May-12-08  Ziggurat: Hi <jess>! Finally back from China (I'm sure you already figured out I had a good time there) and boy is Singapore hot! I missed the big earthquake in China by just an hour or so.

Speaking of good Dutch chess writers (you mentioned Krabbe) I had a nice surprise (well, I had ordered it from Amazon, but still) waiting for me: J H Donner's The King. I strongly recommend you to read it if possible, I think I already alienated some old ladies on the Singapore subway (sorry ... MRT) by giggling inappropriately and randomly. It is so funny. I may post some choice fragments here later. He writes a lot about Fischer as well.

jessicafischerqueen: BTW it wouldn't be necessary to read anywhere near all the pages of the <Jan Timman> game to write an accurate (and howlingly funny) book about it.

Three pages would probably do.

Three <well-chosen> pages...

Also, the "feelings of the participants" could not be a factor in writing such a book.

IE- the demands of such a narrative would have to supercede any consideration of a given individual's feelings.

I'm not saying the book should be mean-spirited-- far from it.

However, it should certainly be funny.

Mainly, because the thread is already funny.

Really, really funny.

The "chess nerd qua chess nerd" is an intrinsically humorous figure. The humanity of the "chess nerd" persona leaks out of the devotion to a board game.

That is- a "monopoly nerd" would have no pathos or grace as a "figure".

But even the most noxious and appallingly dull "chess nerd" partakes, perforce, of both pathos and grace due to the beauty and mystery of the <art of chess>.

And it is, most assuredely, an art.

Even if the "chess nerd" does not present as an "artist" in any recognizeable sense of the term.

It is this paradox that drives the humor and the majesty of such a quixotic and, frankly, picayune effort such as the <Great Jan Timman> game.

The real heart of such a study should, I think, properly be an analysis of the individual and/versus group psychology.

Focus on that, and both the humor and seriousness of the whole shenanigan would come out "by itself."

May-12-08  achieve: I see... Yes, such a World Book definitely would hugely benefit from participation of the two CG Giants you mentioned, and I'm actually quite convinced a few others would gladly help out, co-edit... Only needs a bit of lobbying, if at all...

I see enough possibilities to take some weight of off you, although I feel you deal yourself short with "patzer writer" --

<as Jessie would tell you if she wasn't so darn nice to me.>

Jess!!! Stop being so dam nice to Boomie and tell him he's a punk-ass writer!!

heh - well the fact that you guys (+Dom) get along so well should take care of any kind of hick up along the way...

May-12-08  achieve: Did I miss a few posts or what??

Holy ....

<It is this paradox that drives the humor and the majesty of such a quixotic and, frankly, picayune effort such as the <Great Jan Timman> game.>

jessicafischerqueen: Heh we can't forget <Doctor> cuz everything round here is written down in invisible Cyberspace.

I didn't lose anything when my old Labdog crashed cuz I have it all emailed to myself.

That means for me to lose my stuff, someone would have to blow up every IP tower in the world at the same time.

DAUNTING TASK

May-12-08  Eyal: Hi Jess, I had a chance to go over your game - well, it wasn't played on a very high level from both sides during most of the time, but still rather entertaining... I agree with Tim about your going for "KID game" - especially by advancing your kingside pawns - too automatically, without taking enough into account the specific nature of the position (especially that the center was wide open rather than closed with a White pawn chain on e4-d5, which is the classical set-up for the kind of game you tried to play). But as it turned out, your opponent lacked understanding and technique (as Niels said) to convert his advantage, and perhaps your active play also managed somehow to convince him that your position were much better than it actually was.

A couple of tactical points - after 23...Rfb8? you said Black loses because of a knight fork on the f7 square; it's actually a (potential) fork on g6 after 24.Qxe7!

Your final combination, beginning with 44...Bd4+, was quite nice. According to Fritz, <45...Rxg2> might be even stronger than fxg2+; and after your 46...Rxg2 White's only way not to lose is the intermediate move <47.h4!!>, taking care of the mating threats, where Black can't keep the rook - e.g., 47...Qg7 48.Rxh5+ Kg8 49.Qxd5+ with a winning attack; or 47...Rg1+ 48.Kh2 and Black has nothing better than 48...Bf6. Interestingly, 47.h3 with a similar idea wouldn't work because of 47...Qxf5! 48.Bxf5 Rg1+ 49.Kh2 Rcg7 50.Qd8+ Rg8 51.Qxd5 Rd1! threatening both mate and winning the queen with Bg1+; with the pawn on h4 (and the h3 square free for the king) there wouldn't be a mate threat here, and White would win by 52.Qe6.

jessicafischerqueen: Heh better safe than sorry.

