| Oct-12-08 | | klangenfarben: I almost cited the script to that episode. I totally relate to Cartman's marrow-deep loose-cannon antipathy to nearly everything right and wrong in the world. It's amazing that Tampa Bay, Miami, Columbus and Nashville gained NHL teams while Winnipeg and Quebec City lost theirs, and not due to disinterest. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Yes- and in the case of the <Nordiques>, who went on the win the Stanley Cup THE VERY NEXT SEASON as the <South Park Rockies>, establishing a dynasty, it was due solely to the <almighty buck> and "ownership issues." Owning a hockey franchise is not an "earner" for the owner-- not even an effective tax write off. Normally the owners do it for the prestige, or gasp-- sometimes for the love of the sport. Of course, back in the day-- when <Conn Smythe> ruled <Maple Leaf Gardens> as his private Kingdom-- and they paid hockey players in Monopoly Money-- Ownership was lucrative. <Ted Lindsay> sacrificed his hockey career to establish the first player's union, after which salaries gradually rose to today's astronomical levels. <Gordie Howe> refused to join his teammate in the new player's association-- he was the highest paid player at the time garnering <1000 dollars American per annum>... The scab.
I saw a good movie about this on the CBC. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hi <Woody>!
For God sake get your Preemy membership back so you can watch the games with us here on <CG.com>. You certainly don't want to be hanging with "the great unwashed" who keep posting the most ridiculous nonsense on the <World Champ Page>. It's already the lowest quality thread on the site and the games haven't even started yet. Possilby <Mr. Pickles> ate your postal order? Plus I want to start spamming your forum again. |
|
| Oct-13-08 | | Woody Wood Pusher: <JFQ> No, I can't blame this on Mr. Pickles, I forgot to follow the guidelines when using the post in England and only posted the letter once instead of three copies from three different postcode areas...what was I thinking?! I'm going to re-buy in time for the first game though! So my forum will be open for spamming shortly. As for the Anand-Kramnik thread, I make no apologies for helping to turn it into a farce. I can admit, where Drawnik is concerned I am a troll, but somebody has to take a stand against him short-drawing to another huge payday! |
|
| Oct-13-08 | | Woody Wood Pusher: I actually think my latest Anand-Kramnik thread post catches the mood nicely.. <Drawnik has Fritz installed in his toilet, Shredder laser-etched into his glasses, Rybka stitched into his boxers, Hiarcs stuffed deeper than any cavity search will ever uncover and Rebel disguised as a third nipple.Bring it on!> |
|
| Oct-13-08 | | Boomie: <Woody Wood Pusher: <JFQ> As for the Anand-Kramnik thread, I make no apologies for helping to turn it into a farce. > You think it's a farce now, wait til game night. I will be springing my patented Don Dunphy boxing commentary. "Ne5! He can't take it there!" I've worked out a dramatic entrance routine which should offend the sentimental slobs. That should being them out in the open where we can get a better shot at them. I can hear the self righteous indignation now. Jessie and I will be spamming unmercifully as usual. I can't imagine what twisted syntax she has stored up for this event. If her folded sentence is any indication, we are in for a treat. How many variations on the name Kramnik can there be? She will let us know. We'll supply the popcorn. All spammers are welcome. |
|
| Oct-13-08 | | klangenfarben: <boom> <jfq> nothing against your two posts in my forum, I just felt it best that I counterpunch the forthcoming pushback on my lonesome. |

Yes well done man. Never worry about deleting my posts, as I frequently delete from my forum. Usually when I've got chess analysis in here.
I have to admire your fortitude.
Reminds me of the very fine old Western with <Jimmy Stewart>, "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance". When I first saw this film i was a kid back in Vancouver and they had it on the "movie channel." They were advertising it like this:
"Nobody shoots <KlangenFarben's> brother and gets away with it!" Your plan to hold the <Bridge at Remagen> all by yourself also recalls <High Noon>, of course. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Timporary Bridge Struts> Heh-- perhaps <KlangenFarben> is aware of what happened in <your> forum when "someone" criticized "someone" at the G-Man page without mentioning "any names" even. That affair ultimately ended up with the administrators dropping a nuclear bomb in your forum. Possibly <KlangenFarben> is avoiding such an outcome with his resolution to "go it alone." At any rate, I have to respect his wishes.
Heh-- <Washed Asparagus>-- <Kanned Ham>... And luckily 80 per cent of the Premium members have me on ignore, which makes it easier to spam. WHOPPA |

I think you are covering this up!
The smart money says that <Mr. Pickles> ate your money order before it even got to the post office... |

| Oct-13-08 | | Woody Wood Pusher: <The smart money says that <Mr. Pickles> ate your money order before it even got to the post office...> hehehe There may well be some truth in that..
Not long to go now until the drawing of colours...anybody know what gimmick they have planned? I heard they have placed an envelope in the ceiling of each bathroom, inbetween some cables, the players have to get to the envelopes and replace the ceiling intact. First one to do this gets to chose the colours. My money is on Drawnik here, he has all the experience. |

| Oct-13-08 | | hms123: <jess> If not Columbus, then who discovered Canada? After all, he gets credit for discovering California (and presumably Alaska--although he might want to re-think that if he were alive today). |

HAPPY HALLOWEEN <OPEN DEFIANCE>!! |
|
| Oct-13-08 | | hms123: <jess> Thanks for that historical perspective on the discovery of Canada. I am a little confused, though, because I thought Atlantis was in the <Boomuda triangle> and couldn't be found except by <springbok revelers> from US universities. I can't believe that I missed all the excitement. Things must really go <boomie> in the night. |

