Oct-22-08  Boomie: <<Peay>

Wouldn't that be pronounced "Peh Ayyy"?

French fellow, was he? >

Austin Peay was the guv of Tennessee in the roaring 20's. He fought so hard to improve education that he died in office from the stress. The college was started in his honor as a teacher's school in Clarksville, which was immortalized by the Monkees when they took the last train there.

Folks in Tennessee pronounce words kinda funny. East Tennessee has my favorite accent. The Southern drawl is so thick the language becomes musical somehow. Maybe that's why this Blue Ridge area is so lousy with bluegrass music, yet another of my guilty pleasures. I'm totally wracked with guilt and pleasure. Clarksville isn't in the East though. It's north of Nashville near the Kentucky border. So they talk without the marbles in their mouths and Peay is pronounced Pee.

Oct-22-08  Red October: Is that anywhar neeyar Greenbow ?
Oct-22-08  Eyal: Fischer seems to be having some problems against the Sicilian in general. Maybe she should follow Anand and switch to 1.d4...(http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...)

Come to think of it, she's not doing so great with Black either (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...)

Oct-22-08  Boomie: <Big Red One: Is that anywhar neeyar Greenbow?>

<Niels> Here is the long-awaited solution. Here's the position (S. Tinsley v W.H.K. Pollock, London, October 18, 1883), to refresh your memory.>

Black to play:

<Bill>

THANK YOU for coming back to this one, and rightly so, cause this position is interesting for a variety of reasons...

1. I was indeed dying to know WHO the opponent was, and how the game was played by <Pollock>... I looked for it in the CG database a few weeks ago but couldn´t find it, not even with the help of the <sacrifice explorer>...'

2. I had found a FORCED move sequence that would lead to a TOTAL COLLAPSE of White´s King position and MATE on White´s back rank

3. The big engines were <not remotely capable> to come up with the PROPER THEMATIC Modus operandus in this position

4. White is completely helpless after 5 moves, PROVIDED the f8/rook is brought in as soon as possible...

This is how I played it:

1. ... Tb8xb3
2. cxb3 Pe5-d3
3. Dg2 Tf8-b8!!

click for larger view

Interesting to note that the SHREDDER ENGINE gives this advantage White - ie 0.40 - at 13 Ply and 2 mins analysis time.

4. Pg1-e2 Pd3-b4+ the thematic and correct course of action

5. Ka2-b1 La6-d3+
6. Kb1-c1 Pb4-c2
7. Pc3-b1 Tb8xb3

And in a higher sense it is all over here already, the Domination of the A3 and ajointed Black squares is devastating and the <subsequent> SECOND ROOK EXCHANGE SAC on the Bishop on B2 <REMOVES THE PRIME/LAST DEFENDER> of those squares:

8. Pe2-f4 (Or Nc3) Tb3xb2!

... and the forced Mate is apparent -- Black has <FIVE pieces> in the attack on the weakened king position, and <White's highest officers> and Queen, Q+R+R, are OUT of the rest of the game!

The possibilities and lines for attack are endless, even with the Black DS Bishop coming to e5 in some lines...

For a trained club player this STUDY should be solved like a Tuesday PUZZLE, but the <shredder> I downloaded here, trial version, hardly has a clue on how utterly hopeless White is.

VERY INSTRUCTIVE REMINDER of the (already discussed at length) - <limitations of the engine>, shredder in this case, in certain positions.... Here we see the SAC of ONE PIECE, Rxb3, freeing the CRUCIAL D3 square for the KNIGHT, with paralysing effect.

<NO ESCAPE> is possible because the D2 PAWN remains <FIXATED> and denies his own R+R+Q access for defensive duties - as well as offensive ones.

CHESS IS MAGICAL

I remember getting this down, once I saw <ALL THE IDEAL SQUARES> FOR Black's Pieces, and the crushing A3 entry square.

Gonna check now if the game is in the CG Dbase...

Oct-23-08  achieve: <Jess> All you have to do now is email Anand or his Asparagusses to remain calm, maybe toss Krammy a bone or two, so he over-stretches, and a +5 historic <DEMOLITION> of the Classical World Chess Champion is pretty much in the bag!

But somehow I think Kramnik will carry even such a loss as a man, albeit as one who will suffer for quite a while, in case that scenario unfolds...

(I just know <Dom> will flinch at the "pretty much" phrase when and if he reads it)

heh

I mean, Anand's technique is just a thing of beauty out there... Wish I could go to BONN just to smell the atmosphere...

Bloody Good Show!

Domdaniel: <Niels> Uh, what's wrong with 'pretty much'? It seems pretty much OK to me.

And a gentleman, Sir, does not 'flinch'. A slight internal tremor is acceptable when one is faced, for example, by a pack of slavering hell-hounds or a grammatical barbarism. But one never lets it show.

Oct-23-08  achieve: <Dom> You, sir, are ever so right. I stand corrected, yet unshaken; slight tremor not to be found in me. I am a gentleman, and my hand-writing is as steady as it's ever been; as is my typing.

Now what were we discussing here...

Ah, yes, Barbarism, in any form, or tense, is indeed a shock to the nervous system, but we "cope." Or is 'endure' the better choice? Oui. Ca c'est dur.

Btw - I was reading some brochures here (in Dutch) on several subjects, and was delighted beyond description when I realized I hadn't encountered A SINGLE spelling mistake or grammatical deformaty, upto that point. Apparently it meant something to me.

But some people tell me my language is ever changing...

BAHA HUMBUG

I *was* however, delighted, when I met "a single." But that's another story, for another time.

Domdaniel: <Niels> The late 19th century - apart from games by stars such as Steinitz - seems to be one of the weak points in the CG database. One consultation game is the only example of a Pollock I could find.

