Yahoo
1.5 hours for each player time control.

1. e4 b6
2. d4 Bb7
3. Bd3 g6 (Oh no! not the bloody Hyper Double fianchetto I hate this)

4. Be3 Bg7 (Already my primitive plan is to swap DSBs)

5. Qd2 Nf6
6. f3 O-O
7. Bh6 Nc6 (The most primitive of all plans in action)

8. Bxg7 Kxg7
9. Ne2 e6 (he’s preparing d5, but it never comes, oddly enough)

10. Nc3 Na5? (what is he up to?)

11. O-O-O Nc6 (and now the real plan- I’m angling for h4 already)

12. h4 Nb4
13. Bc4 a6 (just moves my LSB to a better square? I think he lost time here)

14. a3 b5
15. Bb3 Nc6 (consolidating defence before I attack his kinside)

16. g4 b4

Which brings us here:

click for larger view

Heh- Now my <Shreddies 3> says “take the pawn”! Which is what I did. !.37 Advantage White it says now.

17. axb4 Nxb4
18. h5! a5 (and again <Shreddies> agrees with my plan)

19. hxg6 fxg6
20. Qh6+ Kf7? (<Shreddies> says Kf8 is much safer)

21. g5 Nh5
22. Qxh7+ Ng7 (only move)

And now I know I’m CREAMING him—even if I didn’t have so much initiative, I knew my Queenside was safe= he had no serious threat there. But I must find the correct moves still. Very excited at this point.

  jessicafischerqueen: And the finish:

23. Qh4 Qe7
24. f4 Nh5
25. Ng3 Rh8
26. Qg4 Rh7
27, Nxh5 Rxh5 (and he’s in REAL BAD TROUBLE NOW)

28. Rxh5 gxh5
29. Qxh5+ Kf8 (and Black has no defence now)

30.Qh8+ Kf7 (white wins by force here)

31. g6+ and Black has to Resign. Which he did.

AROOOO

jessicafischerqueen: Heh Thanks <Tim> actually I HATE playing agaisnt these hypermodern <fianchettoers>.

I never know quite where to put my pieces after I grab the center.

Nov-24-07  Eyal: <Jess> Nice game! Going over it in retrospect it seems to have been rather comfortable for you - your opponent played very passively and missed pretty much every opportunity he had to generate counterplay (e.g. with d5 at a certain point, as you mentioned), so you could crush him in a very straightforward manner. I think that somewhere around moves 10-15, with all those pointless and time-consuming knight maneuvers, Black already gets himself into a strategically lost position.

As for suggestions/improvements - none of your moves were weak (according to Fritz you never went below +2 advantage after the opening). There may have been some points where you could have smashed him even quicker, for example with an immediate 16.h5 (16...Nxh5 17.g4 - and if 17...Nf6 then 18.Qh6+ followed by e5 and Black is finished; note that in this move order the h5 square is denied to the black knight); or 23.d5! (no need to be afraid of Rh8 - assuming that was the reason for Qh4 - 23...Rh8 24.dxe6+ dxe6 25.Bxe6+! Kxe6 26.Qxg6+ and Black is soon mated).

jessicafischerqueen: Heh thanks for the analysis CAPIN@@

I'm very proud of myself to actuallly win a game where my engine doesnt tell me I'm a crap player.

I just played over your improved lines on the board.

DOH!

That souds all very good, <Jess>!! Also the not thinking about the Najdorf loss-part...

I just finished watching <The Stone Merchant> and it was a disaster, really... Very good material actually to make a real good movie about- but the sound dubbing was horrible and in fact the... @#$%@##$@#@$ BASTA

Doubtful choice here by Harvey Keitel to do the lead role in this.

I will analyse your game a bit later today, as I have to run some errands(?) now- and get some stuff for the weekend...

Going by the FENs I think you may have missed a cupla chances and maybe even relinquished quite a bit of your advantage on one or two occasions... Haven't put the engine on yet, though - I may well be mistakin...

Back later...

Domdaniel: <Jess> Nice game. Black didn't play *that* badly, he just took too many liberties in the opening, and you punished him quite efficiently. I've attempted this sort of stuff as Black myself, and I know how tricky it is: you can't get away with fianchettoing both bishops and then moving your knights around. You need pawn breaks, and black figures this out way too late.

You did miss one killer move, though -- and I think I see the reason. Instead of 23.Qh4, 23.d5! would have finished him off at once. For example, 23.d5 exd5 24.Nxd5 Nxd5 25.Rxd5! [the white bishop is the key piece here, worth giving up the rook to activate it] 25...Bxd5 26.Bxd5+ Ke7 27.Qxg7+ Kd6 and White wins easily.

Neither the 'threat' of black's ...Rh8 nor the loose pawn on g5 need to be worried about, eg

23.d5 Qxg5+ 24.f4 Qe7 25.Rdg1 and g6 can't be defended. Or 24.f4 Qf6 25.dxe6+ dxe6 26.Rd7+ winning.

23...Rh8 is even worse:
23.d5 Rh8 24.dxe6+ dxe6 25.Bxe6+ Kxe6 26.Qxg6+ Ke5 27.f4# (or 26...Ke7 27.Qf6+ Ke8 28.Rxh8#).

