   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

   Jan-06-19 Anand vs J Fedorowicz, 1990 (replies)

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

Domdaniel: Wesley is a man of his word. Once again, I am impressed by his willingness to stick to commitments.

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: <MAJ> Yeah, my current internet connection is a bit wonky. So is my laptop, actually. But I'm living at a temporary RL address, so can't really fix these until I move.

Domdaniel: <alien math> Thanks for that advice. I'm not very good with images -- I prefer words, despite having worked as an art critic and film critic. But with your help I will now be more confident in navigating google images.

Domdaniel: I see I missed a couple of easy-ish ones earlier today ... tho' I'd probably have been too slow.
Dec-22-13  MostlyAverageJoe: If you remembered Blackburne's nickname, then #52 would be easy. I suspect Sastre knew it right off the bat -- the clue was gone very quickly.

I was too sleepy to think, checked one game by M Sparrow on the off-chance, and only got to googling "black death site:chessgames.com" when it was gone.

Domdaniel: <MAJ> I'd recently been looking at Blackburne games, coincidentally -- I was looking for annotations in descriptive notation, which still survive on a few of his games. But yes, the nickname seems obvious to me. But, hey, I was asleep, so it doesn't count... I see you've had some near misses, btw. Your day will come.

Domdaniel: "I put the 'sell' into 'celebrity', the 'hell' into 'hello' ... "

Hmm ... I wonder where that comes from...

Dec-22-13  MostlyAverageJoe: <Domdaniel: ... Your day will come.>

Alas, not this year, I am afraid. Social obligations piled up, starting today and covering most of tomorrow. My wife vetoed the idea of taking my laptop to the parties...

So it looks like <Switch> will become a solitary leader at 27, followed by me at 26, and <kevinatcausa> with 19. Kevin and Switch are done for this year.

You have 15 and 3 more chances, <BVer> has 15 and 2 more chances, <AnimusEtOblivio> has 14 with 3 more changes, and <JamesBJames> is done for this year with 13 total.

Domdaniel: <MAJ> -- < My wife vetoed the idea of taking my laptop to the parties...> I know the feeling ... a couple of years ago I brought my laptop to the dinner table, and suddenly a Klu -- it involved counting snowflakes, and was pretty easy -- came up. I won it, but I wasn't very popular at home...

Domdaniel: I'm not sure if I should bother waiting around for another Klu tonight .... there are only a couple of days left, and I'll miss them when they're gone...
