   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Dec-23-10  dakgootje: I had tried Short's opponent where he forfeited because his mobile phone buzzed because the battery was almost gone..

Yeah well, quite a lot of possibilities for forfeited games.

Domdaniel: <dak> Yeah. Ponomariov vs Agrest, I think. And I've seen it happen a few times, at less elevated levels.

I first saw the cellphone menace in action when some big movie came out in the late 80s or early 90s -- coulda been Terminator 2 -- and, during the middle of the press preview, a phone rang.

People started going 'sh!' and 'quiet!' and 'turn that off' ... until a young woman calmly *answered* the phone and began to call in a live report to a radio show. Loudly.

"Yes, Dave, I'm watching it now. As the listeners can hear, Dave, it's very exciting. Arnie has just ... well, I won't say too much Dave, but he looks as good as the first one, all buffed and muscly and robotic. Ha ha, Dave, no I can't see him ever going into politics, that's hilarious ..."

Then she was torn limb from limb by a gang of angry movie critics. I wish. But at least they banned the practice.

Domdaniel: <Travis> Hey, thanks! That 'Oirish Xmas' song was *totally unlistenable* but I lasted near all the way thru.

And it's the thought that counts... he said, adding a 'wee nip' of whiskey to his coffee ...

If you see Elsie, run it over. I'm being charitable.

Happy Christmas to you too.

Domdaniel: <MAJ> - < Particularly since there are very few games in the database where move number 7 deserved an exclamation>

Yep. I thought I was being clever, going through a list of 9-movers. On the assumption that (a) others would go for 7-movers faster, and (b) give the TN! on move 7 time to take effect before mate or resignation ...

Meanwhile, tpstar's win is impressive -- not among the best-known phone forfeit games, nor does it pop up quickly on any search for them. You had to know about it already, which I didn't.

Oh -- and I reckon you're quite correct in your suspicion that your database search methods are being imitated, though not equalled.

I suppose I can take some pride in being the last techno-caveman to actually solve a clue or three. And even I use Chessbase for name searches.

We could both voluntarily opt out of next year's quiz -- if they let us set the puzzles. I think I could be pretty fiendish in ways that no search engine could reach.

Domdaniel: Actually, if you do a database search here for games lasting 5 moves or less (a gambit being in the opening), since 2003 (cellphone rules with margin of error) and a decisive result (forfeit) -- you get just 55 results. Of which the winning game A Jain vs R Norinkeviciute, 2007 is 24th.

Sigh. I picked a bad time to go to the corner shop.

Dec-23-10  dakgootje: Crap, I was at most seconds to late for that one.. When I searched for Shannon it was still available I think and it was the 2nd or 3rd game or something so that was not long..

Sigh, well, guess that teaches that you should not play poker in the mean time..

Domdaniel: This. is. too. much. I missed the thing while making a coffee and rescuing the Aged P from one of those intractable dilemmas they get into.

A pox upon't.

Dec-23-10  dakgootje: thanks.. ah well, just like with that xxxxyxy or something clue I suppose, where you and dom where close.

If you google the number without the commas then www.freepatentsonline.com/2576040 is on the first page. But I first wasted time looking for some numerical solutions.. and a couple of times poker bounced in cause there is no stop on that :P

Ah well, better luck next year :)

(that's in answer to both of ya, <dakkie> and <Dom>). ;)

<Deffi> heh... how about KluLass? ;)

Dec-23-10  dakgootje: oh come on... I made a 'where/were'-error.. How low can you go.

Too tired, can't think straight - I need more wine to meditate.

Dec-23-10  dakgootje: <There's still 4 klus to go... >

I'll be gone by tomorrow afternoon for Christmas at family - so I'll miss the last clues - and in the night I am sleeping.. so don't really expect to see many more anymore :)

Dec-23-10  dakgootje: <<dak> Go win big at poker. You deserve it.>

heh, just got kicked out of a tournament in an improbably way.. Before the last card was dealt, I was like a 90% favorite to double up - but he got one of the very few cards to win.. Well, can't change luck or lack thereof.

Now a whopping $0.89 profit.