No worries on the chess front <Doctor>, as always, I need accurate damage reports. iT'S An out and out Blessing that I can get analytic feedback from Doctors such as you and <GM Timofeev>.

I shall contintue to enjoy study and play, and I'm not going to get anxious about it.

I'm enjoying the chess I'm playing these days and I feel more confident than I ever have before in my life.

The "play a guy 50 points (slightly stronger)" formula seems to make a lot of sense to me as a lifetime's idea for chess play.

No challenge, no fun.

and when I reach my "ceiling," as we all do, it's still a great forumula.

IE- it's better to win ONE game against a stronger player than TEN THOUSAND games against somebody who can't offer you enough resistance to "stretch your mental legs".

AROOOOOO

(Doctor buy some Air Con it won't break the bank man. Best 380 bucks I ever spent in my life so far).

WHADKFJKD

(pLUS i played "better moves" in my second game today-- even though I only got a draw-- Heh- it's the game I posted at your house. And this time my SHREDDY'S ON MY SIDE)

wHEE I play bad, I win, I play better, I draw.

It's all part of the merry go round we call CHESS RACING ACTION.

May-12-08  hms123: <jfq> I am not surprised that you were the one to capture the essence. the computer needs to work for us. I work at a major university but there are many of my colleagues who will say things like "the computer won't let us do that." I say,"why not? get a new computer!"

<User: domdaniel> as well.

NIELS!

AIR CON!

(not so expensive as you might think- you only need a little one and one room to cool down).

Bucket of water-- Heh...

Never worry about whupping ass, Coach, it's part of what makes a great chess instructor.

Like when <Bruce Pandolfini> suddenly lunges and knocks all the pieces of the board, and yells at little 7- year old <Josh>:

"There! That should make it easier for you!!"

heh...

May-12-08  achieve: I have opened up cans of WHUPASS in my earlier coaching years and locked out a boy in the freezing cold because he was late again... Should I have said I expected him to do some exercises to keep warm?

At least I learned to "think for myself" as a kid, and I expected my pupils tio do the same... Mind you I was working with a carefully selected crop from a 60 mile radius...

But with you I tend to stay more mellow... stupid word "mellow"

Yes the bucket water was nice!

(I drank it all up while I was "in there" - dang it...)

May-12-08  achieve: At least I'm "hydrated" now, which is the best remedy when "in heat"

And I will try and get a air con cuz the writings on the wall with these temps already in early May...

jessicafischerqueen: Your coaching style with me is 'just right' as far as I'm concerned.

I couldn't be happier.

You shoulda kept that kid outside till he froze solid....

NO EXCUSE FOR LATENESS@!!!

Air Con- not just a bad Nichoal Cage movie...

May-12-08  Ziggurat: Donner writing about Tal:

<He is twenty-two years old now, this dark Latvian. Never have I seen anyone pace up and down so impressively. As is well known, nearly half the participants at chess tournaments loaf around, which usually means that they are pacing up and down. Smyslov is the slowest in the field. Ståhlberg is somewhat quicker, and his head is slightly atilt. Awesome is Botvinnik's pacing. He only gets up from the board when his opponent is utterly lost. In the case of Fuderer, 'pacing' is hardly the term. It is hopping, rather, strutting about like a little bantam cock. He also talks to other players occasionally. The same with Najdorf, who is buttonholing people all the time with his famous question: 'Bin ich nicht genial?'

All this, however, is far too human to compare with Tal's pacing up and down. When Tal has made a move, he puts both his hands upon the table and, with a sigh, pushes himself up. For a while, he stands behind his chair, surveying the results of his labour, and then it begins. He does it, I think, with his shoulders. It is, I believe, the extremely complicated counter-movement of his arms that creates the impression of a tiger stalking up and down. At the same time, he is somewhat like an elephant. When someone gets into his way, they immediately step aside. Yes, he is most like an elephant, with his enormous nose and his eyes too far apart.>

May-12-08  Ziggurat: BTW, even better is the description of what Petrosian looks like when playing blitz, see link below:

Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian

May-12-08  achieve: Screw you! I liked it!! (Nako line on Deja Vu?)

