Sometimes a link, for some reason, brings You to a wrong spot. But with each of the above, at the bottom of the page there is an index/"menu", so You can work from there. For Your convenience I've posted them all here separately. |

| Jan-13-08 | | brankat: Also, check out this one. This is where I actually started. In the third or fourth post from the bottom there is a link to an article on Mrs.Sonja Graf. Sonja Graf-Stevenson |

click for larger viewNakamura (Black) has just captured the White f1-bishop with 40 ... ♗d3x♗f1. Why did White now give up a piece by playing 41 ♔g1-f2 instead of making the "obvious" recapture 41 ♘e3x♗f1 ? ANSWER is below if you want to cheat. :-)

| Jan-13-08 | | Boomie: Our very own Nigel Short played the Evans Gambit! When you start your Morphy study, you'll be seeing a lot of these. He called the Evans the most beautiful of openings until Anderssen showed him how black can hold on to the pawn. Here LameMe plays the tepid 5...Be7 avoiding the fireworks. Short vs E L'Ami, 2008 |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Morphette Minature> against a guy who should know better, in which I miss a WIN ON THE SPOT three moves in succession… Morphette 1834 v. Arachonoacid 1682
Yahoo 2 hours each time control
1.e4 e5
2.Nf3 Nc6
3.d4 f6?
<not in the OE- so as Boomie told me, it’s my job to prove him wrong! F6 takes away a valuable square for the black Knight and exposes the King to checks on the e8-h4 diagonal> 4.Bc4 d6
5.Nc3 Bf4
<I think 5.d5 is strong – on move 4 or 5—I almost played it but I wanted to try something else—my idea is to get a lead in “classical development”—you know, bringing out Knights and Bishops and such> 6.Be3 exd4
7.Bxd4 Nxd4
<Heh my plan is working—I don’t care if he doubles my pawns because I’ve been planning to castle Queenside since I played 1.e4…(I LOVE castling Queenside in the Scotch)… Sure he has tension on my DSB but so what? If he takes it then Qxd4 and if he doubles my pawns I have a HUGE lead in development> 8.Qxd4 Bxf3?
9.gxf3 Qd2
AROOOO
<Look at my lead in development MOM!—I don’t need a stinking engine to tell that Black has badly misplayed the Scotch here. Game is mine to lose. It’s remarkable how many 16-1800 range Yahoo players are unfamiliar with the Scotch. It’s not “in fashion” at these levels on Yahoo> click for larger view<here however I totally miss a tactical shot that wins a pawn and pretty much savages Black’s position-- 10.Bxg8! Rxg8 and now 11. Qd5 with a vicious fork.. I’m ashamed to say that I didn’t even consider this combination. Sigh.> 10.o-o-o b6?
11.Rhd1? g6?
<Ack this is so embarrassing. THREE TURNS IN A ROW I HAD AN INSTANT WIN WITH Bxg8 followed by Qd5!!! So I have to make myself do it the hard way.> 12.e5! fxe5?
<heh well OK then I still win on the spot here…> click for larger view13.Rxe5+! <Black is now lost> <He played Be7 which falls to Rxe7+, but there’s no way out. If he plays Kd8, I have Bxg8 and then Qd5 with the vicious fork AND YES THANK YOU VERY MUCH THIS TIME I DID SEE IT. Good grief…> He played a few moves with a piece down but soon resigned. |

| Jan-15-08 | | Boomie: <JessieMorph> Heh. Good example of how high falutin' ideas like rapid development can blind us to tactics. Tal said he first looks at all the sacs/takes before anything. I can quote Tal because my initials are TAL. The similarity ends right there but still I know my rights...woof. Especially when your esteemed opponent plays a surprise like f6, take a lot of time on the next few moves. Bc4 was perfect with the idea of exploiting the white squares. d5 was not so good. With a lead in development you want to open lines, not lock the pawns. Keeping the tension of dxe5 puts pressure on black. Aside from the missed tactic of Bxg8, you played in true Morphette style. If you keep developing your pieces so naturally, I'm going to start calling you Paulette. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Thanks <Tim of my Liiiiiife> See I looked HARD at d5 and almost played it but something constitutional in me wanted to keep central tension!! I finally did something right... even if by "accident".. I will strive to adopt the <Tal> "checklist" practice, especially given that I play open "piece games"... Heh-- no "d5" for me...
In post-game analysis my <shreddy> kept telling me to play d5 there for two moves but I'm very glad i didn't. To one's own self be true---
An oft-quoted line, which is kind of ironic because in context the actual meaning is: <If you are a total moron (Polonius, who actually says the line)-- then it would be MORONIC to be "to thine ownself true"...> which is the whole point of having a MORON give this line in the first place. One is also reminded of how often (and STUPIDLY) Shaggy's famous <What a work is a man... how noble in etc.> speech is employed against it's "meaning in context." Which is, of course, that "man" is NONE OF THESE THINGS in the final anaylsis... at least in <Hamlet's> opinion when he says the soliloquy-- At best, he arguably evinces a LONGING for man's POTENTIAL to be these things... but that's about it. Oh irony....

| Jan-15-08 | | Boomie: <JessiePauletteMorpheus> Thanks for your thanks. Encouragement is just a part of my nature. I can't help myself. It's not personal, Sonny. It's only business. Your understanding of Shaggy Spear goes way beyond mine. That his audiences understood is more evidence of human devolution. Like we need to be reminded that the Spartans were the bomb...heh. I've laid an egg in your nest, somewhere between a Moa and an Ostrich by my standards. |

| Jan-15-08 | | achieve: <Jess>
Oh yes... When a opponent doesn't know the SCOTCH, and plays f6... Be sure to be all over him like a ff-ing army, indeed no matter what rating he has... His rating is of ZERO importance...
Only if you know his repertoire ( in full ) - there may be a chance for you to start being aware of his/her achievements in certain openings/positions-- and taking them into account... As you said-- in EVERY other case just (try and) play the board. Congratz with a very good win Btw |