Just thought you would like to know... I just posted this in my Profile as a further tribute to Bobby: ____________________________________________

Your devotion to him knows no bounds. I fondly recall how excited I was to be following 'Fischer & Tal' as a young teenager at the tender age of 13. Gosh! It was such an exciting time. <grin> Have a cute chess story to tell you about Tal <SUPER blast GM grin>... I met him for the very first time in 1991 when he played here at the Pan-Pacific International Chess Tournament held in San Francisco. ____________________________________________
<"Tal's in town!">
There was an arranged special party held in Berkeley at a private residence (March 13, '91). It was there that he graciously signed my books (having already met Tal many times previously during the course of this wonderful tourney, as well as all of the other planed special chess activities). As, I'd taken with me every bloody chess book that I had within my library that was either written about him, or by him to the chess party. That towering stack of Tal books was almost two feet high (stacked flat) and included between 14-16 books minimum. When I first arrived to the wonderful party, I placed them all aside and just left them there alone stacked inconspicuously upon a coffee table. After Tal had arrived at the party and finally noticed them (!) (which was all part of my devious *master* plan... ~lol~), and he was pondering with his head tilted to read all the titles... Then quickly I seized my one and only chance and went over to him immediately and spoke, <"Misha, would you be so kind and sign any one my chess books of your choice?"> He then thought about it for just a few brief seconds and said right back to me, <"Alan, I'm responsible for writing only *TWO* of those chess books!"> ~lol~ Quickly I then removed those two books from the towering stack: "Tal-Botvinnik WCC 1960" (H. Russell, First Edition), and his "The Life & Games of Mikhail Tal" (RHM Press, First Edition). Then he personally inscribed them (after checking the correct spelling of my first name), to me right there on the spot. Those two Chess books I'm keeping forever... This so that I can always remember that "once upon a time" I had a great chess library. ;-) "The Life and Games of Mikhail Tal" (images):

Hope that quenched your wanton thirst and that you enjoyed the story! :^) All the Best, Your pal, - Mal
PS: I'll be revising my original article, "A Night of Blitz Magic!" soon... ;) This was printed in "Blitz Chess" which was published and edited by my old Chess friend GM Walter S. Browne. It's an account of the WBCA Blitz Championship which took place at the Mechanics' Institute Chess Room on March 15th, 1991. It was truly a real joy and such a pure pleasure to not only watch Tal in action, but also to record all of his Blitz games for prosperity (Don't think I've ever written so fast! ~lol~). Make no doubt about it he ain't nicknamed the "Magician from Riga" for nothing'. <SUPER GM grin ensues> Oh, the many cherished Chess memories of Mal's... :^) |

That affair ultimately ended up with the administrators dropping a nuclear bomb in your forum.> There was a nuke set off and I missed it?! No wonder I'm irritated, I've been collecting analysis for the lazy lowlifes instead of fulfilling my responsibilities as a Dutch civil servant (currently on assignment abroad using a Green Mountain Mann cover) instead of taunting anyone silly enough to comment. No nukes yet, but I think the day after the national holiday might bring what's coming to me. On the other hand, The Powers That Be might be too confused to realize I painted their red button cerulean. And why, of the friends who quoted my fond farewell to foolishness, did all drop the critical adjective "oxymoronic" (which I now include in everyday conversation)? I think it's one of the most colorful words in the English language.... I think we need to flash-mob the wine-and-cheese crowd at Asparagus-Ham with wanker-and-peas at the opening ceremony. I'm up for producing the most absurd statistics as the play-by-play unfolds, having watched four decades of baseball ("he's hitting .426 against southpaws with runners on first and third and one out since completing parole, but that drops to .393 in day games"). Then maybe we can blackmail CG into fixing the brain-dead move validation protocol and middle-school UI in exchange for our sycophancy. |

| Oct-13-08 | | just a kid: I don't have a computer program so can anybody put this position in their computer. click for larger viewWhat is the best move for White in this position? What does it think of c3?What is the evaluation after 1.c3 dxc3 2.Rac1 Rhe8? Please and thank you. |
|
| Oct-13-08 | | WBP: <Just a Kid> I don't have a computer, but how about 1 b4? If black decides to keep the queen on the a3-f8 diagnal, to prevent the knight fork at d6, it seems he gets into trouble, e.g. 1...Qxb4 2 Qxb6, and now white threatens both mate at c7 and a win of the queen with the discoverd check. Black must therefore give up the exchange by 2...Qe7 3 Nd6+. Or if 1...Qe7 or 1...Qf8, white continues with 2 Qxb6,a nd has a winning seems to have a winning position. The best move for black appears to be 1...Qc6, which costs a pawn after 2 Nxd4. Somewhere in teh idst of this Black might be able to eventually trap the queen with Ra8 (obviously after the king is moved off the seventh rank), but that looks like an awfully complex maneuver that white can probably avoid. Note that I am working from the diagram here--could be way off. Hi <Jess>! Hope you're well. I am going to try to look in a little on the big match! <Niels> I am out of time--I'll post the rest of that game very soon! |

|
| Oct-13-08 | | hms123: <just a kid> <WBP> got you off to a good start. A quick run on Fritz shows that pushing the <a-pawn> gives some interesting possibilities. You should try this line click for larger view<1. b4 Qc6 2. f3 Rf4 3. a5 Qxb5 4. a6 Bc6 5. Re1> click for larger viewand work out the alternative lines on the board. (If 2...R anywhere else then grab the pawn with Nxd4) |
