Sep-19-08  Woody Wood Pusher: <JFQ> I see you are also talking about computer chess.

I have played almost every computer program out there and make a point of beating them (eventually). Beating Chessmaster is the best because then you get to print out a certificate! (I continued to buy the new releases just for that feature)

I find all the 'online' engines quite weak, apart from that one called Jester which can be a little tricky! (have you tried that one?)

I have not got my hands on Rybka yet, but when my PC gets repaired I will try and take it, although I gather it is a fair bit stronger than anything else out there.

One strategy that I use is to go for openings with uneven pawn oppositions and also that can lead to relatively quick piece exchanges. For example, play into the sicilian and castle queenside, then just try and exchange as many pieces as possible. That leaves your white king + 3 pawns on the queenside against 2 black pawns (and usually 3 v 4 pawns + black king on kingside)

Usually the 3p + K v 2p can race to a queen faster than 4p + K v 3p but the computer cannot see this far ahead and by the time it realises what is happening it is losing badly!

Sep-19-08  Woody Wood Pusher: Your topic of computer chess made me nostalgic, so I played Little Chess Partner again for old times sake....here is the game if you are interested:

Sep-19-08  Boomie: <just a kid: Here is a game I played recently>

Hi, kid. I liked playing over your game. Thanks for posting it.

In the opening, white usually plays a strange looking move after 5...Bg6. The main line is 6. h4 h6 7. Nf3 (a better way to protect d4 than Be3) Nd7 8. h5 Bh7 9. Bd3 Bxd3 10. Qxd3

click for larger view

After you play a game, look at the opening in the Opening Explorer to get an idea what is usually played. Anyway good game. Pretty finish. Good luck in your next game.

Sep-19-08  Woody Wood Pusher: <JFQ> Glad to hear you are feeling better! I can't say I have any personal experience but I imagine it must get pretty lonely at times being in a foreign country and working (as opposed to holidaying) I'm really impressed with people like you who do it so kudos to you from England!

As for Little Chess Partner, I'm sure you can cut it down to size if you try seriously! The engine is really weak in the opening and gets into a lot of difficulty if you play sharp e.g.

Me-White LCP-Black

1. e4, c5
2.Nf3,Nc6
3.d4,cxd4
4.Nxd4,e5
5.Nb5,Nf6
6.Nbc3,Bb4?!
7.Nd6+,Bxd6
8.Qxd6,a6?
9.Bg5,b5?
10.Nd5,Nxe4
11.Nc7+, and it is forced to give up Queen for Knight + Bishop

Try this out, it played it a couple of times with me lol

It plays a little better in the middle-game but has a habit of advancing the pawns around its king too much, so encourage that and attack!

In the endgame, if you have even a 1 pawn advantage over it at that stage it usually plays absolutely horrible chess. It can't calculate passed pawns it seems and ignores them until it is almost lost. It also gives up its own pawns at this stage so its king can stroll around meaninglessly LOL.

If blitz is not your thing, take your time and I am sure you will beat it! It does look 5-6 plys ahead, but it doesn't always consider the best moves so (piece blindness induced blunders aside) I am convinced of your victory!

Post the victory when you get it, I would really like to see it!

Good Luck!

jessicafischerqueen: Heh- thanks to good friends <Dom, Woodman, Tim, Howard, Deffi, Eyal> and.. above all others for his kindness, expertise, and dedication to helping me improve and enjoy my chess-- <NIELS THE FRIENDLY ACCURATE ANALYSIS ELEPHANT>...

I managed to play a passable game this morning on <Yahoo> with <1.c4>!

Heh... In the opening, I sacced my h-pawn to open the h-file....

Many moves later we are here:

Black has just moved

28...c5?

click for larger view

/

I was in a bad psychological state before he played this move, since although I believe i still have compensation for my sacced pawn, Black has at least a slight advantage.

However, luckily, although I've been trying to learn to play more sound positional chess, I'm still going through the <tactical check list> before every move:

1.Make sure you aren't hanging something
2. Examine all possible captures and checks- every time, every move

HEH--

So after about five minutes I'm thinking "I don't really want to retreat my Bishop.

So I didn't!!

29.Bxg7!

WHEEE

click for larger view

Heh-- my bishop is immune, and I expected him to realize this. But even if he plays something like <29...Nxf5>, I just go <30.Bb2> and White has advantage and initiative.

However, he did not in fact take his time and realize my Bishop is immune here.

He took with his king:

29...Kxg7

And of course promptly loses his Queen and the game due to

30.f7 <FORK>!!!!

heh...<FORK>!!

As my old pal <Shropshire> once told me while thumping me in Blitz, after typing <FORK> in the chat box he followed with <Sometimes you just have to yell that @#$% out>.

Whoopa

FINAL POSITION: Black resigns- and another victory for <ENGLAND>.

Yes, <England>... <1.c4> up yer bum buddy and TALLY HO!@!

click for larger view

And the best part of all--

He just resigned and fled the table.

