Alekhine vs Spielmann, 1927
Hey!! Keep up with me please!! (kiddin)
This is a <Alekhine endgame> analysed by <canstein> - posted at my forum - together with the actual gamescore and commentary here on CGs make for exquisite study material... It seems that you are right-- A Friday Night spent with some quality chess analysis through YouTube videos is almost irreplacable... This one proves it yet again- and the time it takes to go through all the lines and see for yourself- in itself- ensures you of at least a packed evening of entertainment in any shape or form. The subtleties and yet the devastating powers are phenomenal. |

| Dec-21-07 | | Ragh: Thats ok <JFQennedy>, I was only kidding about enforcing the taser (ignore function). Nobody gets onto my ignore list EVER!! just becoz I want to read every single post made here on CG :o) |

5.Rc3 a5
6.Ne5 Nf6
7.Rd1 Ke7
8.Nd3 b6

| Dec-22-07 | | achieve: <Jess>
Just went over it for a first time- and this move Nb2 by shreddy puzzles me as the Knight is trapped there and loses instantly... 22.Kf2 Nxd1+
23.Ke1 Nb2?? Was that played after a minute's thought? click for larger viewHere 23...Nc3 keeps the Knight for Black and from there a win is a lot of hard work, but it looks more drawish... -- so 23...Nb2 is just giving the piece away... hmmm, very unlike an engine to do just that... You musta been pleasantly surprised...
Ok I will come back with a thorough reply a bit later-- in fact I just woke up before you posted so my judgement can be a bit shaky... maybe I replayed it in the wrong order... hence the FEN with the position after 23. Ke1 Wonder what you think...

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Dr. Euwe>:
maybe 1 minute at 9 ply on <Shredder Classic 3> is not strong enough for testing purposes? Next exercise we can just increase the power of the engine, no? Regards,
Jessica Wannabe Morphette |
|
| Dec-22-07 | | achieve: <Jess> Well yes, that seems to be required... Have you asked it to play it again after Ke1? Point is we'd like to get <this> excercise- along with the playing strength of <shredder Classic 3>-- sorted out properly before moving on... I'm goin out with my lovely secretary Lars now, so back a bit later... |
|
Dec-22-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: oK <Doctor> I'm going to bump up the computig power and then go in after Ke1 for a test drive. Awhgooooo |
|
Dec-22-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Ack! OK <Doctor> I bumped <Shreddy> up to 15 ply One minute a move and I played from <Ke1>. I only got a draw!!!
Ok here's how it went.
1.Ke1 Nc3
2.Rd4 Ke5
3.Rxd3 Nd5
4.Kf2 g5
5.Ra3 f5
6.Kg3 Kd4
7.h4 f4+
8.Kg4 Ne3+
9.Kh5 gxh4
10.Kxh4 Nc2
11.Ra6 Ke3
12.Kg4 h5+
13.Kxh5 Kxf3
14.Rf6 Ne3
15.Rxf4+ DRAW.
OK do I keep playing the position from Ke1 until I can find the way to win? It appears that 15 ply at one minute is more than a match for the likes of me, regards,
Wannabee Morphette.
(say hello to your fuzzy secretary!) |
|
| Dec-22-07 | | achieve: <Morphette> Hang on! While outside I was thinking that there must be something odd going on... My engine zooms to 16 ply within 10 secs on the 23 Ke1 position -- so I was thinking that maybe you installed the settings for Shred Cl 3 with too little MB for calculating power... Meaning that I recently did the same with mine in that I had to "give it" something like 100 MB to let my recently installed <Rybka> run properly--- I even had 60 GIGABYTE installed on my comp for extra fun... but that might be beside the point as I'm sure your Laptop has enough space... So it's just giving enough space for the processor to calculate fast... But I am a geek with these matters-- I barely know what is necessary, to be honest... So please have another go when you can get a good 16-19 ply out of your engine within 90 secs -- is my advice for now... Back later... |

