In the world of big-time bridge, there are often wealthy player/sponsors of championship-level teams. The team is called by the sponsor's name (e.g., "the BigBucks team") by newspapers etc. Teams often have 6 players so that some time off is possible. The only rule is that the sponsor has to play at least half of the hands (same for everyone on the team).

The rest of the players on the team are professionals (by definition) and get paid quite well. Those in the know, know.

Jun-30-08  notyetagm: Chess piece point value

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_...

Larry Kaufman's research

International master Larry Kaufman performed a computer analysis of thousands of games by masters to determine the average relative value of the pieces. He determined (to the nearest ยจรน point) the following:

pawn = 1
knight = 3 1/4
bishop = 3 1/4
rook = 5
queen = 9 3/4

Add an additional 1/2 point for having both bishops. <<<Kaufman elaborates about how the values of knights and rooks change, depending on the number of pawns on the board: "A further refinement would be to raise the knight's value by 1/16 and lower the rook's value by 1/3 (? -ed. can't read the fraction) for each pawn above five of the side being valued, with the opposite adjustment for each pawn short of five." (Kaufman 1999).>>>

So the -MORE- pawns on the board, the move valuable the knight and the less valuable the rook. While with -FEWER- pawns on the board, the more valuable the rook and the less valuable the knight.

Makes sense. With lots of pawns on the board knights are very strong since there are so few open lines. While on an open board with few pawns rooks are simply monstrous.

Jun-30-08  ravel5184: <Domdaniel> Here's a little brainteaser:

If the Queen could move like a Queen but also like a Knight, what is the Queens domination number for different-sized chessboards? For instance, the Queens domination number for the 5x5 chessboard is 1 (a Queen on c3 controls the normal squares a3, b3, etc. and also a4, b5, d5, etc.) What is the Queens domination number for 8x8 chessboards and beyond? Is there a general formula for calculating queens domination numbers?

Be sure to get this great book <Across the Board> by J Watkins.

Yes. Or, rather, I'm sure there must be, but I'm too tired to work it out.

I don't know the Watkins book - will check it out, thanks. I think I saw something similar in one of Martin Gardner's puzzle books, though his chess tends to be pretty basic.

  Domdaniel: <hms123> Check out the team names in the world or European *chess* team competitions. Some are old-style clubs or cities, but more and more are sponsors. It's spreading.

There are also weird anomalies: sports journalists always mention the sponsors, but arts writers refuse to. Hard to say with chess - any mainstream media attention is unusual.

Draw a continuous shape consisting of only right angles that connects all the White pawns without any lines crossing, and do the same for the Black pawns without any lines crossing the White Pawn line.

Solution:

White a8-a4-c4-c7-f7-f4-g4-g8-a8,
Black b1-b3-d3-d5-e5-e3-h3-h1-b1

A little something to amuse Madam while the Pacific crawls by? That Stout Cortez guy sure has a lot to answer for. Of course everyone knows now that the Chinese reached America first, circumnavigated the globe, and technically have the first claim on the Malvinas/Falklands.

Jul-03-08  Boomie: Good afternoon!

Another birthday tucked under my belt. My fans are already celebrating with fireworks. I asked them to wait 2 days to conserve their ordinance but they are overcome with exuberance. Perhaps the national holiday in my honor has driven them wonky. Could it be they celebrate a bunch of rich, old white men who created a country, invited over a bunch of immigrants and sold them cars? I don't think so!

Jul-03-08  Boomie: Perhaps all the owl avatars can be brought together for a hooter contest. I'm looking forward to the wet feather competition. 8->
