Aug-01-07  achieve: One silly question:

is it

he has proved

or

he has proven (to be...)

I need to..

jessicafischerqueen: He has proved a fierce competitor.

He has proven to be a fierce competitor.

Each phrase uses a slightly different verb form but they mean exactly the same thing. IE, the "time marker" is the same for both forms.

However, if you use the "proven" version you MUST include "to be" with it.

Except for one thing....

You DON'T HAVE TO INCLUDE IT!!

You can leave it out.

As in "He has proven a great competitor" (over the course of a vaguely circumscribed period in the past)

"He has proved a great competitor."

Yep.

They are interchangeable.

And yet different verb forms!!!

English is crazy.

Aug-01-07  achieve: <However, if you use the "proven" version you MUST include "to be" with it.

Except for one thing....

You DON'T HAVE TO INCLUDE IT!!> LMAO!!!

Final verdict is they ARE interchangable?

Thank you for your thorough answer! ;-p

  jessicafischerqueen: No worries.

I discovered something.... I just came back from another walk, and when I walk in the middle of the night <Fatso> follows me and trots beside me like a freaking <dog>!!

He won't do it during the day cuz there's too many cars and people and too much noise.

Plus I was walking barefoot and it's cool on my feet.

It was a hundred degrees here today!!

I want to sleep all day, play/study chess in the evening, and walk barefoot all night with <Fatso>.

So I am going to buy a lottery ticket.

Aug-01-07  achieve: <Jess> Branko is OK!!! Thank goodness..

I posted some on the <famous draw> over at my place.

<I want to sleep all day, play/study chess in the evening, and walk barefoot all night with <Fatso>.

Sounds a brilliant idea to me.. Start working for New In Chess and you won't even have to buy the lottery ticket!

jessicafischerqueen: Yes they have to <filter> a lot to keep the site safe!!

Hey <Doctor> I got a contract offer today from the Korean Ministry of Education.

Heh.

<Niels> the phone call just directed me to contact yet another government organization....

Oh well that's how it goes.

Aug-01-07  Dr.Lecter: Did you?

Is it time for me to get an offer from the Canadian Ministry of Education?

I'm sure I'll make a fine teacher. I can already imagine. Pop quiz every 10 minutes, mid-term everyday. Homework on college subjects (of course, I'll be teaching elementary kids)

Aug-02-07  achieve: <the phone call just directed me to contact yet another government organization....

Oh well that's how it goes.> Yes, they seem to run like a well oiled machine..

< is that why they filter so many words?> Even a word like "title" doesn't show up on the chessforum-page because the first three letters supposedly make up a "bad language" word.. ;-)

  jessicafischerqueen: Hi <Niels> LOL.

Thanks for keeping me company to all hours last night.

It was wonderful to try to help you analyze the "big game" and it helped me to stay up till it was time to make the call.

The <Korean Schoolboard> appears to have mistakenly offered me a rather good job in Daegue.

Apparently, after a whole day today of scrambling on the phone to get documents delivered, etc., It looks like I have the job.

(crosses fingers)

ACK@@

Aug-02-07  achieve: WHOOOO! Exciting times! Making important phonecalls, and the WAITING, can be so tiring I Imagine... But this sounds good now! (crosses fingers too)

And I have done some research on <Kasparov> responding to 1.d4 in 2004 and 2005. I am preparing something on a very interesting game as we speak.. will post that in my forum.

When will you be more or less sure on the job/details ?

Aug-02-07  twinlark: Ahhchooo! damn it, so much for lurking.
Aug-02-07  achieve: Cheers!

Aug-02-07  achieve: <proved/proven> - <English is crazy!>

<<<<<>>>>We all thought that the prosecutor had proved her point. Or should she have proven her point? Actually it can be either. The verb prove has two past participles: proved and proven. Proved is the older form. Proven is a variant. The Middle English spellings of prove included preven, a form which died out in England but survived in Scotland, and the past participle proven probably arose by analogy with verbs like weave, woven and cleave, cloven. Proven was used originally in Scottish legal contexts, such as The jury ruled that the charges were not proven. <<<In the 20th century proven has made inroads into the territory once dominated by proved, so that now the two forms compete on equal footing as participles.>>> However, when used as an <adjective before a noun>, proven is now the more common word: a proven talent.>

I'm bad.. I googled.

Aug-02-07  euripides: <jess> congratulations on the job. Your students will be lucky.

I have taught economics quite a bit in Africa and also students from all over the world in the UK. I have the impression that the Korean system is very solid indeed on technical competence but does not always encourage original writing or thought. Your students may never have been asked to write an essay; easing them into this may be as important as any formal instruction.

Aug-02-07  WBP: <Jess> Congratulations on the job situation! Sounds though like the notice is relatively late--you'll have to start packing soon (I'm assuming they're on similar school calendar as Canada/US). We'll follow your adventure with great interest.

Saw your posts on the Fischer page regarding the Bobby Fischer vs. the Rest of the World Book. I'm assuming, since you're Fischer's daughter, that you know Frank Brady's Profile of a Prodigy. Another terrific book is Russians vs. Bobby Fischer--full of all kinds of interesting anecdotes, interviews (with Russian players), some pictures (including a delightful one of what appears to be a drunken and bludgeoned Tal [he has a band aid on his head] and Fischer with their arms around each other, Tal adjusting a medal around Fishcer's neck [or else Fischer's tie], and so forth.

Also, are you aware of a novel called Master Prim, based on Fischer? It's about--get this--a chess prodigy! (Can't recall the author--it's mentioned in Brady's book.)
