   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: <dak> Too true. It has cost me one, maybe two, already ... and I don't get *that* many calls.

Hmm, maybe that's the reason? Oh wow, a call, gotta answer it ...?!

Unless it's an *intern*.

Dec-18-13  MostlyAverageJoe: <Domdaniel: I'd quite like to see a time given on clues -- time for posting, or solution, or both>

I asked them about this 4 years ago: chessgames.com chessforum

They did not seem interested.

Domdaniel: <MAJ> A fascinating flashback ... I note that you also suggested a prize for long-lasting clues. I've solved a couple of those in the past, as well as a few quick ones.

Dec-20-13  MostlyAverageJoe: Good one with the Tolstoy pal. I saw it for 30 seconds maybe and poof -- gone.

Domdaniel: <MAJ> I had about 5 mins, I reckon -- enough time to try out some wrong, but tempting, anagrams -- Laylo-Potts, Oll, Tal, Post, etc. Then I noticed Tolstoy, and bingo. Though as I slowly chewed thru the Urusov games I worried that somebody speedier would overtake me.

Dec-20-13  MostlyAverageJoe: <SwitchingQuylthulg: I think it would have stayed up for a while if you hadn't claimed it>

I agree. Despite of the clearly indicted anagram, this was far from obvious, and the benefits of having what many would consider useless knowledge are clear.

Now, if Tolstoy ever played Benko, then it would be a 2-second Klu :-)

Domdaniel: <Switch, Annie> Thanks, people. Reckon I got lucky, though -- that was always going to be a quickie.

Domdaniel: <MAJ> - <Now, if Tolstoy ever played Benko, then it would be a 2-second Klu> Heh. Well, I suppose I wouldn't have had to consider the possibility that Tolstoy went mountain climbing in Switzerland, or frequented lap-dancing clubs ...
Dec-20-13  MostlyAverageJoe: Sigh. The Kibitzer's Café is going down the youtube.

Annie K.: Hon, I think <Switch> and <MAJ> may be referring to the fact, unbelievable as it may be to you, that most people are not rilly that familiar with the list of Tolstoy's friends (that's provided they know who Tostoy was to start with...), and which of them might have been a chess player? ;)

Oh, <Switch> I just finished counting Klu solvers for this year, up to and including Klu #46, and it turns out you are already due for congratulations on solving your annual 5 Klus? Congrats! =)

I dunno, I'm kinda feeling even lazier than usual this year... ;p

Domdaniel: Is anyone tracking the all-time Klu lists, btw? Switch is a nose ahead of MAJ, in 1st and 2nd ... and I suspect I've been overtaken in 3rd place, though I haven't checked.

Domdaniel: This year, I think there have been more relatively straightforward cryptic clues ... and fewer pic Klus, audio klus, or brute-force-searchable klus.

Domdaniel: Strange. The prize for Klu #21 is the book 'Techniques of Positional Play', and I have no complaint with that. But the records here say that I already won that very book in 2009 -- except I didn't. I think I got a Morphy T-shirt instead ... no idea why.

SwitchingQuylthulg: All non-premiumship prizes from 2009 are wrong. Every year since 2010 they've been automatically replaced by prizes from the latest contest; currently, of course, prizes from this year's contest are given. This is - or at least should be - a known problem :)
