   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

Domdaniel: Wesley is a man of his word. Once again, I am impressed by his willingness to stick to commitments.

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: Thanks, Quylthulg. Old age, you know. Things slip the mind.

Or, um, have you found a way of working out the answer to the *next* Klu?

Wouldn't put it past yer.

Dec-23-11  brankat: Wishing You a very merry Christmas!

Domdaniel: Thanks, Branko. The large chunk of it extending into RL is not exactly merry at the moment, but them's the breaks.

On this, the last day of Nuklumas, we ponder deities and anagrams.

Hort? Dog!

Domdaniel: Hmmm. I wonder just when 'merry' became a euphemism for 'drunk'. The exuberant phase, usually. Hellish.

Was it part of the Dickens vibe or a later addition? An earlier usage - 'Merrie England', 'Robin Hood and his Merry Men' had other connotations.

Domdaniel: Nuklu sharpens the senses. I've occasionally been doing crosswords and sudoku etc in the intervals between klus, and finishing them up to 20% faster than usual.

Of course, this could be the subconcho wanting them out of the way, to get back to its main addiction, Nuklu.

O Nuklu.

Thy end-of-hunt reckoning won't be long now, O Nuklu.

Dec-23-11  hms123: <Dom> Merry Nuklu!

Or any nasty types at all.

Is it a sign, O Nuklu?

Domdaniel: "The hanging Rook came in. Unnoticed, he was being wined and dined."

*wined and dined* ... colloquial chess term for a piece that is encouraged to go on a capturing spree, leading to its destruction or that of its King.

Anderssen's 'Immortal' 1851 game vs Kieseritzy, where the Black Queen is allowed to take both White rooks before Black is mated, is the most famous example.

Domdaniel: Nacixem, Senor? Es the dreaded Reversed Mexican, invented by Latino computers when they play among their loco selves: FIBChess vs Crazy Bishop, 2004

Also seen in the games of Sr. Runde, the respected Norwegian human being. Is okay, also batrachian.

Domdaniel: OK. Enough amateurism. I'll by ghod memorize every last game in the cg database, along with its gid number.

At just 1763.5 per day, I could have the job done by Dec 10th, 2012. When, of course, the world ends anyhow.

Consider it a last year resolution.

Dec-23-11
Premium Chessgames Member
Domdaniel: Since there will be more games, I'll round 1763.5 up to 1764.

Which is the square of 42. Which is the answer to ...

Um, maybe the world really *is* ending this time.

Dec-23-11  twinlark: Merry Nuklu and a Happy Last Year, old son.

Domdaniel: Or one could begin with the current number of games in the database, 618992. Then assume that there are 365-13 = 352 days until the fateful date next year, when the 2012 Klu Hunt starts and the world is due to end.

And note that both numbers are divisible by 88, and 8x8 are the dimensions of a chessboard.

Will Kasparov seize power and hit the nuclear button? Or will it be President Palin, frustrated during her 15th compulsory presidential chess lesson and still not sure how the horsies move?

OK, that's borrowed from Mr Cohen, *The Future*. Lennie knows things.
