Jul-02-11
 | | Domdaniel: I won again in round 2, against the top seed -- one of the guys who gave me a lift this morning, strangely enough. And I repay him by winning a long ending in the French. Far too dull to give here. |
|
Jul-02-11
 | | Annie K.: Aww, give it anyway. ;)
Great to hear that you're doing so well even in the early rounds! U haz mail too... :) |
|
| Jul-02-11 | | hms123: <Dom> You are rockin'! But we do want to see a long French ending. we live for such pleasures. |
|
Jul-02-11
 | | Domdaniel: Drat. I lost the 3rd one. Against a bleedin' Dutch Stonewall. Should maybe have gone for the draw, but I thought I was winning in a sharp position. Turned out I wasn't. :( But ... the guy who beat me is now the only one on 3/3, and I'm in the chasing pack. All to play for. :) Two emoticons and a Jameson. Whatever next? |
|
Jul-02-11
 | | Annie K.: Maybe even emails? ;)
Just make sure you get enough sleep for tomorrow's finale. Do you know who your opponents will be? |

 | | Domdaniel: Did I hear somebody ask for a long French? The last 20 or so moves are reconstructed from scribble - I was in time trouble - so no need to tell me how many quicker wins I missed. The key phase was earlier, when he sacked the Re4 - dubious, though Black may be better anyway - and I found the right moves, like 20...Rab8. [Event "IRL int ch"]

Jul-02-11
 | | Domdaniel: <Annie> 90'/game + 10" increment. I didn't quite get as far as living in the increment, but the seconds banked kept me going in the French/KIA. I've even found an obscure German game that follows mine up to 9.h4 h5 [...h6 is more usual, but I didn't like it] 10.c3 b5 ... I used to play ...b6 in these positions, but the plan of advancing everything on the queenside is better. Here's the German game, Franco-KIA fans. Bg7 0-1 Good old Braunschweig. Morphy's insolence with the Duke is avenged. I *do* know who my next opponent is - he's under 1600 and I can't find any of his games anywhere. I'd be surprised if anything went wrong, though I can't expect it to be easy - he is on 2/3, after all. After 3 rounds, Bennett - my vanquisher - is alone on 3/3, there's one on 2.5/3, and I think four of us on 2/3. So two wins tomorrow would almost guarantee 2nd place, maybe joint 1st if the leader stumbles. Time will be telling. Though it seems to pass at a frantic rate in my event. The championship proper managed one round so far. Oddly, I've beaten 3 of the top 4 seeds at various times in the past. But now ... what did <Makbet> say? "I have lived long enough.
My way of life is fall'n into the sere,
The yellow leaf.
And that which should accompany old age,
As honour, love, obedience, troops of friends,
I must not look to have."
Pass me ma broadsword, I'll see if I can cleave the blighters in twain with a swipe o' the dirk. |
|
Jul-02-11
 | | Annie K.: Nah, you don't want obedience, that's boring. :) |
|
Jul-02-11
 | | Domdaniel: That's what I thought too. Dogs are a bad influence. |
|
Jul-02-11
 | | Annie K.: Heh. Safely done with that tour of duty? ;)
Mind you, 3 games a day, at 90 10 time controls, sounds to me like the sort of gameload *I'm* too old for. :s |
|
Jul-02-11
 | | Domdaniel: My plus score with Black, especially in the French, is becoming ridiculous. I can't remember whenever I last lost to somebody who wasn't at least an IM. On the other hand, there's my score with White. If I can win one more I'll nudge closer to, uh, 25% for the year so far ... <Annie> email will maybe wait a tad longer, plz? |
|
Jul-02-11
 | | Annie K.: <Dom> that's why I think a complete overhaul and a completely new direction, with White might be a good idea... Re.: <mail> sure, no hurry on the answer, but do read it plz? There's a Dublin-specific suggestion in it, is why. ;) |
|
Jul-02-11
 | | Annie K.: More on what I think on the 1.e4 thing: yes, others have been playing it all their lives and you didn't. BUT, you'd be learning it as an adult with a very good positional understanding - while those others may well have ingrained habits developed in their early chess careers, outdated/beginner level, never really reconsidered pet lines. I really think if you'd put some extra research and some practice into the 1.e4 openings (and it's not like you're actually entirely unfamiliar with them...) you could not only catch up with, but pass, those with a "lifetime of experience", that also means a lifetime of habits that are not so easy to change. You'd be looking at the openings with a "fresh eye", that can be a valuable asset. OK, I'll rest my case here, hope nobody trips over it. ;) |
|
Jul-02-11
 | | Domdaniel: Nah, I routinely get very good post-opening positions as White, playing the stuff I play. Even that Dutch debacle was promising for a while. My problem is later, trying to force quick wins in unsuitable positions. Sometimes it even works. I simply need to apply some French-style patience to the problem. Oh, and keep wrestling for the initiative. Simple, rilly.
I'd happily play 1.e4 if I could be guaranteed a Sicilian. But there is *no* continuation after 1...e5 that holds any appeal for me. And I've looked at a few, such as the Ponziani and the Four Knights. In my 'non-chess' years in the 1990s, there were a few friends I played casual games with - and I often played the King's Gambit, Belgrade Gambit, and Ponziani. As you say, it's not a complete blank. But I also have no sense of what is proper in a Spanish, apart from virginity. I'll be staying on in Dublin for another day/night when this is over, btw. So, yes, I'll check my mail before checking out and returning my Uitelky. |
|
Jul-02-11
 | | Domdaniel: ... and g'♘.
May tomorrow's be mine, on d5 or e6 or f7#. |
|
Jul-02-11
 | | Annie K.: Uh, check it before the tournament is over, more specifically. :) G'♘, G'luck! |
|
Jul-03-11
 | | Domdaniel: <Annie> Uh, remember when I said that my voice resonates at the precise frequency of background noise? Well, ah, something similar happens when a digital camera is used. I blur, pixellate, vanish into shadow. Only very special 1920s silver nitrate film stock at high exposure will catch a workable image. Think Nosferatu. Luckily, I *can* see myself in mirrors. If I have my glasses on. El hombre invisible. |