No <Good Game> etc.

I ALWAYS type <Good luck> at the start and <Good game> at the end, win or lose, ESPECIALLY if I lose.

NOT because I'm polite-- I am most certainly not polite-- but I don't want to give anyone the satisfaction of knowing they <crushed my ego>.

I LOVE <crusing the ego> of my opponent.

Heh...

Well chess is a <war game>.

Shoot me.

Sep-20-08  achieve: That was, my dear <Jess>, a, what we call-- <FLUSH ROYALE D'ANGLETERRE>

For a moment there I though Nxf5 would also lose quickly, but not to be... B back to b2 and the damn steed will mount <D4 HILL> - from which he prolly would need to be shot off subito... Maybe an endgame win?

Would have kept you two in the room a bit longer.

Sep-20-08  Boomie: <Jess Who Would be an Englishman Except for One Minor Problem>

What's the sound of an ego deflating? Like when you let go of a balloon maybe? Nice <Demolition of Hopes and Dreams> combination. I'm curio. What was black's last move? Qe7? Nh6? How long was this Bxg7 sitting there, I wondered aloud? Remember Spielmann's comment about Mrs. Alekhine's hubby? "I can solve the combinations but I don't know how to get there from here".

I'm sure there's a point to all this which is devastatingly clever and informative. I guess the trick is to see Bxg7 and arrange the position to take advantage of it if possible. Maybe akin to stocking up on resources like Mormons putting food by in case of rapture.

jessicafischerqueen: Heh <Niels> yes but he was psychologically broken at that point because he had overlooked the tactic, I think. I had no doubt I would have prevailed even after he made the correct move.

<Boomie> YOU BETTER NOT BE BEING SARCASTIC ABOUT MY BRAGGING BUSTER

I've been suffering all week from "chess patzer depression" and today's been a banner day--

even more to post soon as I analyze it.

In answer to your question, I had my DSB on that tasty diagonal the whole game.

Black's prevous move was

27... Pawn (e5) takes Pawn (d4)

and my following move was

28. Bishop (b2) takes Pawn (d4)

Then he played

28...Pawn (c4) to (c5), which brings us to the first FEN I posted.

I'm sorry Tim but I've got all my Engines to tell me what a CRAP player I am.

It's not my fault he let me back into the game with the latent power of my DSB-- Hey I put the dam thing on a good diagonal, typical of many <English> set ups for white.

He's in my ratings range and it's the first decent game I played in two weeks and I've got my confidence back.

Also, and more importantly, psychology is 99 percent of my ability to play chess.

And the psychological lift of knowing I was slightly worse, and grimacing at the thought of a tough and probably losing end game if there was a big trade-down, the "shift" from that perspective to finding the <Bxg7> and knowing that the advantage (though slight-- just under a pawn, according to Shredder)-- shifts to me instead-- that was ELECTRIFYING to my chess brain and soul. I live for these precise moments on the board.

Now the psychological lift from finding this move--

It allowed me to play game 2 (another <1.c4> agaisnt a stronger rated player and I am so elated right now--

I feel like <Bobby Fischer>.

I sacced a rook and a knight and drove his King up the board and I bloody checkmated her.

heh...

I WAS WEEPING JUST LAST NIGHT CUZ I COULDNT SEE THE LOGIC BEHIND A BOTVINNIK GAME FOR CRIPE SAKE.

on the other hand, your <tough love> is always treasured.

I just had to vent a little there.

Mrs. <To enjoy crushing other people's egos means that you yourself have a tender ego>.

(I'm well aware of why Fischer is my favorite player-- Holy reverse Electra or what the heck complex the first time I beat my Dad I almost had a heart attack. I was hooked for life-- not just on the beauty of chess- but of "killing my father"- at chess anyways.)

I HOPE THAT'S CLEARED A FEW THINGS UP

jessicafischerqueen: OK game Two from today--

I'm playing a woman who has a higher rating than me.

I open <1.c4>, and in the transition from opening to middle game my "plan" is to restrict her mobility.

And we reach this position-- where I've actually just made an inaccurate move--

27.Q(c2)-(b3)...

Now BLACK to play...

My idea of 27.Qb3 was to force her to lose the exchange on the <e5 square>-- however, in fact I would also lose my e- and f- pawns along with my Knight in exchange for her Rook, so the resulting position should be equal, but she makes an even bigger mistake than I did.

click for larger view

She SHOULD of course play <27...Rxe5>, surrendering the exchange, but subequently picking up my e- and f- pawns in compensation. That would have made the position roughly equal.

HOWEVER-- she got greedy maybe for material and played

27...Nxe4?

click for larger view

Looks tasty to the eye for Black, at first glance maybe-- but I had already calculated my response to this move in case she made it.

28.Nxf7!

click for larger view

heh- she's losing now but not totally lost, but she sure is after she grabs my Rook--

28...Nxd2??

click for larger view

WHOOPA now I get to play a dream move...

