   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Annie K.: I was at 1111616 when the pageload stopped showing the new klu banner.

Is there anybody you want killed? :s

Domdaniel: <Annie> I was at 1111818 and coming *downwards* when I diverted off to try 1111010. And only *then* returned to ...717. Half a second, max.

I was ackshully away doing the cooking thing -- a more instant version thereof -- but still hadn't brought a laptop to the dining zone in the west wing. So I checked back here momentarily, saw the klu appear, and ... scheisse, ich habe nommer 1111717 verloren.

Domdaniel: <Is there anybody you want killed?> Wasn't it kvasir who beat you to the Swansong?
Dec-19-10  dakgootje: I was doing the cooking thing throughout the whole clue it seems.. had way too much veggies in the end, perhaps 500-550 gram, so if I would've chopped just a little less, perhaps I would've been in time, perhaps..

Right, from now on I shall only order pizza during clue hunts.

Annie K.: <Wasn't it kvasir who beat you to the Swansong?>

Indeed. Then again, as some political shrubbery or other demonstrated, you don't have to go after the actual culprit, so long as you get *somebody*. :s

<Half a second, max.>

Ouch. Hmm, coulda been a photo finish between us, coming at the klu from opposite directions, if Kvasir hadn't averted the imminent clash...? Maybe we should consider letting him live. ;p

Domdaniel: <dak> They do it on purpose. Keep us on tenterhooks all day while Amerika slowly wakes up, then slip in a simple clue when Yurp takes a meal break.

Dastardly. And the next one will be past our bedtimes.

Dec-19-10  dakgootje: I shall set my laptop next to my bed and write a program so that it gives a ping when a new clue arrives!!!

Now, first, I will have to learn how to write a program..

Annie K.: <dakkie> Heh. As I have often said, pizza is always a good idea. ;)

Incidentally, you still need to state your stance regarding the highly important matter of mustard...?

Dec-19-10

Domdaniel: <Annie> You are, of course, right. Even beyond our little micro-world, there could have been 20 others zeroing in on it. It's not as though it was hard.

They're slipping away, though, dammit. That was an opportunity. So was the piece of mystery music if I'd researched it properly.

Dec-19-10  dakgootje: that <is> an important matter!

I have in all honesty not had pure mustard in a long, long time. Mustard is traditional on Dutch croquettes [erm, these things: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped... ] but I did not really take them and mustard looked odd.. so I got a strange aversion in my youth for it without any real reason.

Ever since I got less picky I had it a couple of times in dressings etc and it is not bad. That said, we don't really ever use it.

Annie K.: Yeah... oh well. I also <almost> got the Compton one that <Nako> won. I was done locating the place, typed in Compton on the main page player box (nuklu banner still showing), and by the time the page loaded in response and I saw there was actually a player named Compton, with not too many games at that, I realized the player page didn't have the nuklu banner. :s

Fortunately for <Nako>, I like him. ;)

Annie K.: <dakkie> oh, ok... so long as you're not actually opposed to it. ;)
Dec-19-10  MostlyAverageJoe: <Is there anybody you want killed?>

Could be worse.

You could see something like this: https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B2... (which happens to be how clue #44 appeared about 20 minutes before <kevinatcausa> grabbed it), click the banner, and be greeted with a message that said <ERROR: Someone else clicked it faster...>

MAJ, sad owner of the worst clickage mishap ever, forfeiting a premium prize that was there to be grabbed (B Rabar vs B Tot, 1956).

Domdaniel: <Annie> I like that term. A *nuklu banner* is a traditional Turkish means of indicating that a gift is about to be presented ...

Gaaaaad, it's cold out. I just went for a stroll in search of supplies, wearing summer-style jeans with holes in 'em and a leather jacket on top. Big mistake. Then I chose to head for a shop that had shut early on accounta the weather, and hadda trudge back a half mile in the other direction, slipping on black ice on empty streets ...

I need some thermal equilibrium.

Dec-19-10  hms123: <Dom> How about a nice hot toddy?

Domdaniel: <hms> Heh. I said "in search of supplies", didn't I? I think I have the necessary ingredients now.
Dec-19-10  dakgootje: <wearing summer-style jeans with holes in 'em and a leather jacket on top. Big mistake.>

Absolutely. You are lucky not to be charged by the fashion police.

Dec-19-10  hms123: <Dom> How silly of me not to have realized the sorts of supplies one might want under the circumstances. Our pantry is usually well-stocked for winter so as to avoid the necessity of trekking to the store in adverse conditions.

Well, it's 20C here. 13C at night. Plus, <of course>. :p

You could visit... it's not *that* dangerous here, honest! ;)

BTW, <dakkie> has a point, as usual...

Dec-19-10  dakgootje: I suppose if you go to East-Europe and Russia they will teach you another method, called 'drinking vodka'. Keeps those nasty memories away as well.

I'm not a big fan of vodka - so I'd rather have the sun back again.
