 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Tim for a Reality Check> heh- yes, it would be striking that <Palin> has absoultely no redeeming qualities-- if it weren't so banal and pathetic. She's the most disgusting public figure who's not worth three seconds of your life getting riled up about because that would give her too much importance since , well- ok since <Fred Durst>. Meanwhile-
From the <WHO KNEW?> Files-- <David Duchovny> is a really good actor. This was, of course, impossible to discern from his long stint on the <X-Files>, where the script and the direction called for him to behave solely as a <monomaniacal block of wood>. But in the show <Californication>, and, strangely enough, the old serial killer movie <Kalifornia>, he shows that he is a really, really good actor. Even though he looks like <John Ritter>. Thank God for <American Cable TV>. Without it, we would have no edgy shows where everyone smokes (yes! it's cool again!),fornicates, does drugs, and curses like a sailor- Today, all the cool people watch <Weeds, Californication, and Entourage> for these fine qualities. | Nov-11-08 | | madlydeeply: So Jess what do you think of the 2 Na3 sicilian aiming for c3 and Nc2? A flash in the pan? Or the new opening for the Obama era? I tried it a couple times and got very confused. I rather like that knight on c3 after black exchanges c pawns etc. |

| Nov-11-08 | | Woody Wood Pusher: <Eyal> nice puzzle, surprised the tactic was missed though as I got it in under a minute. Was black in time trouble? Who were the players? |

| Nov-12-08 | | Eyal: <Woody> As I mentioned, it's from a blitz tournament, so there was time trouble by definition... The players are Amin-Tkachiev. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hi <kraba> It took me a lot longer than a minute to get it but I think I have it. Black has to deliver a check--
so
g5+ and White has to caputre with pawn, forced. If King captures then Queen just slides over and mate in three. The really hard part for me was where to continue since White has a mate in one. So the next move, which took a whole day of thinking instead of teaching, has to be an <INTERFERENCE> tactic-- Viz.
Bb7!!!
Blocking the mate in one- forcing White to play suicide chess or resign. Viz--
Rxh7+ is forced and when White Queen takes Bishop then the Black rook can defend the 7th rank and White must suicide his Queen or it's mate. The brilliance of the <Bb7!> is that it does two things at once-- it <INTERFERES> with White's mate in one, and it <VACATES> the crucial <e4> square for the Black Rook to deliver check on the White King. In any variation after <g5+>, White is mated or loses his Queen. <Woody>--
I find your "I found it in under a minute" to be impressive. However, I find your "surprised the tactic was missed" a little odd. Don't you know the HUUUUUUUUUUGE difference between KNOWING AHEAD OF TIME THERE IS A FORCING SEQUENCE TO A WIN, and HAVING THE PATTERN RECOGNITION SKILLS TO SEE SUCH FORCING SEQUENCES when you DON'T KNOW there is one there for sure? I'd be impressed if I saw you find such a resource in a Classical game against one of these GM monsters, let alone a Blitz game. On the other hand, <Drawnik> lost. heh.
I noticed on some <deep background> search that you've been slamming <Drawnik> ever since he beat <Kasparov>. You were proven right, in my opinion.

I trust all is well-- I miss your <chess analysis friendly love elephant> presence at CG.com more than I could have thought possible, but <NIELS WELL BEING AND HAPPYNESS> comes first in my book.... Hoping to see you more regularly nonetheless.
Mrs. almost blew a gasket thinking about this dam puzzle all day at work surrounded by shrieking Korean kids. Heh-
However, tomorrow is <HAPPY EXTRA KOREAN HOLIDAY > DAY again... Chess for me- no work.
"Asian work ethic?"
Give me a break.
I haven't worked a full 40 hour work week in two years here. Thanks to the 399999999999999 holidays they have in this place. heh |

| Nov-12-08 | | Eyal: <Jess> Yeah, Bb7 is the <KEY> move (btw, it creates two lethal threats - clearing the 4th rank for a rook check on d4, and the e4 square for a queen check; you said it vacates e4 for the rook, so I'm not sure which of them you meant). The position came up in B Amin vs Tkachiev, 2008, and Black indeed suffered from the problem of not having anyone around to tell him it's a puzzle... (though considering the miserable position of White's king, it's certainly natural to try hard making g5+ work). |

| Nov-12-08 | | achieve: Hi <Jess>! -- thanks for your kind words, as always, and I realised I missed you too, at a certain point; I even mentioned it in my 'diary', I kept each day, heh... ...and "as usual," I agree with your assessment of the difficulty of the tactic with the different situations as you described them. Very good to see us both in a good mood, and a perfect opportunity for me to bring you upto speed with recent developments here -- IE a GIANT BUMMED MULE may be expected in your nest soon. I made some huge strides and would love to tell you about them. If Woody saw it within a minute, he's a freaking chess monster, or just very clear minded. I DID notice the other day that I was pretty quick with the correct patf for a Sunday Puzzle (I think it featured former Dutch Protege <Jeroen Piket>, with the white pieces...) |

| Nov-12-08 | | Woody Wood Pusher: <JFQ><<Woody>-- I find your "I found it in under a minute" to be impressive. However, I find your "surprised the tactic was missed" a little odd. Don't you know the HUUUUUUUUUUGE difference between KNOWING AHEAD OF TIME THERE IS A FORCING SEQUENCE TO A WIN, and HAVING THE PATTERN RECOGNITION SKILLS TO SEE SUCH FORCING SEQUENCES when you DON'T KNOW there is one there for sure?> Thanks. I think.
LOL
Yes I am aware of the differences in looking at a puzzle position and finding the moves in a real game. I was only a little surprised the tactic was not found, I wasn't <shocked> or <flabbergasted> that it was missed because of the <huge> differences you rightly point out. I agree that knowing when a position is worth a more detailed tactical inspection during a game takes great skill and a finely tuned <pattern recognition> ability. It was only because this position set so many alarm bells ringing in my mind so quickly, with my <weak pattern recognition> skills that I was just a bit surprised it was not seen in the game by a GM who has spent 100 times the time I have studying chess. Bb7 is one of those moves you have either seen before a lot, or else it will take EONS to come up with by yourself. I would probably not have got it in a whole week without recognising it straightaway, so I take my hat off to you for finding it with your own brain power! Now you have, the next time the possibility is 'on' you will no doubt have it jump out at you as well. I was not trying to disrespect the players or anybody else, I happened to get it quickly, was pleased, and posted my initial thoughts. A combo that starts with check and is mainly seen through experience is just GM bread and butter IMO. That is why I asked if black was in any time trouble. <Eyal> says blitz is time trouble by definition and I agree. Maybe I should have asked what strain of time trouble black had, like a tropical virus which is always nasty, you will get ill but whether your head turns black, shrivels up and falls off or not depends on the strain. <I'd be impressed if I saw you find such a resource in a Classical game against one of these GM monsters, let alone a Blitz game.> If the resource was there, on the board, waiting to be played, I don't really see the difference between playing against an amateur or Anatoly Karpov himself. What would be really mind-blowing of course is to reach a position where it was available in such a game. But I'm pretty sure there isn't enough orange-juice in the world to make that even a possibility for me. |

| Nov-12-08 | | hms123: <jess> I found it in under a minute too--of course, that was right after reading your posted solution. It is amazing how easy these tactical puzzles are if 1) you know that it's a puzzle, and 2) you know the solution. I remain,
