| Oct-31-07 | | achieve: Hela Hola! <Jess>!! I'm without avatar - will explain in the car
Busy week?
For some relaxing I can recommend a few more providers of analysis of games on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/Majnu2006 -- 61 videos
http://www.youtube.com/user/ChessNe... -- 8
http://www.youtube.com/user/krakkas... -- over 200
http://www.youtube.com/user/Comtede... -- 6
Chances you are already subscribed to them, but they were new to me... You'll have had at least half your workweek by now and I assume those Korean kids have kept you more than busy... Hope to see you back here soon! Regards,
Me |

| Oct-31-07 | | WBP: Hey <Jess> Happy Halloween!!! Beware of slashers, werewolves, and vampires. (What kind of similar legends do they have in Korea? Here in New Mexico, they have La Llorena, a woman who stands by rivers and arroyos at night and weeps for her lost children. But if any human children come near her, she'll abduct them and presumably kill them. Scaring the little tykes with stories of her is often a means of keeping order--much as "Skookum will get you if you don't behave" is; I suppose a marginally milder version of this might be "Santa won't come this year if you've been bad," or "No dessert for you, buster, until you take that knife out of your sister's chest." BTW, do you know "Little Willie"s? "Little Willie/With a taste for gore,/Nailed the baby to the door./Mother said with humor quaint,/"Please, dear Will, don't mar the paint." There's also one that begins "Little Willie/With a shout/Gouged the baby's eyeballs out," but I can't remember the rest.) Hope you're well.
Chessgames.com 1950s retro exchange:
How's the chess, <Jess>?
Quite a thrill, <Bill>. Actually, I've been playing a fair amount of blitz on Gameknot. This semester's a dog, and I'm deep into various personal projects (reading/writing), so I've not been able to check in here as much. I see the same's true with you (and, I gather, <Eyal>). Have you read Ken Kesey's Sometimes a Great Notion? (just finished it) Really terrific--I think better than Cuckoo's Nest. Hey, <Niels>. Hope you're well, and I hope you get your house back soon. |
|
| Oct-31-07 | | achieve: Hi <Bill>! Scary Willie stuff you wrote there; "We" don't tell those in Holland, I believe... But I may be terribly out of touch, anyway. <Jess> You'll be pleased to know that I am starting to play really well in shorter time controls against Chessmaster! Just like with you- I was pretty psyched at the prospect of playing the machine and knowing I would lose in say 10 min games... BUT things change dramatically now!
I used to get stuck at 1400-1500 level, almost always losing to <T.C.> (1700) - but now I have shot up to 2000! this morning, after which I played on while actually very tired- and lost a few again so i dropped a bit.. But I am off the psycho barrier I had with Blitz and everything under 30min time!! I'll be slugging it out now against <Josh> (2100) and I am gonna get that son of a @#$% as well... I just know it. The thing is, <Jess>, that I think you'll get around to handling playing an engine at 1700+ level, too... as I found that the main thing is to rely on the technique you've developed and are busy developing... My confidence in my play following my games at GK made me say: "The hell I am gonna get psyched out against ANYONE ever again!!" - and similar thoughts along those lines. After a few consecutive wins, the nerves completely went away and win after win kept coming, except for a few losses on time and the occasional "well played" by the comp and I blundered a piece... over 400 points in one day!
Proof that indeed, as you said a while back, 90% in chess is psychology -- I figure now that my chessmaster as an opponent is just a consistant player... Nothing more and nothing less. It's just a cold calculating punching bag- that can be used to improve one's technique- and try out openings etc etc. Isn't that something?
Of course the <real sport that is called Chess> can only be against a human opponent with longer time controls - as you said some days ago at Dom's... |

| Nov-01-07 | | BishopofBlunder: Hi <Jess o' the Far East>, A belated Happy Halloween to you in Korea.
Question: Do they have Halloween in Korea?
Answer: Yes, God willing (Ha! A little joke there)
Hags and Witches,
<BishopofBlood>
P.S. How come they call it the "Far East" when you fly west to get there? <BoB> |

Great fun and informative. Interesting stuff there. Cheers! |

 | | Richard Taylor: I wish fewer chess players studied computing.* I know there is big money in it but it is boring - I mean boring that so many good chess players concentrate on that area. I suppose it is natural as good chess players seem to be good at logic and maths, and have good working memories, (& indeed they have relatively high IQs);I found that I simply couldn't do computer programming (and only relatively routine maths) etc and so I will probably never get to Krusher's 2100+level...no matter!)) (Kingcrusher may not be one of those boring computer persons (he is interesting on the little videos he does) but many are (boring I mean)) - but there is a big life outside of computers! The Chess Club he is (in London I think it is) in has good site. Their instructional videos are great fun and possibly informative... *I DONT mean that that subject itsself is boring! |

