jessicafischerqueen: <Why NONE OF US is qualified to say that <Kasparov> and <Karpov> were "simply" <Mortal Enemies>>:

In the 1990 Championship, after saccing a pawn for a Queenside attack, <Kasparov> reached this position after Rb3 and promptly offered <Karpov> a draw, SCANDALIZING the chess world:

click for larger view

Here is the reaction of the live audience in Lyons directly after this earth shattering mystery:

"Chess lovers... observed the world champion and Karpov shaking hands... Now the two men began to analyze on stage. This was very strange to watch. They were both smiling, moving the pieces, chatting... The two players continued to analyze together. Neither could bring himself to break off the exchange. This meeting seemed to cut through mountains of enmity, which further heightened the confusion of the audience."

Go figure!!

Jul-07-07  Ragh: <mortal enemies> That looks one hell of a complicated position to my eye. They both shelved their big egos temporarily, and were discussing how they even managed to create this kind of mess.. each with a hope that the other knows something.

jessicafischerqueen: <Rah!> I think you hit the nail on the head there. I think they knew that ONLY they could possibly know what they were talking about... The only two people on earth capable of knowing.

How Magnificent!!

Jul-07-07  Ragh: <jess> how strange! But the truth is that both of them had no frikin clue behind this mess. It just sorta happend..
Jul-07-07  Dr.Lecter: <jess> Sent you that email after sometime. Apologies for that long delay. I've been too busy doing useless stuff, and no time at the computer. And not playing chess, obviously. But as <ragh> recommended, I'm still playing correspondence and blitz. thank god
Jul-07-07  Dr.Lecter: and like no computer i use has java, so i can't study chess, either
Jul-07-07  Eyal: <Boris Spassky, during a press conference before his 1992 match with Fischer, was asked if he agreed with Fischer's opinion that the Kasparov-Karpov matches had been prearranged. He answered:

"That's a very serious question, thank you. I can only speak about my personal experience during the last match at Lyon. In particular, the 19th game. In that game, the draw was agreed on the 38th move, and Kasparov had 15 minutes for his last moves in a winning position. I became suspicious, I got angry, and I swept the pieces from the board.

[...]

I was commenting on the match for the public and just before the players agreed to the draw, I was saying, 'OK, it's simple. Kasparov is probably going to win this game.' I was therefore very shocked at what happened.

After the game Kasparov tried to explain what had happened. His explanation was not sufficient for me."

[...]

Kasparov later excused the draw "on account of enormous fatigue".> (http://www.mark-weeks.com/chess/90k...)

Of course, it's ridiculous to explain Kasparov's miss of a win by the "Fischer theory"... especially when taking into account that draw was good for Kasparov at that stage of the match (game 19, when he was leading), and that the win is far from being simple and obvious - I suspect Spassky didn't really understand the position fully. According to Fritz, the main winning line goes 40.Qb2 Qa7 41.Qa2 Qa4 42.Qxa4 Nxa4 43.Bb2 Rb1 44.Ra6 e4 45.Bxf6 exf3 46.Rg1 Nc5 47.Ra1 Rxa1 48.Bxa1 Ne4 49.Re1 f2 50.Rf1 Ng3+ 51.Kg2 Nxf1 52.Kxf1 Rc8 (or Rb8).

jessicafischerqueen: <And more on the <<mystery>> of "friendly <Kaspaov-Karpov>>.

This time, from one of the "horse's mouths:

<Kasparov> "You have to realize that heis the only serious opponent for me. I am talking chess with the number two in the world. I wouldn't go to a restaurant with him, but who else can I really talk with about the games? Spassky? Who else can Karpov talk with? Karpov is the man who understands chess at the same level as I do."

jessicafischerqueen: <Eyal> what an amazing JINX!!

Did you read my BEEMAIL?

When Spassky accused <K and K> of pre-arranging the draw I just posted above, here is what <kasparov> said:

"Spassky feels people don't care about him anymore, so he tries to build his ego by attacking my character... or Karpov's. Probably he's jealous that we are earning three million dollars in this match. He says these crazy things to be noticed for a moment or two"

HEH YOU OWE ME SODA BUSTER

jessicafischerqueen: Spassky very publicly accused the two <K's> of prearranging the draw of game 19 IMMEDIATLEY after they shook hands.

jessicafischerqueen: I read your reply, thank you! I will try my "new plan" for a bit then to see if it cuts my "game fatigue."

I can't wait to play my two games tomorrow.

I'm certainly catching up on play with the Black pieces, at the least. Very challenging for me.

I'll take Mountain Dews if they don't carry "Mr. Pibb" in Tel Aviv.

Jul-07-07  Eyal: Btw, <Dom> indeed drew his 7th game (the position at the end actually seems very drawish, regardless of what "weird" things happened with regard to time management...)

jessicafischerqueen: Ah excellent news, in the sense Dom is getting more points. Now Dom has 2.5 in the IRISH OPEN
Jul-07-07  Open Defence: i wonder did <Dom> kiss the Blarney stone before the tournament ?
Jul-07-07  IdleNomad: <Blarney Stone> Indeed, and I'd be telling a lie if I said that he *had* kissed it. Sure, the Blarney Stone doesn't even have a tongue. Snogging rock formations? Not my idea of geological interfacing at all, at all.

I won the next game, btw, with my first French of the tournament. Vive les Frogs. Admittedly it was down at the small boys end of the table, but a win is a win. Another one and I might get back to 50%, even.

And then I might get my old persona back too...

Jul-07-07  Open Defence: have you tried Shatranj ?
Jul-07-07
Premium Chessgames Member
jessicafischerqueen: Hi <Deffi> no, but I read about it. I understand from your profile that you are an expert!!

I have tried <Seirwan> chess, which is an adaptation of <Capablanca Chess>.

You play on the same board, but as you move pieces off your back rank, you may replace them with your <Hawk- moves like a bishop AND a knight> or your <Elephant- moves like a rook AND a knight>.

Each side gets one Hawk and one Elephant.

I liked it!! The tactics are MURDEROUS and there are very few endgames.

All the rest of the rules are the same as in regular chess.

What's Shatranj like?

Is it as fun to play as chess?

Jul-07-07  Open Defence: Shatranj is slow and maneuvering.. especially since pawns only move 1 square... there is deep strategy and move order is crucial sometimes.. the ancient Arab texts had forced variations in certain standard openings leading to known positions called <Tabiyas> leading upto over 40 moves! but the puzzles are fun... Shatranj puzzles are more of brain teasers.. as the solution may not be obvious.. as in the 1000 year old puzzle i triumphantly claim to have solved today.. so today is officially Deffi bragging day...