Actually I liked "The Rock" from the Bruckheimer Kitchen, with a pretty funny Nicholas Cage there... And when Con Air came out I just bought the VHS tape by mail order automatically...

That was back when I was still "capable" to buy whatever I wanted...

But I guess I liked The Rock much better...

I saw it first in the cinema theatre, here in Amsterdam back in the early 90s, with my nephew, and I still remember busting a gut every 5 minutes because of Cage's (clumsy) Stanley Goodspeed, was it?, character and being the only one in the theatre who couldn't stop laughing at every thing he said... Fond memories, though my nephew looked at me and thought: please, not again...

But it was one of those days.

If you think my coaching style is "just right" (what a gimme) - I'm pretty sure there's room for improvement... IE - I may "toughen up" a tad.

May-12-08
Premium Chessgames Member
jessicafischerqueen: No toughening up please <Doctor>!

chess has to be fun first and foremost.

IE- I don't want improving to be a "goal"--

If I start thinking of it as a goal then somehow I go outside the world of chess as I love to study and play it.

I doh't want tough!

I'm already tough enough on myself.

Relaxing would probably improve my game.

IE- Boomie's comments about trying too hard to be "intelligent" as opposed to just relying on "common sense."

That said, at the end of the day, any style of comment you want to make on any aspect of my study or games is welcome. That's up to you!

Just letting you know how I feel right off the bat as usual.

WAHJDLFDJFDLKJFFLDK

(notice Ziggurat has bought the famous <GM Donner> book)...

May-12-08  achieve: "I'll do as I see fit"

(heh - remember? I said it to Branko when he "advised" me)

Don't worry - I've been there, know what I'm doing, and I know you a bit by now...

JE COMPRENDS! as you well know ;-) (that's a <wink>-smiley))

NOW RELAX! - (gol dangit)

May-12-08  achieve: And <Ziggu>'s quotes are priceless, of course... (nice deflection :P)

Famous family of crook politicians Donner came from... He clearly went his own way re the non conforming to family traditions...

jessicafischerqueen: Yes, and his descriptive writing skills are breathtaking.

I'm ordering the Book from the English Book store in town PRONTO.

Did you go to the <petrosian> link to read more?

Also, spookily enough, I didn't even know who he was until today.

I was studying a <Majnu> YouTube vid on a <Reshevsky v. Donner> game--

I've been watching a lot of <Majnu> and <Canstein> vids lately.

Heh GM Donner is Dutch!

Who knew?

  jessicafischerqueen: search "Donner"
May-12-08  achieve: <Jess> Of course I agree with every word you say upthere... No question.

You're first and foremost a friend, a teacher, and after that a fellow Chess enthusiast and student.

<Donner> He clearly steered away from the Donner traditions by not following the paths of his ancestors and study at Leiden University and become a server of the crown and God Almighty --- he went to Amsterdam, played Chess, had fun, got drunk sometimes, and of course enjoyed the intellectual company of people like Harry Mulisch, one of Hollands best ever novelists, with whom he had quite a few things in common, re their world view...

But of course I never met him and what I've read is of course second hand...

Fischer once demanded to have Donner's hotel room during a tourny, and of course Donner had the perfect motivation to beat Bobby up a few days later... He knew how to play chess alright.

May-12-08  achieve: Jinx

Yes he was In between Euwe and Timman agewise, as one of Holland´s greatest Chessplayers...

May-12-08  achieve: From Branko´s forum

May-08-08 nescio: J.H.Donner on R.J.Fischer (Varna 1962):

"The next year both of us were at the Varna Olympiad. Soon after the beginning of the tournament he noticed that I lived in a very nice hotel room and he demanded of the organizers that the room would be given to him. Very much resisting I was indeed relocated to a small room next to the eternally buzzing airconditioning device, while he triumphantly moved into my room. Needless to say, at the board I then defeated him."