29.Nxh6++ <DOUBLE CHECK> heh

click for larger view

Now...

29...Kh7 (forced>
30.Qg8+ Kxh6

Giving us this position:

click for larger view

Heh- I'm down a Rook and a Knight, but I have <FORCED MATE>...

Do you see the forced mate?

OK- This was exhilirating to be able to play.

Perversely, although I FAILED to see at the start of this sequence that my <27.Qb3> wouldn't give me the big advantage I thought it would--

--I overlooked how I would lose my e- and f- pawns as well as my Knight in exchange for her Rook on the e5 square--

I DID in fact calculate the sequence I just showed here right to the end of the forced mate BEFORE I moved <27.Qb3>.

That is, in my calculating, I thought OK what if she takes <27...Nxe4> and then I go <28.Nxf7> and then she goes <28...Nxd2>....

And I actually calculated the forced mate line to the end. However, never in my wildest dreams did I think she would actually overlook the dangers of pursuing this line.

Sep-20-08  Boomie: <jessicafischerqueen: OK game Two from today-->

Very pretty. And I liked the game, too. Always nice to have the king participate in the mate.

I'm going to take a nap now. When I wake up, if the mate is on the table, I'll know I have a little chess partner.

Sep-20-08  Eyal: <Jess> That's a really great way to finish two games one after the other, well done! In the second combination, though, 28.Nxf7 was perhaps the prettiest move but actually not quite the best one:

click for larger view

Here, after 28.Nxf7 Kh7 29.Nxd8 Nxd2 30.Rxd2 Rxd8 Black is still alive, whereas the more forcing <28.Qxf7+> doesn't leave Black any hope at all, e.g. 28...Kh8 29.Bxf8 (eliminating the defender of g6 and opening the d file) Rxf8 29.Ng6+ Kh7 30.Nxf8+ Rxf8 31.Qg6+ Kh8 32.Rd7 Rg8 33.Rf7 followed by Rdd7 or Re1 and it's curtains for Black.

Btw, Fritz indicates that instead of 27.Qb3, which - as you pointed out - allows Black to get back 2 pawns for the exchange with 27...Rxe5, a better move is the (again) more forcing 27.Nxf7! (heh) Kxf7 28.Qb3+ Ne6; White wins back the piece and also doesn't have to capture it at once, but can first increase the pressure by 29.e5 or Rd4.

Sep-20-08  Eyal: PS Regarding the last line - in case of 27.Nxf7 <Nxe4> 28.Nxd8 Nxd2 29.Rxd2 Rxd8 we get basically the same position that could have occurred in the game had your opponent played 28...Kh7 instead of Nxd2??, but that should be better for White than the position reached by 27.Qb3 Rxe5(!) 28.Bxe5 Rxd2+ 28.Rxd2 Nxe4 followed by Qxf5.
Sep-20-08  Eyal: There's some commentary on the Botox game that made you cry (by someone we don't like very much, though...) at http://www.lifemasteraj.com/old_af-...
Sep-20-08  notyetagm: Sokolsky vs Botvinnik, 1938

Black to play: 26 ... ?

click for larger view

26 ... d4-d3!

click for larger view

26 ... d4-d3! is a *beautiful* move by Botvinnik, combining the tactical theme <PASSED PAWN VERSUS ROOK TRICK> and <WEAK BACK RANK>.

White *cannot* capture the Black e5-knight with 27 ♕e2x♘e5?? ♕f6x♕e5 28 ♖e1x♕e5 as then 28 ... d3-d2 wins for Black.

(VAR) 27 ♕e2x♘e5?? ♕f6x♕e5 28 ♖e1x♕e5 d3-d2 <passed pawn versus rook trick>

click for larger view

click for larger view

Then the only way to prevent the Black d2-passer from promoting is by 29 ♗f1-e2 but then Black simply <RELOADS> on the d1-square and mates White on the <BACK RANK> by 29 ... d2-d1=♕+ 30 ♗e2x♕d1 ♖d8x♗d1+ 31 ♖e5-e1 ♖d1x♖e1#, shown below.

An *excellent* example of <TACTICS IN THE SERVICE OF STRATEGY>. With 26 ... d4-d3! the powerful passed Black d-pawn takes a *giant* step towards promotion, a move made possible only by the underlying tactical condiderations.

Sep-20-08  Woody Wood Pusher: Some great games <JFQ> I particularly liked 28.Nxf7 followed by the one horse stampeding of black's king.
Sep-20-08  hms123: <jess> As usual, I am late to the party, but both games were great. I really liked that you played <Nxf7> even if wasn't best. It showed that you are freeing up your game and willing to take a shot without worrying about all the possibilities that might follow.

My own (informal) theory of skill acquisition is that you work, work, work, and then jump to the next level, then work, work, work, jump, and so on. My prediction--you are ready to jump up--and soon.