But the Chessbase/Fritz database contains <a load of Pollocks>. About 100 games between 1885 and 1895, against such opponents as Chigorin, Mason and Bird.

Your 1883 game is earlier than any of these. A young Pollock?

He played at tournaments in the USA, England (Hastings 1895) and Ireland. Amusingly, the earliest game in the list is a win against Morphy -- a certain John Morphy who played in the 1885 Irish Chess Association Congress.

I enjoyed this game from the same event, against the wonderfully-named <Porterfield Rynd>, the Irish chess champ of the time.

[Event "Irish CA Congress 1st"]
[Site "Dublin"]
[Date "1885.10.15"]
[Round "?"]
[White "Pollock, William Henry Kraus"]
[Black "Rynd, JA Porterfield"]
[Result "0-1"]
[ECO "A03"]
[PlyCount "74"]
[EventDate "1885.10.03"]
[EventType "tourn"]

1. f4 d5 2. e3 Bf5 3. Bd3 Nh6 4. Nf3 c5 5. O-O Nc6 6. Nc3 g6 7. b3 Bg7 8. Bb2 O-O

[Black's play in the opening is quite 'modern' - fast development and a fianchetto, not trying to take direct advantage of white's dubious 3.Bd3]

9. Qe2 Rc8 10. Rae1 Nb4 11. Bxf5 Nxf5 12. a3 Nxc2 13. Rc1 d4 14. Rxc2 d3 15. Qd1 dxc2 16. Qxc2 c4 17. b4 a6 18. Kh1 b5 19. Rg1 Qd3 20. Qc1 Rfd8 21. g4 Bxc3 22. Bxc3 Qe4 23. gxf5 Qxf3+ 24. Rg2 Rd3 25. fxg6 fxg6 26. Qa1 Kf8 27. Kg1 e6 28. h4 Kf7 29. Kh2 Ke8 30. Bf6 c3 31. Bxc3 Rcxc3 32. dxc3 Qxe3 33. a4 Qxf4+ 34. Kg1 Qxh4 35. axb5 Rh3 36. Kf1 Rh1+ 37. Rg1 Qh2 0-1

[Black got a winning position very nicely, then panicked slightly with 26...Kf8. Instead, 26...Rcd8 would have won quickly, eg 26...Rcd8 27.Bh8 c3 28.Bxc3 Rxd2 29.Bxd2 Rxd2 30.Qg1 Rd1, 0-1. Even so, he found the ...c3 breakthrough when the bishop moved.]

Oct-23-08  achieve: <Dom> Yes, 1883 would make William Henry Krauss 24 in the game there posted by <Bill>, who has access to some fine databases as well... Thanks for nosing around in the late 19th... I had a huge file from Steinitz' simuls in Holland, via DutchBase, very interesting to examine their technique, but they (DutchBase) were off line for a while and the DataBase was not accessible! Hate it when that happens, especially since I lost all those games I stored when I had the Hard-disc meltdown earleir this year...

Ta. And I will have time to play through the game vs Porterfield this week-end, in which I also planned to EMU her Maj and a fella named Howard.

Should be a bloody good show!

Will get back to ya.

Oct-23-08  FroggieFarben: One of the top baseball statisticians takes on election polling coverage and distills it for consumption by amphibians: http://www.fivethirtyeight.com

Gamblers are generally more trustworthy than pollsters:

http://americasline.com/presidentia...

FWIW, the Bradley Effect was minor compared to the NYC election of 1989. Manhattan Borough President Dinkins squeezed out the incumbent Koch for the Democratic nomination (Koch's third term was marred by all manners of trouble, including the suicide of Manes). Koch was expected to run as an independent, but declined to do so. The polls then consistently showed Dinkins running ahead of Giuliani by 10-15%, but Dinkins squeezed out a 1% win. The pollsters blamed New Yorkers' tendency to not like being polled, but given the discomfort who can blame them?

Oddly, the pollsters managed to account for this substantial error four years later, more-or-less correctly predicting the ensuing 1993 race (which was again fairly tight).

Domdaniel: <Niels> Ta. I also had better Emu her maj promptly or she may never speak to me again.

Since that nice Ms Palin from Alaska has been mentioned, I thought I'd throw in a line I saw in a cartoon.

Scene: the Palin household. Sarah P is doing Mom-type housework when a teenage daughter materializes.

Teen: Mom! I'm bored! I wanna go clubbin'!

Sarah P: That's nice, dear. Which is it this time -- moose or baby seals?

Domdaniel: <FroggieFarben> -- <(Koch's third term was marred by all manners of trouble, including the suicide of Manes). >

In ancient Roman myth, the <Manes> were the spirits of the dead.

And Marcus Aurelius advises us to "make a complete exit from life, not in anger, but simply, freely, with integrity, making this leaving of it at least one achievement in your life".

Of course Marcus was both an Emperor and a Stoic, which is nothing at all like being President. If Dubya was a stoic he'd have fallen on his sword years ago.

Oct-23-08  Woody Wood Pusher: LOL <Dom> is that a real cartoon? hehehe

p.s. where has <JFQ> got to? I'm sure she has an opinion on Kramnik's fortress.

Just think, Vishy goes a pawn up only to turn around and see Kramnik's king high up on the battlements of his fortress turn around and pull his trousers down...and no way to get to him.

He must have been loving that.

Oct-23-08  Red October: *General Tsao*
Oct-23-08  Woody Wood Pusher: Hey <elephant>, that is quite some position. I only looked at it briefly and thought 1...Nc4 was winning after 2.bxc4,Bxc4+ but then I remembered white doesn't have to take the knight....oh well!

nice solution.
