   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

Domdaniel: Wesley is a man of his word. Once again, I am impressed by his willingness to stick to commitments.

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Annie K.: I think <Switch> may still have some difficulty with solving Klus while asleep... ;s

Domdaniel: I see that <kevinatcausa> has solved 5 klus for the 3rd successive year. Along with 4 earlier wins, that puts him on 19, just behind MAJ, with Switch out in front. I'm still back on 15.
Dec-21-13  MarkFinan: Rubinstein vs S F Lebedev, 1903

An alright game here for you to look through if you like, Dom. Nice endgame play, but... never seen 4...Bd7 in this line of the French before!

Anyways, merry Xmas and a happy new year to Domdaniel and family. 🎄

Domdaniel: <Mark> Thanks, and a Hippy Xmas to you too. Treason's Bleatings, and all that...

That ...Bc6 is a bit like the Fort Knox Variation, so called because it's tough to break into. But Black shouldn't really play ...Bxe4 like this.

Annie K.: <Dom> have you done the Klu winners count for all years?
Dec-21-13

Domdaniel: <A> Not yet. But p.4731 of the Kib Café has a version of an earlier count I made.

Domdaniel: I think the table starts like this:

<Switch>: 27
<MAJ> : 25
<kevin> : 19
<Dom> : 15

Domdaniel: And MAJ takes another one. I was chasing a wild goose (Craven, Pullman, Wade-Davis...)
Dec-21-13  MostlyAverageJoe: I think you used http://www.tineye.com , right?

Try this instead: https://www.google.com/imghp

Domdaniel: <MAJ> Yeah, I tried tineye first, with no hits. Then I tried google - but I'm not used to it and may not have searched optimally. At that point I figured that the image was, for whatever reason, not searchable ... and went with my Pullman/Craven 'intuition'.
Dec-21-13  MostlyAverageJoe: <Domdaniel: <MAJ> Yeah, I tried tineye first, with no hits. Then I tried google - but I'm not used to it and may not have searched optimally>

It is quite straightforward: go to the URL in my previous post, click the camera thingy on the right in the search box, paste the image URL into the box that will open, hit return, enjoy.

  Domdaniel: <MAJ> Thanks for that.

I see, BTW, that one of the jukebox regulars in the Kib Café has made a comment about 'top ten geeks' ... could he mean *us*? And how can a compiler of sundry top ten lists call others geeks? Which is now an honourable term in any case.

Annie K.: Cute though. :) No, not that "top of page", you can't change post location on a page by linking. I mean the post that will be at the top of the page that loads for you - top of the screen? - if you let the page load in its own good time and don't scroll away while it loads. ;)

SwitchingQuylthulg: If you click this link and let the page load fully... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper...

...a section titled "Anchor" should appear at the top of your screen, even though it's in the middle of the article being linked to. The same should happen here with the post <Annie> is linking to.

Thanks, <Switch>! :)

Dec-21-13  MostlyAverageJoe: <Dom> Looks like you need a faster computer or internet connection or both. When I clicked on Annie's link, it loaded quickly enough that I could not really scroll away from the anchor...

Domdaniel: BTW, in a recent post on the Simon Williams challenge game, somebody - it may have been <AylerKupp> - asked about linking to specific posts. He'd been doing it with a complicated system involving 'search kibitzing' and a keyword. I'm not sure whether anyone enlightened him.
