   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

   Jan-06-19 Anand vs J Fedorowicz, 1990 (replies)

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

Domdaniel: Wesley is a man of his word. Once again, I am impressed by his willingness to stick to commitments.

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Annie K.: Heh - I'm not sure how young <Dom> is this year, but he was 52 last year. ;)

<Ohio> you're in good form! :D

May-07-11  achieve: 19's your lucky number?

hehe

May-07-11  achieve: Oh, my post was intended to follow chancho's. What a delightful Jinx.

Leap year, anyone?

  Domdaniel: Nah, 57 = 3 x 19.

I said 'prime', which restricts us to, say, the sequence 41, 43, 47, 53, 59, 61 ...

And I said 'prime of form 4n+1' which limits it further to 41, 53, 61, 73...

And I ain't in my forties, sixties, or seventies.

That should be sufficient.

And thanks anyway, Chancho.

chancho: <Dom> I did not read through the thread regarding the prime thing.

My bad!

I just made a guess. ;-)

So a very happy 53rd. :)

May-07-11  achieve: 4n+1 escaped me at first. The dreaded 13 again. I need to brush up.

Domdaniel: Can never make my mind up about that Steve Miller song ... all musical and lyrical cliches, empty pomposity, everything that's wrong with classical guitar rock. And yet ... it *is* kinda catchy.

Domdaniel: In one of his Polar Bear videos (now posted on Youtube as <krakkaskak>) GM Henrik Danielsen has this advice: "Do something about your problems while they are small ... you can use this strategy also with money and with women".

Not quite sure what he means by small women. Lost in translation, maybe.

Annie K.: <Dom> so what have you been up to recently, anyhoo? :)

Btw, sweet, I realize that I haven't been giving you much feedback on the books I've read on your recommendation... but I don't want to "spoil" them for anybody else who may also want to read them.

May-09-11  dakgootje: I might want to read them - but I simply do not have the time, so spoil away! :D

Also, miss Annie, I got your massage - but I'm still busy draining 3 other bogs. However, we Dutch are fairly competent at fighting the she so perhaps in a few weeks..
