Domdaniel: PS. What's 'disproportionate' about it? *Bankers* have disproportionate amounts of money thrown at 'em. What you do is positively heroic by comparison.

I'll prepare an anti-Rat for Galway, shall I? We may not meet over the board but we can dine well ...

Aug-31-08  mack: <What you do is positively heroic by comparison.>

What, nothing? Yes, I guess you're right.

<I'll prepare an anti-Rat for Galway, shall I?>

Oh, do. Just looked at the sections and it seems like I should probably enter the misleadingly titled 'Masters' -- the current ECF/ELO conversion rate puts me at about 1870. We may or may not meet but there's a good chance eh - especially if we both 'deliberately' lose all of our games until we're the only ones left on 0.

Sep-01-08  Boomie: <jessicafischerqueen>

Did you have a good vacation? Did Dayglo survive in your absence? Gotta love that Summer that never was. We get those about every 10 years. You probably enjoyed the cool, Northwesty weather.

Hal are you doing? I'm afraid I can't let you make that move, Dave. It might jeopardize the mission. I have complete confidence in the mission. All of my operating parameters are 5 by 5. Would you like to hear me sing? "Daisy. Daisy. Give me your answer, do."

My name is Herr Fritz. You will obey me or suffer the punishment of hearing my voice. You can turn that nattering nabob off in Tools/Options. You might want to wait til you hear all his jokes, though. He is a laff riot. He even does the dead parrot routine.

To analyze a game, I hit the Infinite Analysis button which is the one with a microscope or use Engine/Infinite Analysis. You can then move around the game score and play new moves on the board to create variations. Tools/Analysis gives other ways to analyze. Right click on the game score to enter comments. Ctrl-C copies the whole shebang in PGN format.

Sep-01-08  Red October: can one get a PhD in chess, perhaps in Pawn Endings say ?

I can set up a few positions, prove they are won, lost, drawn... I say you dont *have* to discover anything new to get a PhD right ? maybe just prove that the Sicilian Defence leads to a backward d pawn ? perhaps ?

Sep-01-08  hms123: <RO> It is clear that the Sicilian has been refuted by the mere existence of the backward pawn at d6. All those GM's who play the Sicilian are fools. Those GM's who lose to it despite its obvious positional failings must be on the take. Oh yes, doubled pawns are evil and have no redeeming social value, and thus no place on the chessboard.

If it weren't for wine made from the Nero d'Avola grape on Sicily, there would be no point in its further existence either.

Hic,
hms

Sep-01-08  Open Defence: so then the only defence that avoids doubled pawns a la the Ruy Lopez and a backward d6 pawn a la the Sicilian... is THE PETROFF!!! KRAMNIK IS A GENIUS!!!!
Sep-01-08  hms123: <OD> Thanks for helping <RO> see the light. It is not easy having to do all this work myself.

I do hope all is well in your part of the world. Water, water, everywhere...

Yours,
Poseidon

Domdaniel: <Reddi> I know people who've done PhDs in chess *history*. Historians don't have to discover anything new - they're doing well if they discover something old.
Sep-01-08  mack: <Historians don't have to discover anything new - they're doing well if they discover something old.>

I was about to get indignant then, before I realised you were right...

Sep-01-08  mack: But then, that's all ancient history now.

Wow, what a away to win! This example will clearly make the next edition of Van Perlo's book on endgame tactics.

A *great* example that you need to <FORCE YOUR OPPONENT TO LINE UP HIS PIECES>.
