   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

O Nuklu.
You're running out of Believers, Nuklu.
Best do a favour now
For the ones who remain.

Big guy.

Dec-21-10  dakgootje: <Uh, I hope you have been planning this visit for <at least> a month, or two..?>

No, it was much more impulsive than that! Planned it last week!

I'm not really the person for long 70s hippie hair - nor do I have the guitar or matching clothes - so I actually go about once per 6-8 weeks or something. They even know my name!

  Domdaniel: Nice try, <dak>.

Types of past Klu that ain't *evah* coming back ...

1. Leet + its variants
2. Diagrams of actual chess positions.
3. Lolcatz
4. My fingers slipped, duh.
5. Um ...

There *might* be one more "most prurient playa evah loses agen" type Klu. Orr-Knott.

There will be another mp3 file. Perhaps even in Dutch. If you know any Nederlandish Calypso singers with numerical names, refresh that memory.

Oh, and #64 will be annoyingly easy.

Still room for that HARD one - though it seems they thought the last one was difficult, which displays a lot of misunderestimation.

O Nuklu.

Dec-21-10  dakgootje: has there ever been a lolcatz-clue? If so, I suppose annie got it ;)

They did slip a lot with their fingers this year though.

<it seems they thought the last one was difficult, which displays a lot of misunderestimation>

Indeed, I'm mainly kicking myself how I could be so stupid that I did not check alternative keyboards. Would've expected it had been the normal 4 months.

mp3-clue will probably feature in future hunts as well - simply because song-recognition programs are still fairly terrible.

  Annie K.: <Dom: <You're running out of Believers, Nuklu>>

But, dear, up till here you haven't actually <asked> for a klu to appear any time soon! ;)

<dakkie: <No, it was much more impulsive than that! Planned it last week!

Ah well... nobody's perfect. ;)

<has there ever been a lolcatz-clue?>

Yep, 2009 #34. But I wasn't around at the time. ;(

Oh, deities and their perplexing protocols! Where does the god-app plug in?

Anyhoo, deities seem to take pains to stress the randomness of time - <For ye Knoweth not the Day nor the Hour>, sort of thing - and even harvest/monsoon/spring deities (Ah Qaaq) insist they can't be relied upon, unless *lotsa* blood flows.

Ah Pook was here.
But I sent him away, O Nuklu.
Heed Thy Faithful, Nuklu.
Come to us when we have a spare hour or so.
And be HARD on everyone else.
O Nuklu.

Dec-21-10  dakgootje: That lolcatz clue was... brilliant :|

Praise Nuklu!

S/He even *dies* sometime on December 24-25. About as Anti-Xtian as it gets, without being *Anti*-Xtian.

I'll have to suspend my membership of the Harvey's Bristol Witnesses, just for the duration.

Domdaniel: <A> I enjoyed that little blast from the past. Familiar faces, familiar obsessions. Kewl.

I lurv the idea of <Phony> diligently checking the puzzle and winning a prize. TD may have been first to call it "pulling a TD" - natch - but it should go down in history as <Playing a PhonyBenoni>.

Or a *Coni Island Baby*, to integrate elements of both ...

  Annie K.: <Unless one can be Bi-credulous?>

I've tried that at some point... shouldn't be a problem, unless one of the deities involved is, well, <jealous>. :s

That's when I came up with my pet project, that I mentioned here once - the 'Deity Anger Management Netweork'. ;)

Dec-21-10  dakgootje: <TD may have been first to call it "pulling a TD" - natch - but it should go down in history as <Playing a PhonyBenoni>. >

Think that might've been my doing actually..

But a spoken word is like an uncaged bird - impossible to get back. You could obsessively use <Playing a PhonyBenoni> though and hope it sticks :)

Domdaniel: That *For I am a Jealous God* routine is fascinating.

Wouldn't a believer think "So, what's He jealous *of*, exactly? A better-looking, more powerful deity? Better find out Who that is, and sac something to 'em..."

Philip K Dick, in 'Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said' (great title, btw) had a scene where somebody sees a historical painting of The Ascension into Heaven of Richard M. Nixon -- with "God welcoming his 2nd only-begotten son" ...

They do magic tricks with numbers *and* with begetting, yunno....
