Jul-17-07  brankat: Speaking of the good old days and <kvcs>, I'm embarrassed to say that, for some reason, I was one of the very few people on the site (perhaps the only one), she actually liked. In those days I used to be polite :-)
Jul-17-07  Open Defence: well i only interacted with <Molly> once... she asked a question about Shatranj I believe.. didnt dislike her.. just the style of posting never made me want to read it much
Jul-17-07  brankat: <jessica> Btw, whose move is it now?

jessicafischerqueen: <Branko> no idea, I'm too busy watching "Frasier" on TV.

What a great show!!

Jul-17-07  hitman84: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8TZ...

This is an absolute classic!

LOL!

Jul-17-07  hitman84: The final scene of the episode is just too good! Fraiser's father loses to Daphne in a checker game!

jessicafischerqueen: <Hitman> thanks for the <Hilarious> links mate! Last night I saw the last episode in the <Frasier> series on TV. I cried! Btw, did you know that Frasier and Niles play chess, and that they buy all their chess stuff at the <Rook Nook>?

Heh.

I buy all my chess stuff at the local <Salvation Army>.

Jul-17-07  hitman84: <Btw, did you know that Frasier and Niles play chess, and that they buy all their chess stuff at the <Rook Nook>?>

I guess they didn't have internet back then. E-bay is a great place to hangout and buy stuff, I do monitor shopping there.

Jul-17-07  Eyal: <Jess> Re our discussion about tablebases and "solving" chess, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endgam.... Among other things, I gather that the preparation of these tablebases is done by "retrograde analysis", and it doesn't really have to do much with speed of computers. According to this article - though I really don't know how reliable it is - the expected date for complete 7 piece tablebases is 2015, so there's quite a lot of time yet until we reach 32 piece tablebases...

jessicafischerqueen: <Eyal> here is the article on the theoretical "perfect 32 piece table base" from <Chessbase>.

http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

<lot of time>? Maybe, maybe not. It only takes one unforseen technological breakthrough to dramatically speed up any technical challenge.

Just think of the <nanobots> they have now that can swim right up your bum and destory your <hemhorroids> with <minature laser guns>!

And that's just one example.

<I do monitor shopping there.>

Do you mean shopping for <monitor lizards>?

Can you also get an <emu> or a <platypus> on <e-bay>?

Who knew?

Jul-17-07  Eyal: I read it, thanks - it also describes the process of backwards analysis. But again, from what I understand, there are deeper problems involved in increasing the coverage of tablebases than just increasing the speed and brute calculating force of computers.

jessicafischerqueen: Yes, but these problems could be solved unexpectedly by minature robots, as I explained with my "bum" example.

Course, I predicted we'd all be living in <Uranus> by now, so what the hell do I know?

I left you a message in your house.

heh

Jul-17-07  Eyal: Btw, there's a tablebase expert who was active here during the Nickel game: Brent Baccala chessforum
Jul-17-07  achieve: Chris Wenham:

<Naturally there's no fun in playing a game you can never win, but it isn't always necssary to “solve” the game, the way Tic-Tac-Toe has, before that happens. <Chess will never be solved by a computer built today or a century from now, but if <Kurzweil> is right then we'll lose interest within a decade.> IBM scrapped its Deep Blue project after it beat Kasparov, and it's likely the makers of Deep Fritz will move on to other things after they can get better than a tie against the likes of Vladimir Kramnik.>

Jul-17-07  mandar: <jess>U there??

jessicafischerqueen: <Niels> thanks for the link! an interesting addition to such a perennially concerning, yet fascinating topic for us chess folk. The main thing is to remain calm, however, due to the new <nanobot tranquilizer> technology.

The robots swim into your "brain canal" and convince you not to worry about chess machines.

They]re not on the market yet, though.

Personally I'm not letting any doctors put <mini robots> in my brain or up my bum.

And what's with all these <Uranus> jokes you guys? Minds out of the gutters please!!

<mandar> yes, vaguely. Did you send me a EMU? You want to play chess on the Wonderful Wacky World of Wahoo?

Jul-17-07  mandar: <jess>I have no idea of what u r saying... If u r there then come to Intermidiate Lounge 2. on www.yahoo.com
Jul-17-07  achieve: <Personally I'm not letting any doctors put <mini robots> in my brain or up my bum.>

Heh Why do I like that attitude so much?

Cuz it's true!!!!

Jul-18-07  WBP: Morning <Jess>. Hey, it's two days away from Banmfphaloosa. I can't wait! I have heard that the flies and mosquitoes are murder this time of year, but any little critter that bites me will get the arthopodic equivalent of 150 pints of IPA; peel right over dead drunk. Bears--or Sasquatch--might be a different problem, but I'll work something out.

I realize my posts of late have veered away from chess--not much time to do much except miscellaneous kibitzing. But that shall change upon our return (I hope). And I'm sure thay have Internet access at the hotels, so I'll be in touch with everyone.

jessicafischerqueen: I'm afraid there's not actually any elextricity in BAMF, <Bill>, but I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Also, your mulitple army of multiple friends will probably look after things nicely while you are gone.

Don't forget to read William Goldman's <Magic>, or at the least view the film.

My meaning will become clear...

Batchimeg Tuvshingtugs

Jul-18-07  WBP: <Jess> No electricity? How am I to dry my hair? (Or my hare?)

<Also, your mulitple army of multiple friends will probably look after things nicely while you are gone.> Oh yes. The puppets will have the run of the house for a week. can't wait to see what they do.

I have seen Magic--Anthony Hopkins,no? Very apt, I'm afraid!