 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> Saturday greetings, your maj. Got your emolument, ta very much, and the check is in the post. Hmm. That last phrase is starting to sound like "the mammoth is in the cave" or "the mizzen mast is in the great southern ocean". As in, defunct. So mote it bee. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hi all!
Despite my "stunning" victory last Saturday over a 2000 rated Yahoo opponent, subsequent games have forced me to UPDATE my YAHOO RATINGS in my profile. Sigh.
It ain't easy when ya fall. |

| Nov-04-07 | | achieve: Hi <Jess>!! Back in town? Yes!! Just read your EMU - there are a few things that need to be straightened out, young lady... Heh Just a FEW, of course, thanks for being so candid and honest... Losing a few games of chess cannot be shameful - better take a 2 week break and do some excercises and study... The game I posted above might be a good start. Then take it from there... (I'll put it in the EMU) And/Or watch a really gooood movie, have a long walk with a good friend etc. - after all the teaching and organizing you have done this week! I think I'll turn back in to sleep on- and send you a fine emu back, Jess. (in a cupla hours...) |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Heh HI <nIELS!>
Hi <Lars>!!
Well I took part of your advice already JINX!!
I went for a very long walk and talked to a nice Korean doctor friend. Then I came back and played chess and WON!!
Heh. Losing streak over.
I've still been studying Kingscrusher videos every night after work. Chess study is always a pleasure, never a chore. the only thing I don't like about chess is losing. I like all the rest of it. Look forward to your EMU!!

| Nov-04-07 | | NakoSonorense: Hi!, how the hell are you today/tonight? how's the teaching going? Do you know any Korean yet? I know how to say "hello" It's pronounced something like "anyong" Anyway, I guess that's enough for surviving over there... Have fun! |
|
Nov-04-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hi <Nako>!! good to hear from you. Yes I'm fine thanks and you?
It's all terribly exciting over here.
"anyang haseo" means hello all right.
"Kemop da"!!
That means "thank you" but you can only use it with friends. luckily, you are a friend!!

| Nov-04-07 | | achieve: You have recovered fast, milady...

 | | jessicafischerqueen: HI <Niels>!
I've joined <Letsplaychess.com> on Kingscrusher's advice, and so far I've "analyzed" two YouTube videos on the site. It is a very friendly place, quite similar to CG.com. Also, there are several people who are members of both websites. CHESS AHOY! |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: OK here;s ONE reason why it's a really, really, stupid idea to try to save money in a foreign country by NOT GETTTING A PHONE. (they are very expensive here). I just "locked myself" inside my apartment by accident. having no phone, I had to yell out my 4th floor window like a madwoman until a crowd of Korean people gathered below. Finally, one of them came who can speak English.
they came up and rescued me.
I gave them all a banana.
I am beet red!!
How embarrassing.
OK guess who's going out to buy a cellphone tomorrow??? Good grief |

| Nov-04-07 | | Elixir of Life: Hey <Jess> do you have time for a correspondence game or OTB match? Anyways, I am playing the Fischer Defence against the King's gambit in a correspondence game. Are there any articles on the key lines and motifs of this opening? Thanks :) |
|
Nov-04-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: hey <Elixir>!!
Actually I'm already playing two correspondence games at the moment. I have almost no time, and these games are 10 days a move. Yes, there is an article by Fischer about the <King's Gambit> being "busted" which is a must read in your situation. I know it is online cuz I read it over a year ago.
howver, I"m not sure where the link is anymore.
You could fool around with Searches on the Net-- I don't even remember the exact title of the article. However, I bet <User: domdaniel> knows. He knows everything.
I bet if you dropped an inquiry in his forum he would likely be able to help better than me. Regards,
Jess |
|
| Nov-04-07 | | achieve: <Jess> I just sent you a first emu-- there is a bit more to come. Please give some feedback on "resonance time" I mention in there-- if you have the time. Gotta run now...
Back later. |

| Nov-04-07 | | achieve: <...By letting himself feel ALL THE HORROR right away-- no pretending to be neutral or "accepting the loss"...> I just read it. No pretending. heh. Spot on, as usual... More to come from this side of the big pond, after I have mopped my floor... (Lars went in drag -- ddon't blame me now- it was his choice...) |
