for the next opportunity. So far, *all* of the clues were gettable, but I was only fully awake and present for 2 out of 8. Typical, innit? You wait all day and then none come at once. Trivia fans (since this can't possibly feature in a clue): one of Carlsen's London games has a prime number, one of a pair of twin primes that is currently CG's highest. The other game is from the Women's World ch'ship. |

Dec-11-10 | | crawfb5: <Domdaniel: <crawf> -- <<dak> If you temporarily change your game viewer to text only, you can check games a bit faster... :-)> Wouldya believe I never thought of that? Slowness in crawling through lists of games has always been one of my problems....> Another little hint: I use Firefox and have an add-on called "Multi Links." All you need to do is draw a box and it will open every hyperlink inside the box in its own tab. I check the game and close the tab, check the game and close the tab... Believe it or not, clue #8 was the only one I've seen this year that wasn't already solved. I just got to it a bit faster than everyone else. These so far seem easy compared to previous hunts, but I think there will be a few tough ones coming down the pipeline. |
Dec-11-10
 | | Domdaniel: <crawf> Thanks. I also went over to Firefox recently and am still getting used to it. Didn't know that one. You were overdue for a win, anyway ... didn't you solve something zoological in '08? |
Dec-11-10
 | | Domdaniel: Ah yes, the *Bongo* incident. I'm also useless at sourcing images, unless they happen to be movie stills. And even then ... |
