Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: <OD> That India Duck sounds wonderful.

Er, I don't have to *shoot* it or anything, I hope.

I'm not sure if I've ever even *held* a loaded weapon, lethal or otherwise.

Dec-27-10  hms123: <Dom> I don't think he is wrong very often either, but there are those who do (John Searle comes to mind).

Hitchens cracks me up. He is a piece of work. A bit like P. J. O'Rourke but with more alcohol.

Domdaniel: <hms> - < I guess it means that you speak the language of music without an accent.>

Au contraire, I think I have a strong verbal accent. Of course *I* can't even hear it ...

Yeah, the Hitch is a hoot, bless 'im. I've had no direct contact with him, but my brother knows him. They met in some drinking den in an Islamic State and bonded over obscure historical data from the Irish Civil War ...

Hitch plays the god argument as a rhetorical excercise -- I can admire such bravura performances, but I've never really trusted them. I didn't *do* debating at school or college, and I know the rhetorical tricks involved only too well.

Dawkins, on the other hand, gets worked up about the mismatch between science and various ontological arguments for religion. 'So what?' is my response -- *of course* it doesn't make sense, now ask yourself why. The really innaresting angles on this thing are the psychological ones, IMO.

Dennett grasps this, but still spends too much time mapping his philosophical tropes onto what he imagines might be the perspective of an unbiased believer. Which - as a little psychological investigation will demonstrate - is pretty much a contradiction in terms.

Most people don't actually have coherent beliefs -- but they hold fast to one system or another, out of loyalty, fear, hope, or some combination of these.

My rhetorical weak point - obviously - is that I prefer to discuss these things with those who broadly agree with me, rather than *fighting* those who don't. I'd be no use at all on a jihad.

Dec-28-10  cro777: NEW YEAR QUIZZ
Spacebar masters have demonstrated great creativity in the recent Christmas Quizz. What (multiple choice) question do you propose for the New Year’s quizz?

How many Spacebar Masters does it take to ……?
What ………does say about Spacebar Masters?
Is it true ………Spacebar Masters …….?
What kind of ……..Spacebar Masters are?
……. Spacebar Masters….2011……? etc

Dec-28-10  cro777: (Some ideas)

What Peter Zhdanov does say about Spacebar Masters?
a) The question of whether they can be worthy opponents is like the question of whether submarines can swim.

b) They are like postage stamps, they try to succed through their ability to stick to computer lines.

c) …………….

What Space Masters do say of Peter Zhdanov?
a) A young and smart devil ready to take over the world.

b) Some people are wise and some otherwise.

Dec-28-10  crawfb5: By way of winding down from the clue hunt, I was looking at the holiday quiz at chess.com (http://www.chess.com/news/2010-ches...).

Most of the prizes are memberships of various levels and durations, so I don't think I will actually enter, but I solved over half of them just noodling around this morning.

You might find questions 4, 8, 10, and 20 of interest, for various reasons. Question #10, which is a standard anagram question, has the wrinkle of having an extraneous letter added to each anagram. I wonder if CG might move in that direction at some point.

Even with no time pressure (entries close at the end of the month and ties are resolved by random drawing), there are still those who try to weasel others into answering the questions for them. I saw at least two examples of this laziness (one on yahoo answers and one somewhere else).

Dec-28-10  dakgootje: <GEB> I have actually had it on my book-pile for the last 1.5 years or something but just can not begin in it. Can't even recall if I tried yet actually.

Currently distracted reading the complete Sherlock Holmes.. in Dutch I am afraid to say - but that happened to be the copy we had at home.

"Elementair, mijn lieve Waatsoon ..."

Yanno, that has a certain style.

Dec-28-10  dakgootje: Ik betwijfel of hij 'lieve' zou zeggen ;)

If memory serves, the much referred-to quote has never really been said by Holmes. Can't have everything ;)

Domdaniel: <crawf> Thanks. I've decommissioned my puzzle-solving arsenal, and I wouldn't know an anagram from a grole in the hound.

Or a Spoonerism, for that matter. Well, maybe if I took a *little* peek ...

As the manikink statuek in Brusselsk might say.

Domdaniel: <crawf> I peeked. You're right, they seem easy and/or gettable. Some of the GM pics would hold me up, but the gang here would rip 'em to shreds in seconds, with or without a certain pic-site.

I'd wondered why somebody on CG was asking questions about a 1920s novel.

I was amused by the 'best move'. Clearly a mate in one.

And the starting position. Would you agree with (8!)^2 x 2^6 ...? A little over 10^12, I think. Could be wrong.

On the whole, I prefer the restriction/ingenuity *here*, where every solution takes the same form (gid or players) but there are many ways to approach each question.

There also seem to be quite a few hints dropped over 'there', intentionally or otherwise. Again, I prefer the mostly enigmatic silence of our lot.

Ik betwijfel het ook.

I suspected 'lieve' might not *quite* be the proper word. But Sherl's passions are known to include cocaine and violin-playing, and these sometimes lead to other things.

Elementair, innit?

Dec-28-10  crawfb5: I thought you'd like the Duchamp-Cage picture as well as the (talking) art set.

I think the general approach to the starting position question is correct, but I have not checked the math.

I do not recognize the young GMs (but of course recognized the dapper sepia-toned gent immediately), but I can tell the event from the backgrounds.

I see from some comments their quiz has gotten <harder>. If I can get over half of the answers in part of a morning, how hard can it be?

I still miss the ChessCafe quiz. Now <that> was hard. Here are the questions and answers to their very last one (http://www.chesscafe.com/text/skitt...). Unfortunately, the owner (who lives across town from me) got into a dispute with the national federation over sales and eventually sold the business.
