   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Jan-06-19 Anand vs Fedorowicz, 1990 (replies)

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

Domdaniel: Wesley is a man of his word. Once again, I am impressed by his willingness to stick to commitments.

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Dec-19-11  MostlyAverageJoe: I did exactly the same thing and tried to look for the the earliest game by a russian player. The clue got solved before I invested much time.

Gotta put auto-refresh on 1-minute for the rest of the day. The premium prize is coming soon. Probably will show up while I am out, walking the dog.

Domdaniel: <MAJ> At least, if it's a genuinely tough one, it'll still be there when you get back.

Of the three hints already given, one provided info I'd already assumed, and the other two clues I didn't even see until the hint was in place. Bad timing.

I was going to use your auto-refresh gizmo, btw -- but, for some obscure reason, I stopped using Firefox a few months ago. I could restore it, of course, but ...

Domdaniel: During 2011, I've been called "a polymath", "Hitler", "cruel and strange", and "an Irish girl", among other things.

If I sent Christmas cards, I might construct a composite image out of these ...

Domdaniel: "Personally I find the ICC and internet chess a bit dull - it can hardly replace the real thing - in fact the primary emotion that tends to fly about is one of anger, as insults and swear words are thrown at one another - it's like a chess version of the school playground."

- Danny Gormally

Dec-20-11  MostlyAverageJoe: Congratulations! How long did it take you? I was away and saw the klu maybe 2 minutes before it was gone -- it disappeared about right when I found this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o... ...

Domdaniel: <MAJ> About 3 to 4 mins, I guess. As long as it took to paste the URL into Tineye, check one Turing game, about six Golombek vs Alexander, and about the 5th Alexander vs Milner-Barry.

I suspect others were very close behind.

I *almost* kept going when I saw the prize banner, having got so used to negative results.

OTOH, If I'd solved Klu #1, I'd be bemoaning my failure to get a 2nd one now.

Dec-20-11  hms123: Fabulous! Super! Enigmatic!

Domdaniel: <MAJ> I'd actually seen that Wiki page before, Bletchley being an interest of mine. I suppose it is for a few people here, certainly in the clue-hunting fraternity. But my tiny edge may have been knowing the names of at least four chessplayers without having to look them up.

And Christine Brooke-Rose is among my favorite novelists, though almost nobody reads her. Tres cryptique.

Domdaniel: <H> Thank you. I'll add 'enigmatic' to the year's other accolades, like 'polymath', 'Irish girl' and, um, 'Hitler'.
Dec-20-11  Slink: you're such a pretentious idiot

Could be juicy.

  Domdaniel: Nah, just dull.

Slink away and put me on ignore, there's a sensible little chap.

Dec-20-11  Slink: Okay, I take back 'idiot.' With apology.

Domdaniel: That's fine, then. *Of course* I'm bloody pretentious.

I'll still add 'pretentious idiot' to my CV. I think Mel Gibson called me something similar.

Looks like you've a prize as well.

Dec-20-11  Shams: <Dom> If Mel Gibson really called you that, I am bitter with envy.
Dec-21-11  dakgootje: Did you really solve a clue - or was that a different Domdaniel?

Domdaniel: <dak> and <Quylthulg>. Yup, it was really mine own self wot did it.

I was losing hope, after a day when I only *saw* one clue, just deciding to go to bed, when up came my old pals from Bletchley.

Cheers.

Your time will come again, batrachian phrontistery 'neath the benthic deeps.