In fact, you could also have played d5 on an earlier move. It's very strong, for example, on move 21, instead of your 21.g5:

21.d5 exd5 22.e5 Ne8 23.Nxd5 Nxd5 24.Rxd5 Bxd5? 25.Bxd5+ forces mate, eg 25...Ke7 26.Qxh7+ Ng7 27.Qxg7+ Ke8 28.Qxg6+ Ke7 29.Rh7+ Rf7 30.Qxf7#

The advantage of d5 (over g5) is that black's knight can't escape to h5 with a pawn still on g4; and of course it opens up the centre and unleashes your LSB for a mating attack on the king.

Early on, you said that Black was planning ...d5 but never got to play it. I don't think he was: I certainly would not have considered it as black. It's positionally horrible if white replies e5, when the pawn chain stifles both black bishops (or the one that remains).

Is it possible, though, that having imagined d5 as a 'black move' to be restrained or prevented, you didn't fully consider the idea of playing d5 yourself?

You're winning anyway, of course, so you can't be said to have really made a mistake. But after 23.Qh4?! Black has some half chances of counterplay -- 25.Ng3 a4 26.Nxh5 Rh8, for example. Or he could have played 25...Nxg3 26.Qxg3 Ke8 and tried to build a fortress. You should win anyway, but black is still in the game in these lines.

In contrast, after 23.d5 he's dead.

I see others have pointed this out before me ... oh well, that'll learn me to read *all* the posts...

Nov-24-07  WBP: <Jess> Great game! Very nice attack and good punishment for passive play! The latter, it seemns is especially important. She who has initiative often wins. Others have posted some good points, so I'll simply say congratulations again. Can't wait to see you break 2000!
Nov-24-07  Red October: congrats... very nice game
Nov-24-07  Boomie: <Domdaniel: 23. d5> Can't black play Rh8 there and force the trade of the heavy artillery? Just spitballing without an engine.
Nov-24-07  Boomie: <jessicafischerqueen: I never know quite where to put my pieces after I grab the center.>

The double fantail is a hyperventillated Nimzo bother. Black invites white to over-extend the pawns and then springs something like c5. The pieces generally support your pawn center. So a lot depends on how you play the pawns. You might try e4-d4-c4 but black is expecting something like that. You chose a Saemisch type with e4-d4-f3 which seems solid and must have frustrated your honorable opponent. Your bishops on e3 and d3 are interesting. Morphy always played his bishops this way against the French. I'd say you played the opening well and even that you are gaining a good understanding of the game.

  Domdaniel: <Boomie> -- <if 23.d5 Rh8> -- No, he can't: 24.dxe6+ dxe6 25.Bxe6+ and black gets mated, as Eyal also pointed out.
Nov-24-07  twinlark: Well done, Jess. You're steadily improving.

Note to self. First pillage...then burn. I missed <Eyal's> note not to mention the obvious dxe6+...sigh.

  jessicafischerqueen: <Dom>:

I've played out your lines over the board and wanted to thank you for your thorough analysis.

I missed the killer move-- I considered the d5 a long time but didn't see the winning continuation.

But now I do!!

Heh.

<Tim>: Thanks for your warm encouragement and ideas. yes, I like to stick my bishops in the middle for some reason.

I think it pisses people off sometimes.

However, mentioning me in the same breath as <Morphy> is hyberbolic!!

My highest chess aspiration is to become a decent club player (if I ever live in a country again with a chess club) and to play in a real tournament and get a real rating.

AROOO

Nov-25-07  achieve: <Jess> Good stuff!

Meanwhile I've put me and my engine on <The Game> and I do have a few mildly critical remarks at a few of your moves...

<Dom> mentioned an earlier d5 and I have a few other suggestions.

It's 6:30 AM here now so I may get a few hours sleep first and then report back. OK?

Right!
Watch it!!

Nov-25-07  achieve: Hi <Jess> I too don't very much like to play against Fianchetoed Bishops, for some reason...

<4. Be3> Although I wouldn't play the Bishop here, (I think I might prefer Nf3 or f4/Nf3 - like they say in the old books I have to develop the Knights first...), but that's why I like your move-- you already have the plan to swap DSBs, and carry that out as planned...) Bg7

5. Qd2 Nf6
6. f3 O-O
7. Bh6 Nc6 <(The most primitive of all plans in action)> Better than having no plan - denying Black control over the dark squares and the center (e5) suits you better, I think...

<9. Ne2 e6 (he’s preparing d5, but it never comes, oddly enough)> 9...e5 might have been better...

<10. Nc3 Na5? (what is he up to?)> Indeed...

<11. O-O-O Nc6 (and now the real plan- I’m angling for h4 already)> Good plan! Castling long gives you better attacking chances.

<12. h4 Nb4> Here I would very much consider attacking the knight with e5 -- Since Black still has his King on g7, the knight can't go to h5- and after eg 12..Nd5 13 Nxd5 exd5 and then h4, you would be cruising with a great position -- e5 also eliminates Black playing e5.

<13. Bc4 a6 (just moves my LSB to a better square? I think he lost time here)> He did- and in this position Black CAN play 13...d5! and it almost equalises, since you can not anwer with the (otherwise) perfect e5 -- your Bishop is attacked and if you take with exd5, Nbxd5 looks to give Black a relatively good position, with you still having an edge...

On the other hand - if you play Bb3, Black himself will take your e4 pawn, and after fxe4 Qe7 e5 Ng4 looks OK for Black...

Dang I'll have to cut this post short - phonecall and I'm visiting my mom after that.

I'll finish my analysis later and hope these few comments are of some use for you.

Ahoy!
