   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Dec-15-10  dakgootje: Couldn't get anything working that way. tried some converting to hexadecimal etc as well but that did not do much good either..

10 bucks say the prize will be 4 months, despite all the effort :P

Dec-15-10  hms123: <Dom> Now I am angry. I spelled <Tsar> with an <s>. I got <hirsute>. I think I would have found <Zijun> with that much information.

Domdaniel: <hms> I had Czar and hirsute but failed to notice the initial CH. Was chasing Zilko and Zilli and types like that. Argh.

It was definitely a from-the-top clue: bland and wind have too many synonyms.

Domdaniel: I've tried hex, nonary, octo, various number systems; variants on four, fore, quarter, etc (Day vs Doubleday almost had me going); alphanumeric codes, substitution and others; quarters, Washington, the designer of the coins, the distance from Ecuador to Poland (don't ask) ...

Oh, and Chinese, Japanese, Estonian and Hungarian words for Four. There's a Negy somewhere.

Dec-15-10  hms123: <Dom> Could it be the 14th someone? Like the name of the 14th president or king or....
Dec-15-10
Premium Chessgames Member
Domdaniel: Not to mention 'one over four' = 1/4, thus Kasparov beats Kramnik (all-time ratings), Anand beats Kramnik (current ratings?), Carlsen ... Dunno. Not when they were set, anyhoo...

And much much more. Hey, this is what I've been asking for: something that *lasts*...

Dec-15-10  MostlyAverageJoe: The first two letters were enough, I think. This is sufficiently rare combination that I did not expected many players (nor many games played by them), so I just run down the list and got lucky:

Ziaev, Ziane, Zibin, Zidek, Ziems, Zierk, Ziese, Ziger, Zijun, Zikov, Zilic, Zilka, Zimak, Zimin, Zimny, Zinal, Zinkl, Ziolo, Ziska, Zivic, Zivna.

Dec-15-10  hms123: <MAJ> That was my strategy as well, but it didn't help that I had the first letter wrong.

Domdaniel: I had to keep both 'tsar' and 'czar' in mind? Does one come more naturally in American and t'other in Queen's English?

  Domdaniel: Lot of games in ECO codes A14, B14, C14, D14 and E14. I've seen a few ...
Dec-15-10  dakgootje: Objectively you strayed quite far from the original clue. Got a feeling way too far, but I have been wrong before :)

When I first found out it was exactly 1/4 I thought it might be the game in the DB which is exactly there. With 572k DB that is about game 143k, but perhaps there are openings due to deleted games - so I really would not know how to search for it.

Dec-15-10  MostlyAverageJoe: <Domdaniel: <MAJ> Congrats on your 10th>

Thanks.

<showoff>I guess you're not counting this one, which I did not click on purpose:

B Rabar vs B Tot, 1956

Dec-15-10  cormier: i agree about 5.Bd2 may only draw in The World vs NP .... have a good day ..... tks
Dec-15-10  hms123: <Dom> I am really not sure which spelling preferred. I think this is where the crossword puzzle experience tripped me up. I think the <s> is used slightly more often just because it leaves open more options for the crossing words.
Dec-15-10  dakgootje: Already tried the clue with the new hint domd? :)

Annie K.: It's not a game between the 28th and 52nd placed players on the current FIDE rating list... not even the women's list.

<Dom> innaresting about tz vs ts. I recall we discussed the pronunciation of Pirc at some point - I wrote it as Peertz, and you wrote it as Peerts. Same difference, as they say ;) - referencing the same sound (which is written as "c" in Hungarian, btw) - but I do prefer the 'tz' version just "intuitively". :)

Dec-15-10  dakgootje: There is a catalan sequence or something like that; but it was not the 2852nd catalan game in the Database either :P

The name of the person it is named after seems logical - but I ran through a lot of those as did ragh, so that lost some of its plausibility.

Moreover, google does not know the number and if it was a well-known sequence you would expect it would've been written down somewhere. So perhaps the sequence has 2 unknowns where this time for the other unknown a logical number like 1 or 2 has been taken. But that would be too vague.

Oh, I give up for the night.

Annie K.: However, Google does show something amusing... ;p
Dec-15-10  dakgootje: you mean that someone asked for help at some other forum? Yeah well, it is within the rules of the game obviously but its a bit.. It's just like doing crosswords and if you don't instantly know a word you grab the dictionary.

Annie K.: <dakkie> yeah, that's what I meant. Going to a dictionary is at least doing a *little* work on your own. ;p This is just tacky to the max.

Hmm, <Dom> is being very quiet, this probably means he's pursuing some trail...? ;)

Dec-15-10  NakoSonorense: This is great. That user even posted the hint on that forum!
