Domdaniel: This <... Jingle Jangle Morning Burstein Von Knacker Thrasher ...> person does, admittedly, have a cool name.

But there's more to it than names. Has he got the ineffable charisma of coolth?

Jan-27-08  Open Defence: <William S Burroughs (Naked Lunch, etc)> then you can't forget Messrs Becker and Fagen .... how about a kiss for yer cousin Dupree ? and the sparkle of their China... the shine of their Japan ? who had the guts to call themselves Steely Dan ?
Jan-27-08  Eyal: <Johann Gambolputty de von Ausfern -schplenden -schlitter -crasscrenbon -fried -digger -dangle -dungle -burstein -von -knacker -thrasher -apple -banger -horowitz -ticolensic -grander -knotty -spelltinkle -grandlich -grumblemeyer -spelterwasser -kürstlich -himbleeisen -bahnwagen -gutenabend -bitte -eine -nürnburger -bratwustle -gerspurten -mit -zweimache -luber -hundsfut -gumberaber -shönendanker -kalbsfleisch -mittler -raucher von Hautkopft of Ulm>

Domdaniel: What about Bjorn Vaderletsutsikter, and his 93-minute kazoo version of A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall? The Swedish Dylan, they said.

OK, that's enough proxy votes for Zimmerman. Bob'll stroll it at this rate.

jessicafischerqueen: Well this is rather confusing, especially since the contest was supposed to be a choice betwwen <Elvis> and <James Brown>.

Well if i wanted "Yesmen and women" I suppose I'd discuss my chess at <Pogo.com> or the <North Korea Official Chess Talk for the Masses or We Shoot You Society for Workers>.

Anyhoo, I've got to go get my legs waxed before class (embarrassingly, not a joke) and then we have a last class of the segment "Pizza Party" where they all swore they would speak English if I bought them Pizza but none of them actually will.

OK so the VOTING is officially still open till I get back and tabulate the results.

Thanks for voting!! Notice I havent' boted yet.

I'm still deciding...

OH- In case of a TIE the winner will be decided according to the <Sun, Bun, and Burger> forumula, the same one they use in chess.

See <User: Eyal> for details on this famous, and fun, fourmula.

Jan-28-08  Open Defence: Steely Dan, Steely Dan, Steely Dan, Steely Dan

do they have enough votes yet ?

jessicafischerqueen: <Deffi> no idea until I apply the <Sun, Bun, and Burger> chess algorithm to apply the <Ar-mouse-pad> number to each votee.

It didn't help that I just spilled coffee all over my mouse and killed it.

I've just returned from "Woori-Mart" with a brand new Mouse (only 14 bucks) and I'm taking him for a spin as we speak.

It may take a while to tabulate.

However, VOTING IS OFFICIALLY HALTED RIGHT HERE.

I will reveal the winner after I find out how to use the chess ratings forumula for tie breaks that <Eyal> gave me.

Jan-28-08  Larsker: <COOLEST MAN OF THE 20th CENTURY> Lyndon B Johnson - and I actually mean it.

<Open Defence: Steely Dan, Steely Dan, Steely Dan, Steely Dan> You seem to be quite obsessed. Is that the music group - or the other thing :-)

Having said that - yes - Fagan and Becker were quite a bunch. The melodies are sweet, the texts are quirky and intelligent, and the musicianship is some of the best in rock. And then it all comes together.

Jan-28-08

jessicafischerqueen: <Larsker> well OK then I guess voting is still open since I'm having a lot of trouble understanding this dang <rating algorithm>

Back in a bit...

Premium Chessgames Member
Domdaniel: Hel-lo! Did I hear somebody use the words 'algorithm', 'trouble', and 'understanding' in the same sentence? Luckily, I'm an amateur maths geek and I'd like to pollinate ... uh, sorry, wrong script ... I'd like to *help* you.

Bees make Honey.

Jan-28-08  Open Defence: <Is that the music group - or the other thing :-) > strictly music.. this is a family site ;-p

jessicafischerqueen: Interestingly, when me and <User:Domdaniel> were running a now <infamous> experiment in his forum (which actually got it shut down), we discovered in the course of our <vital work> that the

<OTHER THING> has a "name that is not allowed to be typed."

Yep. It's on an automatic "filter thingy" that zaps it.

Needless to say, this <OTHER THING> is also the name of a quaint <Newfoundland village> in Canada.

jessicafischerqueen: Ok I'm having a deuce of a time sorting out how to "weight" the votes.

So, following the <Sonny Barger> tie-breaker formula, The LIST will go in descending (ascending)? order from LEAST COOLEST TO MOST COOLEST, the latter of which will be declared official winner.

Bear in mind that, as per the orginail contest rules, nominees who <enjoyed firearms and "keeping they hoes in line"> will be weighted more heavily.

Ok now to start the list. From Least to Best:

Jan-28-08

jessicafischerqueen: OH in case you're interested this is the forumula I'm using to weight the votes and tabulate a winner:

<Sonneborn-Berger is a method to determine a tournament result if two players have an equal number of wins. It takes the opponents' wins into account.

Example: Each player has played two games against each other player. 1 indicates a win, 0 a loss.

-------- -------- ----------------- ------------ | 1st | 2nd | won games | Sonneborn- | | round | round | | Berger | |--------- --------| | | | A B C D | A B C D | wins | opponent | wins | -- -------- -------- ------ --------- -------------| | A | - 1 1 1 | - 0 1 0 | 4 | B C C D | 4+3+3+1 = 11 | | B | 0 - 1 1 | 1 - 0 1 | 4 | A C D D | 4+3+1+1 = 9 | | C | 0 0 - 1 | 0 1 - 1 | 3 | B D D | 4+1+1 = 6 | | D | 0 0 0 - | 1 0 0 - | 1 | A | 4 = 4 | -- -------- -------- ------ --------- ------------

Player A and B both have 4 wins, thus the Sonneborn-Berger method is used to determine the tournament winner: For each won game the opponent's final primary score is added to the winner's Sonneborn-Berger score. For example, A <<won>>> against B, C, C and D, his Sonneborn-Berger score is 4+3+3+1 = 11. B has a Sonneborn-Berger score of 9, thus A is the tournament winner.>
