   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: < so I'd rather have the sun back again.> I'll sacrifice somebody or something in a couple of days from now, and behold - the days will lengthen again.

<dak> You look like a shaman in that headgear - you could do your own magic.

Dec-19-10  MostlyAverageJoe: <Domdaniel: And hey, I've solved 4.2% of the puzzles since they started this, and I *could* still catch up to MAJ on almost 5.5%>

Replace <solved> with <won>, and then the possibility of catching up is correct.

In 2008, if not for the limit-of-5, I'd have had 8 (in addition to the Rabar/Tot snafu, M Al-Modiahki vs B Esen, 2006 and Z Andriasian vs I A Nataf, 2007).

And, being the kind of self-promoting show-off that I am, I am still looking for more screen caps this year :-)

<I need some thermal equilibrium.> May I recommend, if you can find it: http://www.amazon.com/MOCAFE-Azteca... (me, I got this version thereof: http://www.amazon.com/MOCAFE-Azteca...).

Domdaniel: <MAJ> What went wrong the first year, 2007, when you 'got' one and I scored zero? I think I only became aware of it halfway through, and hadn't worked out any shortcuts.

Second question: got any custom search engines for quizzes with real prizes?

  Domdaniel: Nuke Lou Reed?
Dec-19-10  dakgootje: blergh, the silence of the lambs-reference was obvious.. But I only searched for Hannibal, Lecter, Harris, Lamb and the 2 (!) GOTD's where the pun got used.. Oh one of these days.

Domdaniel: Argh. Shoulda just googled the damn moth before starting on Hades, Hell, Virgil, Dante, Rivers ... and Cork, where a man named Tundall saw the monster Acheron in the 14th century, according to Borges.

I'm still here.

Annie K.: I just got home, and see a klu has come and gone. Luckily, I would have had no idea anyway. Then again, I would have Googled it, and then... as <dakkie> indicates, ignorance is speed. ;)

<Dom> I just noticed the GOTD is saying much the same thing you mentioned. :)

Domdaniel: <dak> I'd still have run through Harris, Lecter, etc before dear Jodie. And Hyde. And so on. Plus Ripley, as there's an Acheron in Alien ...

You're right. The best reaction to a clue is perhaps "Wha? Better geurgle dat!"

Domdaniel: It's an interesting cultural shift. My knowledge, so-called, was still loosely *ahead* of the game up to a couple of years ago, especially when used in conjunction with the interweb.

But the rise of google + wikipedia has shifted the balance. Now it comes down to being a Dylan fan with a trigger finger.

Dec-19-10  dakgootje: On a slightly related note, have you ever done the King William's College quiz [or a related test]?
Dec-19-10  MostlyAverageJoe: < Domdaniel: <MAJ> What went wrong the first year, 2007>

I was mostly preoccupied with The World vs G Timmerman, 2007, then-usual evaluations of the daily puzzles, and paid relatively little attention to the hunt, although the comment here: W Wittmann vs Pavasovic, 1996 indicates that I did try some. I barely missed the next clue, apparently. Some of the 2007 clues ring a bell, but other than for the "poetic game", I don't have much recollection of them.

I started writing my search scripts around the time of clue #5 in 2008, barely missed #6, and started for good on #7.

Last year, I was too busy to pay much attention to The Hunt...

Domdaniel: <dak> - < have you ever done the King William's College quiz> I've *seen* it, observed that it looked tricky and that I knew a *few* answers, but never made a serious attempt at it.

There's a similar, but easier, quiz every week in The Guardian. I usually get a phone call from my brother to ask how many I got right, and then he refuses to tell me his score.

Dec-19-10  dakgootje: oy oy oy oy oy oy oy!!!!

I got a cluueeeee

Dec-19-10  dakgootje: I was just refreshing to see whether you had written another of your lightning-fast replies and <just> noticed a small red bar on top. Looked like the normal slipped-row clue but that obviously did not make sense. And place -> number is something I tried half a dozen times already so I tried that thinking "that would be easy" double-checking every key... and it was right..

No, I shall not be able to talk about any other subject the forseeable future.

Domdaniel: <MAJ> I was busy too last year -- could only dip in and out on certain days.

I see you believe others have developed MAJ-estic software. No need to name suspects, obviously - and there's nothing wrong with it anyway - but is that suspicion based on average solution times, or something more?

Dec-19-10  dakgootje: <And about time. ;)>

I know, despite big savings, I was at risk to run out of moans and whines for the year!

;D

Heh. :)

Glad to help. ;)

Dec-19-10  dakgootje: At this pace, before long I have more points on my to-do list than chessbucks.. Gonna take me at least 11 months to prepare ;)

Domdaniel: <dak> well done, congrats, you deserved it more than anyone ... or nearly annie-one...

I never saw that klu *at all* ... figured we'd have a break for a while.
