Apr-15-08  brankat: <jessicafischerqueen> Apparently, the word from the FBI is that they threatened to put E.Trice and Labate (not Labatt) in the same cell :-)

Thanks for sharing that beautiful tactic with me, with your usual <THOROUGH EXPLANATION>.

I found a winning tactic in my last game on Yahoo, and I swear to God I had a mental image of this:

<OVERWORKED DEFENDER>

Heh- his Queen had to cover two squares at the same time, and I found a move that "tired her out".

Thanks for that cool music!

Heh it seems a popular 80s videogame has also invaded our thread here...

Oh well I"m sure it will pass, especially if we don't "mention the war..."

(I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it)

German Women?

Heh... That would probably make for a <Labate Blue>, no?

HAHAHAHAAHAHAAH

Who is this Labbat's person anyways?

Is he famous like <Ed Trice>?

Apr-15-08  achieve: <Oh well I"m sure it will pass, especially if we don't "mention the war..."> What/which War?

Ahhhh - "Ze War"... - heh - I just pray you'll get to page 383 so we do not see a name like ted twice again...

Apr-15-08  Tactic101: <achieve>

I'll give it a try.

Rxd6, Qxd6 (what else?), fxe5, Qxe5 (anything else, exf6. White has won a fair amount of material for his rook), Bf4 and black's queen is trapped.

  jessicafischerqueen: Hi <Doctor>!!

Ok 2 minutes in now---

1.Rxd6 Qxd6
2.fxe6 Qxe6
3.Bd4

And now there is only one square the Black Queen can go and keep the Knight defended-- the g-5 square.

3...Qg5

and now

4.Nf3

Queen has only one square to go-- h6

and now

5.Bxf6

And White gets a Bishop and Knight for a rook and a pawn...

There may be better though.

I'm pretty sure my idea is forcing...

  jessicafischerqueen: I"m so stupid!!

<Tactic101> your solution is way better--

You win the Queen!!

Presumably Black would notice this and concede losing the Knight...

Or not!

Great puzzle solving!

Apr-15-08  achieve: Well done both of you!!

Hi Tactic! This one was too easy, I guess...

It's from a real GM game, with Dutch Chess icon <Donner> at the receiving end in that puzzle....

Apr-15-08  achieve: <PUZZLE>

Apr-15-08  Tactic101: Very nice endgame puzzle. I like it a lot! Weird to see Fischer on the losing side, though.
Apr-15-08  achieve: <Weird to see Fischer on the losing side, though.> Yes --- I think I read that Fischer (16 at the time) spent enormous amounts of time practising and improving his endgame technique and undertanding, in the early 60s...
Apr-15-08  achieve: From this game Alekhine vs O Naegeli, 1932 (Naegli missed the forced mate btw...)

Black to play and win (surprise, surprise!!)

Really interesting game AND position for a number of reasons...

Apr-15-08  achieve: PS. < 4 > kibitzes with this game but they tell the tale...
Apr-16-08  brankat: An earth-shattering piece of news from Magnus site, page 981 :-)

In an interview, Carlsen responds to a question about CG.com, and specifically in regards to <slomarko> :-)

Actually, it is quite genuine, there is a link there (Norwegian), and an English translation on C's page.

Apr-16-08  achieve: Brain broken? Nahh... Allow the doctor to help a bit--

Here's a position from: Najdorf vs Timman, 1980 -- featuring the <Great Jan Timman>, grabbing a pawn in a position that obviously does NOT allow it -- <Magnificent Miguel> puts his young opponent in his place with a simple theme that was overlooked by our Jan...

Timman (Black) has just captured the B3-pawn with his ♖ and Miguel grabs his chance...

(White to play)

I could call this "easy" - which it prolly is - but OTB at GM level anything can happen...

Apr-16-08  Boomie: <brankat: An earth-shattering piece of news from Magnus site, page 981 >

Or page 433 if you've ignored all the right people ;-> It comes up on 982 without ignores.
