Position after 25 ... ♕e5x♖g5! 0-1

click for larger view

25 ♖g1-g5?? is an unbelievable blunder for a 2600-rated player to make.

This kind of mistake, overlooking a simple <PIN>, is the kind of mistake that 1100-rated players commit.

Apr-04-08  achieve: Hi <Jess> check out this post by <chesscard> aka Dr. TooGood... He's got it all figured out and lined up, and he IS a rated CC player btw... -- Chessgames Challenge: The World vs G Timmerman, 2007

<THE BLUNDER> There are moves that are simply horrible at ANY level-- and they're called blunders -- you can expect more, quantitatively, from a 1100 rated player than a 2600, but it remains the same unfortunate <"wanna-bang-your-head-against-a-concrete-wall"> type of blunder, given it is classical timecontrol/no timescramble...

These PINS are nasty, I tells you! ;-)

jessicafischerqueen: <notyetagm> Thanks for showing me that GM blunder!

Kind of eases the sting for us patzers when we make blunders as well.

they eye plays tricks!!

The main instructive lesson I take from all of your work is this:

First and foremost, before making ANY moves-- check and double check the tactical <DANGERS> and <POSSIBILITIES> before attempting to execute your positional plan in a game.

  jessicafischerqueen: Hi <Doctor Euwe>!!

I see you are in fine form with your newly working computer.

You are waging a <two front> war against chess computers!!

1. Demonstrating their inability to see far enough ahead in key positions

2. Beating the crap out of them OTB!!!

Needless to say, I'm on YOUR SIDE in this desperate war--

MAN (woman in my case) v. MACHINE

OK here's a terrifying thought just to illustrate the urgency of this struggle.

In the Near Future, why not make <centaur chess> more logical by planting Chess Engine chips inside the heads of the human combatants?

Makes perfect sense, right? NO need for a PC then.

You have the "computer brain" right in your head, along with your "human brain" and are all set for the next <Advanced Chess World Championship>.

OK-- if someone puts a chess engine chip in my head it means I'm dead.

OVER MY DEAD BODY BUSTER

I mean really.

Stupid engines.

HA! Although I used mine today to find out where I went wrong in losing to yet ANOTHER SMITH-MORRA

sigh.

Ok well at least I found out where, and much more importantly, WHY I went wrong.

My Engine confirmed the <Opening Explorer's> opinion that there are really only TWO strong or good moves from this position. The one I wanted to play was <Qc7> but I was afraid of <Nb5> but that is actually answered simply by <Qb8> and Black is perfectly fine. DAGNABBIT.

In a slightly different <Smith Morra> set-up last month I played <Qc7> where there was no answer to <Nb5> and I just "assumed" the move was alos verboten here. Dang it. I should have "forgotten" what I "knew" about this and ONLY analyzed the position at hand.

Yes, the <Smith Morra> is a stern mistress for the Black side.

Every move becomes critical right off the bat.

Ok you guys all probably know this already, and the <Opening Explorer> confirms this for me,

Here is a <major Smith Morra> line:

Black to play-

What's a good move here? (no peeking!) I'm kind of proud of myself for accidentally finding the main line OTB in my game, using only my brain-- right up to the moment I made the HOWLING BLUNDER that loses on the spot.

Ok Black to play--

jessicafischerqueen: HA! But why am I still in a good mood despite murdering yet another <smith morra>?

Cuz I won right after with my <Black Najdorf>. Which I am now able to play more successfully with Black rather than White.

Oh the irony-- after playing ONLY the White pieces for almost a year...

WHACKA I played two Black games in a row cuz I played two White games in a row last week.

now I'm even again!!

I'M GOING IN NOW FOR A THIRD SATURDAY GAME WITH THE WHITE PIECES!!

Apr-05-08  achieve: <Morphette>! Hallo!!

<DAGNABBIT> indeed... CG isn't working properly, but I lost ALL my 20 smith morra's from GameKnot because of that stupid crash... Guess I will have to pay for a membership to get the PGN downloads...

OK let's see if this gets through...

Back later.

Heh it's true.

LUBIMAR FTACKNIK!!!

I think he should marry

BATCHIMEG TUVSHINGTUNS!!

Then, they could play a thematic series in the dread

<Lasker-Paulsen-Pelikan_Scvhesningen-Noboritzky Varitaion with 7.Qh9 and 11...Rj4>

One of the most feared, and longest named, chess variations in history...

jessicafischerqueen: HAHAHAAH <Asian Girl Air Vocals>

Brilliant-- well chosen <Doctor>...

I played 3 games today <Doctor Euwe>!!

I lost my third one with white in an insane French game.

I actually had it won six times according to my Engine but I missed the tactical continutation during the game.

I missed a forced mate in five, in fact.

But I'm still feeling happy. A whole day for chess, finally!!

Plus I"m happy my <Black Najdorf> is still operational after so long off.

Plus that was the toughest opponent and the longest game.

Happy, eh? Gooooood!

Chess and psychology intrigue me no end...

Apr-05-08  achieve: Aha... Now I can see the SmMorra diagram you put up....

I'd say ...e5 and in this case Qc7 are playable...

I played a few experiments in all those Morras I played as White and went for the COMPLETE NOVELTY <6. Be2!? >

Won them both... and basically there is no way of dismissing the move... you just take your foot off the pedal a bit as White and develop soundly-- AND THEN you unleash the full power of your technique and blow the other guy off the board... In other words: Stepping on it-- give a little extra gas...

WHIPPAAAA

Remember <6. Be2 > is Dr. Niels>' novelty.... at least IT DRAWS!!!

hahaha!

jessicafischerqueen: <Doctor> I think I'm going to try the <Smoot Morra> with the White pieces tomorrow.

Why? well for three reasons:

A. I put my Engine on with no "book" function and tested it-- With Black, it will always take BOTH pawns in the "full Morra" version...

interesting eh? Stupid pawn grabbing piece of crap.

B. I keep losing with the black side.

C. I'm going to use <6.Be2>, then if I win I'm going to email the game score to the <Chess Informant> and tell them I invented the novelty.

I hope that's OK with you!!

Heh I just found out I get WEdnesday off work this week due to the Parliamentary Elections.

More chess for me then! My mind has cleared and I need to get more "rust" off.

Note to self-- play with patience-- Analyze post- game with patience--

Wait for it, wait for it...

jessicafischerqueen: Hey how do you put yourself on "ignore" function?

I can't remember if I did that before or not.

Is it possible?

I want to do some "statistics"

Apr-05-08  achieve: <Jess> I've heard someone do it, but I always asked someone to put me on ignore in order to find out my post ratio at a forum...

I could do that for you..

<6. Be2 > Of course in the main line (with 3.c3 dxc3 4. Nxc3 ... 5.Nf3 ...) where only 6.Bc4 has ever been played... I TRUST YOU TO CARRY THE TORCH WORTHY -- heh

I remember I couldn't judge the sharp turns in thr road at full speed on my racing bike... The chemicals really can have the nastiest side-effects...

Painkillers like Vicodin have destroted many lives because of the dependence one develops...

I bet when <Anna> is old enough to read she will be glad your last name is not <Greengables>.

(apologies if that is in fact your last name)

Apr-05-08  Red October: My last name is a lot more humorous than Greengables, luckily Anna would have the option of changing her name when she grows up and gets married :)

very exciting, family is down, so don't feel like analysing much of chess right now... but still must do my doodie in the Rattle of the Chains II!
