   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Heh. That's one way. Another - in the situation I described - would be to grab the thing and do as much *spoilage* as possible ... "Hi Dave, a critic person here, your listeners will want to know that this time Arnie is a good robot, reprogrammed to protect the kid ... and when they meet, don't be fooled ..."

Click. Might hurt the box office though.

Domdaniel: Well, I suppose you could call it shopping. Two prezzies for me, one for everybody else. Which is a small list, this year, as the ice and snow deters visitors.

Domdaniel: < morning, or whatever it is> I can see the last rays of December 24th sunshine reflected on the roof of the house opposite. And the taxi that brought me home nearly didn't make it up the hill to the West Wing.

Does that summarize the aesthetic geophysics of the situation to yer satisfaction, dear?

Annie K.: Quite clearly, thx. :)

You can has central heating?

Dec-24-10

Domdaniel: < central heating?> Yeah, but it's in shock. So I'm sitting 15 inches away from a big electric heater as well.

Annie K.: Heh. I get ya... electric heaters are gud.

Trivia fact - Israel has no central heating. Of course there's no need for it, either. ;)

No extremes here. Usually.

Domdaniel: Coupla years back, I posted a link to a song (Guts, by John Cale) that featured a certain fword once. Admittedly in the first line. And *they* made it vanish.

I think it happens if somebody complains. I spent an amusing hour or so last night with other Idle and Palin stuff. I'd forgotten how hilarious 'Every Sperm is Sacred' is ...

'Ere, mate, can you get that on The National Elf...?

Dec-24-10  MostlyAverageJoe: <Domdaniel: <MAJ> and <Quythulg> I feel much better now. I'm in the same *zone* as you two, and I do it the hard way. Thanks.>

Most of mine (9 out of 13), I did the hard way, too, as they were not suitable for computer aid:

2007: #53

2008: #15, #20, #23, #28 (btw, I am not sure how #7 could have been done without computer aid for pattern searching).

2009: #13, #17

2010: #24, #34

For #24, I did have to get a couple letters right before looking for the matching names. But I also pulled a TD on that one (somehow I was convinced that the second word had 5 letters, and picked the letter 'i' from 'first' as in 'first-born' instead of 'i' from 'hirsute' :-). Pulling a TD may be not a 'hard' way, but is certainly a 'normal way', IMO:-)

And #34 (stealing the idea from <OCF>) definitely does not qualifies as computer-aided, either. And I'd have gotten #44 too -- googling does qualify as hard way, right?

Most of the ones that are suitable for database searches disappear rather quickly -- so there is where the search efficiency ("several minutes" reported by <SwitchingQuylthulg> for CQL -- vs about 7 seconds for my custom code) makes a difference. This year, I saw only the three suitable ones that I got and the Tsagan, which I missed; all the others came and went while I was offline or too busy to pay attention.

Domdaniel: <MAJ> I concede I'm not a total luddite - Chessbase helped me to find 'Sunjaikin' two years ago, when I knew the start of the name.

But, um, you're only showing what I keep telling you. You *are* very good at this, even without the superfast searches.

I've missed 2 certainly, and possibly a 3rd, by less than a second this year. Down to micro-decisions like which direction to check through a list of games ...

Another record -- you're the only person to win a physical object in each of the 4 years. I'd forgotten about the DVD set that first time...

Dec-24-10  MostlyAverageJoe: <TravisBickle> For posting the URL to that song you did, you deserve this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbVC...
