  jessicafischerqueen: Profanity? What profanity?

I've been swearing my head off for months now.

OH THAT profanity.

Well OK then...

Jul-19-07  Red October: btw i doubt any computer is 100% from one country.. it probably has the chips from China, mouse from God knows where....

  jessicafischerqueen: <Communist anti-Fischer Apparat <<chick>>>:

No kidding, my Mom is buying me a new Laptop to take to Asia.

What kind should I get, in your opinion?

I had a DELL before but its a flimsy POS.

jessicafischerqueen: She wants to spend around 1000 dollars Canadian and I don't require large memory since all I use a Laptop for is Word Processing, downloading tunes, and Going to chess sites on the Internet.

In fact, I require almost zero memory.

But I want something sturdy that won't break if you, say, drop it down the stairs by accident.

(hint- don't do that. I did that to my Dell and he didn't appreciate it much)

Jul-19-07  Red October: I guess HP is pretty good, I have 2 of them and they dont give me much trouble... i think Mac Books are also around $1000 but limited chess engine options (if you want a chess engine) .... sturdy laptops are Toshibas IMHO but they are more expensive... Sony Vaios dont seem to have the processing power but you dont seem to want much of that...

  jessicafischerqueen: Dell doesn't use <mice>.

They import <Mongolian Gerbils>, who run around on a little wheel to power the FAN. Which explains why Dell FANS don't work very well.

Plus the seeds make the keys stick.

Jul-19-07  Ragh: <Profanity? What profanity? > Alright, here is your fateful message in Eyal's forum that faced the wrath of CG. I X'ed out part of the profanity, so lets see if it survives.

jessicafischerqueen: You know, in terms of "genre," strictly speaking, I wouldn't call the preceding story/fragment/chapter a horror story, but it's certainly mor horrifying than almost any "horror story" I've ever read.

I have to clean my car today and my Mom's going apeXXXX on me this morning so I'm not sure If i'll be able to go in the talk box at NOON or not. She just poked her head in and yelled at me a second ago. Heh.>

Jul-19-07  Red October: oh $1000 canadian... i think Acer are also pretty good for basic decent configurations .... not sure about reliability though.. if you are taking it to Asia you might want to get a worldwide warranty... or maybe buy it in Asia... maybe go to the web sites of HP / Acer / Dell etc and compare the local prices with that of Canada and see.. due to import duties etc the price may be cheaper in countries like China, Singapore etc...

jessicafischerqueen: Wow thanks <Deffi>. This Mac Book sounds good.

Would it be able to run a <Fritz>?

I'm getting a <Fritz> just before I go to Asia.

What is "processing power"?

I just need something that will run the instructional videos on <Fritz> and the Engine itself etc.

Apart from that, I need almost no "memory."

I got my Dell for 1,100 Canadian, but 500 of that was for a "memory stick" that I never came close to needing.

So I could have got it for 600 bucks.

jessicafischerqueen: Deffi My <job finding company> told me to buy the Laptop here for sure.

Apparently in South Korea and Taiwan the price of "English language configured" Computers is HUGE.

They referred to the non-English configured computers as "THE BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH."

But thanks so much for the tips.

Acer, Mac, HP, Toshiba and no way I'm buying a DELL ever again.

I will "go to the Net".

jessicafischerqueen: <Rah!> That explains it. They have a filter for the <....> word, they really hate it for some reason.

But they let you say really terrible other things. Not that I'm interested in such freedoms.

Play ball! Safety in numbers, I say.

Jul-19-07  Red October: <Would it be able to run a <Fritz>? > no Fritz needs windows.. so if you want Fritz then drop the Mac idea.. probably a Notebook PC from HP, Toshiba, Dell, Acer... shop around on the internet (window or monitor shopping) .. compare prices.. if you are running Fritz you might want to ensure at least 1GB RAM if your OS is Win XP and 2GB RAM if you are running Windows Vista ... (though you could go for lower RAM but it would affect the speed)

this is the recommended system requirements for Fritz per Chessbase

<Recommended: Pentium III 1.4 GHz or higher, 256 MB RAM, Windows Vista, GeForce5 or compatible graphics card with 64 MB RAM or higher, 100% DirectX compatible sound card, Windows Media Player 9, DVD ROM drive. Fritz is Windows Vista ready! >

though it says 256MB you might want to ask around.. <Eyal> has Fritz right ? but from what I have heard 1GB RAM would be cool and it would not make the computer slow when you run any other application like if you are online at the same time...

<Pentium III 1.4 GHz or higher> see that part.. thats the speed of the computers processor .. you have 2.0GHz, 1.86GHz etc..

and you would need a computer with a DVD drive for the Fritz DVDs...

jessicafischerqueen: Wow thank you SO MUCH <Deffi>!!

Now I can be a "informed shopper".

Compared to five minutes ago, when I was a "totally ignorant shopper."

Jul-19-07  Red October: <jess> try this...
http://shopping.hp.ca/cStoreCA/Base...

one around $1000 CAD seems interesting if you dont mind AMD chips..

there are some Compaqs too

http://shopping.hp.ca/cStoreCA/Base...

though I bought my last Compaq some time ago.. very nice laptop but I dont know how they are nowadays

Jul-19-07  Red October: btw dont go around shouting <<Batchimeg Tuvshingtugs>> in Korea... they were invaded by Mongols once..
Jul-19-07  Red October: yeah best of luck I'm sure you will do fine on this interview as well, just dont show them this forum ;-p

Jul-19-07  Ragh: <Jess> The Montreal Super-GM chess tournament is underway. Apparently, I didn't knew Canadiens allow dogs to play in chess tournaments too. If you dont believe, look at the website below for participant pictures that shows two dogs (german shepherd twins?) along with 10 super GMs. http://www.monroi.com/tournamentgat...

jessicafischerqueen: <Rah!> actually <dogs playing chess> has a long history.

The first <Russian Dog in Space>, for example, <Laika>, was a talented GM before she got sidetracked by learning how to operate the "landing gear."

jessicafischerqueen: Heh I passed the phone interview now they are going to find me a job.

Wheee!

OK "don't mention the war."

I understand they're still a little testy about that.

I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it.

I STARTED IT? YOU INVADED MANCHURIA!

oops what a giveaway

jessicafischerqueen: Well I'm off to celebrate.

Unfortunately, since I quit drinking, dope, coke, aviation fuel, sniffing glue, smoking, and imbibing extract from the pineal gland of the male adolescent iguana, my "celebration" may consist merely of reading about <Bobby Fischer> under a shady <Cedar tree>.

Oh well, can't be bad!

See you all later!!
