| May-31-07 | | samikd: <Bill> How are you doing ? I expected to see you in CO in one of the recent tournaments. Do you still plan to play in the summer, say, at the Southern Colorado open which is 2 weeks from ? Monitou Springs isnt that far from Santa Fe. I myself am not sure though... may or may not have time |

 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> Your game with <Elixir>? The one that ends with 18.Rxe6+? It's a gem. Very nice combination -- and an awful warning against the danger of getting your king stuck in the centre with bishops and rooks on open lines. The final position creates a strong impression -- black is quite lost despite the fact that four (!!) white pieces are en prise. I used to play the English and Mikenas-Carls a lot -- I once managed to steamroll a 2200 guy in a similar way, winning in 18 moves after he made a small mistake in the opening. But I've lost the score of the game, and it wasn't as neat as yours anyhow. If you haven't already seen it, check out Nimzowitsch vs Alapin, 1914 -- a similar idea, most direct and un-Nimzo-like. It shows the old boy could play flash combinations when he wanted to. |

And your BQ? |

EQ = Emotional Quotient
BQ = Braggin' Quotient (I just made this one up) |

|
| May-31-07 | | WBP: <Samikd> No, I've been too busy to get up there of late (busy, busy semester), but there's lots of chess in Colorado all year, I know! (And yes, Manitou Springs is but a hop, skip, and a jump from here!) I hope all's well with you. Do you live in Boulder, or do you go home (somewhere else) at the end of the school year? |

2. The Grudge (I hate that little white-faced kid--scare by pants off) 3. Audition>
This reminds me of a movie that scared the dickens out of me (no, not a Christmas Carol) when I was a young lad. It was called "The Night Walker" and starred Barbara Stanwyck as a woman whose blind husband dies in an explosion in his science lab (located in their home). She begins having these strange, very realistic, dreams in which the dead husband, with a badly burned face and the pale white eyes of a blind man, shows up occasionally. The tapping of his cane just sent shivers down my spine. Haven't seen it in years. It probably wouldn't hold up. The musical score was pretty creepy as well. Funny how I can still hear it in my head. Just checked IMDB. It's directed be the great William Castle, one of my favorite directors. It was released in 1964 (no, I'm not quite old enough to have seen the first run). I caught it later (much) on the late, late, show. Unfortunately, it's apparently not available on DVD. Too bad. A great director, excellent cast, and creepy score and script. What else could one want? Popcorn. Yeah, popcorn...with lots of melted butter and salt. Yum! |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Bill> you've certainly earned the reputation you have with me, sir. I callem like I see em. Sometimes I don't see too straight, but I believe I have it right with you now. Interesting selection you were considering in your forum for your <Kurtz game> project, and some typically challenging comments from <Eyal> as well. I don't think your project is superfluous, by the way. Have you downloaded one of those giant databases, by any chance? As both of us know, the <Chessmaster> database is woefully out of date. Plus, though the database here is great, there are of course way bigger ones. If you have a huger database, would you mind telling me how to get one too? Jess |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Eyal> g'day, g'day and hope you are well. I've been busy last 20 hours or so working on my editing contract, due Monday now as you know. I hope I didn't annoy you by making puns out of the names of all of the wonderful material you sent me! I have read your section on the <picaresque> as I said, and the first two segments of <Pascal's Wager>. I was going to read the <Ellin> last night but I was totally exhausted. I shall email you soon with <responda> (heh) and I have a buncha questions I wanna ask you as well. Dim |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Doctor, Nako>
Heh. Pretty funny stuff there.
<doctor>, don't go by "IQ" tests. First, the "raw score" doesn't mean anything. It is merely the expression of a percentile for a given specific test. There are scads of IQ tests, many have different median raw scores. Example- Stanford Binet test uses 100 as median. Meaning, if you score in the 50 Percentile, your "raw IQ" is 100. But Wexler Adult Intelligence Scale uses 110, I believe, as the median. So if you score 50 Percentile then your raw score is 110. This is why just quoting raw scores is meaningless.
And more.
There have been scads of academic studies that attempt to find a correlation between IQ scores on various tests and other factors, like how much money a person makes later etc. Only one correlation has been found so far.
High IQ percentiles scored before entry to University correlate to higher grades achieved at University. But even this can't tell us much about actual "intelligence." For example, what if a person enjoys writing tests? They may be likely to score higher percentiles on IQ tests. And what better personality trait for University grades? Liking tests! Check out <Multiple Intelligences> theory (GOOGLE it) for a much better IMO method for actually understanding what human "intelligence" might be, and how it might manifest itself. I have a high <BBQ>. My big brother taught me how to grill deer, moose, bear, and cougar (not a joke) to perfection. (He is a hunter, and the bear and cougar he shot and we ate are now <rugs> in his trailer by the river (also not a joke). I think you are brilliant, so consider your <JIQ> to be <google plex> (a very, very large number). |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Wilson> believe it or not I worked right through the afternoon evening and night on my contract, so I didn't even take a break to watch the <sports highlights> I just saw the Game result in your forum, and was of course THRILLED at the result. Plus, it looks like I missed the <game of the century> by my favorite player. Sob!! |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Doctor> Thank you, but I wouldn't even consider asking CG.com to put one of my games in unless I beat someone rated 2100 or higher on the Net or OTB that could be independently verified. BTW, I intend to return to OTB play this Monday or next Monday, there is a Chess Club 75 kilos away from my place that I wish to join. It is a BCCF sanctioned and run club, so if I played in a tournament I could get a "real" BC Chess Federation Rating, and also a Canadian Chess Federation Rating. Plus, if one of my games were put in the database, it would confuse everyone, since my actual legal name happens to be <NN>. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Elixir> got your move, will update our FEN shortly. When I play the <black pieces> in particular, I try to use as unusual an opening as possible in order to (hopefully) gain a psychological advantage over my opponent. Plus, I generally like to go "out of book" as early as possible so that I can try to steer the game into an open tactical struggle, though that's not always possible. I failed to manage this, for example, in my game against <Wilson>. Good luck in game 4!
First to 6.0 points wins our match.
First <chess match> I ever played in my life, and thanks for suggesting it in the first place. Chessica |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <My Dear Bishop>
so glad to see you again chez mow!
This forum isn't the same without your posts.
I will try to find the <Stanwyck> film in the "oldies" section of my video shoppe, and I will keep my eyes peeled on the TV schedule. We get <Ted Turner> channel which shows scads of old movies. Speaking of horrifying oldies, When I was a kid I saw Vincent Price in <House of Wax> and Bette DAvis in <Whatever Happened to Baby Jane> on TV and they both scared the crap outta me. You ever seen them?
