| Apr-22-08 | | notyetagm: R Bertholee vs Judit Polgar, 1990 <syracrophy: After 35.Rxa7 it makes a perfect Wednesday puzzle (Black to play 35...?)> Black to play: 35 ... ?
click for larger viewWhat does Black want to play in this position? Place the Black d4-rook behind the passed Black b3-pawn and promote it, right? So that is exactly what GM Judit Polgar does! With 35 ... ♖d4-b4!!. Position after 35 ... ♖d4-b4!!

Reminds me of an instructional video I studied a few days ago, working out this <BEAUTIFUL THEME> in <VARIOUS> ways... Kidding aside, there are several related themes here - ALL underlining the inability to stop a pawn promotion, because the defending ROOK keeps getting blockaded by one of his own Pieces (King or pawn) White to play and win (this is scary)

| Apr-22-08 | | malthrope: <JFQ>, <notyetagm> & <achieve> Re: Puzzle of the Day (04/21/08) - R Bertholee vs Judit Polgar, 1990 - The position after 35. Rxa7 - Black to play and win... See <notyetagm>'s diagram of this position. What I *luv* about this puzzle it that it fully supports the axiom that <Rooks belong behind passed pawns!> ~lol~ Needless to say I won't tell you exactly how long it took me to solve it other than a really big smile was brightly beaming on my face within seconds. The reward as always is simply solving for the correct solution. The rest, as they say, is purely a matter of technique! ;) Regards, - Mal |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hello All!
Thank you for all the mail you've left me!!
I've been superbusy since Monday helping the students cram for their mid-terms--- But now they are writing them in the morning on Wed, Thurs, and Friday. So I get a half day off each day!!
I am playing a "pretend tournament" on Yahoo==
Since I can play chess for the next three afternoons and also Saturday, I will play SIX games at "classical" time controls-- three with Black and three with White. I'm using my "luck" <Alex_Grishuk> Yahoo ID since "he" seems to be playing well. I won the first game just now!!
Heh...
Now I will relax and catch up on ocrrespondence.
Oh and also go through the <Bok Choi> games, I haven't even had a chance to look at them yet. How come <CG.com> is not showing them live?? |

CG.com did address this prior to <brankat> and <Mal> prodding them just a bit to get the Euro Individual Chess Championship discussion pages up for both the Men's and the Women's division - which they did! ;) They wrote this re: Baku...
<Chessgames.com <Live Coverage of Baku> We may do that for the latter half of the tournament. Meanwhile the official site has pretty decent coverage: (http://livegames.fide.com/baku2008/...) and of course you can discuss them here: Baku Grand Prix (2008) > So, we should save the <nasty e-mail> for a real emergency! ~lol~ :^) My Best, - Mal |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hi <Mal>!! Heh that's a good idea-- however, having been almost banned several times, a "nasty email" from me isn't such a good idea... I wasn't always the "good CG.com citizen" I am today... That's an amazing tactic <notyetagm> showed us isn't it? Also, I still haven't solved <Niels'> thematic puzzle, so please don't give the answer yet!!! Yours,
Jess |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: heh no He was Russian composer <Scriabin> but now he's <Scriaba>!! It's not, since he was <Captain> during our game, it's just a logical progression: Captain-- Cappin-- Cappine-- K-Pain-- Cabin- Crabbin-- Carbon-- Scriabin-- Scriaba-- There was a tense moment when "Carbon" almost became "Car pool", but luckily <Scriaba> managed to head that one off at the pass... Oh oh-- Mommhy's going to be feeling good soon!!
Dom better watch his step about an hour from now.... |