Dec-22-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <DR. EUWE>!! I did it on my second try!!!! Heh. I figured you'd order me to keep trying so I went ahead. OK try number two to 'CONVERT THE TOUCHDOWN."
From Ke1...
Me v. <Shredder Classic 3> set at 15 ply at one minute a move each. 1.Ke1 Nc3
2.Rd4 Ke5
3.Rxd3 Nd5
4.Rd2 g5
5.Kf2 f5
6.Kg3 Ne3
7.Re2 f4+
8.Kf2 h5
9.h3 Kd4
10.Rd2+ Kc3
11.Rd7 g4
12.Rf7 g3+
13.Kg1 Kd3
14.Rxf4 Ke2
15.Rh4 Kxf3
16.Rxh5 Kf4

21.Rxg2 Ke5
22.Kh2 Nh6
23.Kh3 Ke4
24.Rg6 Nf7
25.Rf6 Nd8
26.Kg4 RESIGN.
Heh.
What next <Doctor>? Do we keep playing the same position and bumping up the computer power? Or do we go to another lesson? |
|
Dec-22-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Sigh. And I was so proud of myself for getting the win on the second try with boosted settings. <niels> there's nothing wrong with my installation or <Shredder power>. I can keep boosting the ply up-
but I spent the whole day on this so far and I'm kind of overcoming my fear of computers here. Plus when I made the win on the second try I felt as good as when I win on yahoo. However, I'm ready to go against the best moves.
Again- there's nothing wrong with my <Shredder computing power>. I can set it for MONSTER play no problem.
Sigh.
OK do I try a third time from <Ke1> with Shreddy on MAXIMUM POWER setting? ACK
whahahah heee
Help! I'm going crazy here. Please have a look at the line first where I converted the touchdown? that's 15 ply one minute each to move.
<Morphetta> |
|
Dec-22-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: I will wait until you check my second <winning> line there for further instructions.... Again, I have no problem with the computing space.
But you said one minute per move!!!
Heh.
I'm more than willing to keep re-doing this assignment with different times/settings, however. But first, have a look at the second line?
Your obedient student. |
|
| Dec-22-07 | | achieve: <Morphette> Well, I have to analyse this 2nd touch down first coz in your previous attempt you could have played a lot better... Will get to that later as I am very curious how you did win it just now... You go to the 2Bs mate and how you'd approach it... Ok? AAWHAXY
|
|
Dec-22-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hi <doctor> no I haven't gotten to the 2 bishops mate yet. I took some time working up the courage for a second try against the position on a 15 ply one minute a move setting, so I was waiting for your analysis on the second line there. NOw I will attempt the 2 Bs mate as ordered.
Yours,
Student morphette |
|
| Dec-22-07 | | achieve: <But you said one minute per move!!!> Yes, because my engine gets to 17 ply within a minute (after Ke1) -- 17 ply is more then enough for strong opposition... Ok back later...
|
|
| Dec-22-07 | | achieve: 10.Rd2+ Kc3
click for larger viewKc3? looks to be/is a mistake because the King cuts itself off from the pawns and the business end of the table... Ke5 looks to be the only option and probably enough for the draw-- but will have a closer look... The trick now first is to see why <shreddy> played Kc3 and at which depth and with what eval... Just to figure out the relative strength of your engine... So if you have the time "bump her up again and take her for a spin" after 10. Rd2+ Euwe of the wants to get to the bottom of this... |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Doctor Euwe>:
OK, just completed the K 2 B's mate.
I played from the given position against <Shredder> set at 18 ply no time limit on it's calculation. It took me 24 moves to mate!!!
I don't think that's very good. Sigh.
well here it is anyways.

Dec-22-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Ok <Doctor> I'm going to put my Shreddy on no time limit at 18 ply and see what happens from the given position.... Going in now!! |
|
Dec-22-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Right! Mystery solved. I bumped the power level and my <Shreddy> has no problem going to 18 ply in a minute, at least in an endgame with so few pieces on the board. I tried several different strategies...
As usual, you were right. <Powered Shreddy> played Ke5--- The position is DEAD DRAWN so I've obviously made an error earlier. Sigh.
OK Now I'm going to re-do the whole puzzle from the start position again with Shreddy set at 18 ply one minute. |
