I am useless with the <search kibbutz> function..

Where is <Eyal> when you need him!!

Nov-14-08  achieve: Yep Mal, Jess referred to a thread from over 3 weeks ago, but Jess and I immediately knew what we meant, so that was indeed confusing.

BUT FUN! ;)

Speaking of... Jess, I'll write you a bit later, coz it takes some time to put it comprehensively in an emu-- it's "in the pipeline" but the fun here had me engaged...

AWHOOGA!

Nov-14-08  malthrope: Hehehe... Yep! Well I better reboot and take a short nap before Round #2 starts in Dresden! ;)

Awhackaa

Nov-14-08  Woody Wood Pusher: <JFQ> <malthrope> Thanks for looking at my 'puzzle'.

I played 1.Nf3 and awaited the resignation but my stubborn little opponent played on with 1..Rg8 because I was quite low on time and he was hoping to get lucky.

But after 2.Nxg5,hxg5 3.Rh3+,Bxh3 4.Qxh3 mate he finally had to concede.

You are right that 1.Ne6! can also be played with much the same result, but I didn't see this until I looked at the position afterwards.

As for <Eyal>'s position, I also thought Ng5 at first until I saw black's LSB can ruin the party. Probably without the clue 'elegant' I would not have seen it at all.

Nov-14-08  malthrope: <Woody Wood Pusher: <JFQ> <malthrope> Thanks for looking at my 'puzzle'.>

You're welcome Woody. :) As I'm sure Jess would say, "It was our pleasure." ...followed by something witty added that only she can do! ;)

Hope you had fun with the madhouse that occurred here last night with <Eyal>'s stumper... I overstepped on the 'elegance' a wee bit but all same gained insight to this specific type of combination and the necessary mechanics needed to make my 'elegant' solution line work! The K on b1, a1 or a2 for example (avoiding the check on the c1-h6 diagonal) or no 'f-pawn!' (which allows the key defense gxf2!). ~lol~ Then it's a different ballgame! ;) The move Qh4 as a defense was of course silly, but I was simply trying to point out that the 'elegance' was gone... Where is the elegance? :))

We are, after all, just students of the Royal game. <grin>

Nov-14-08  achieve: <Mal> I actually agree with you regarding 'elegance' -- though the coming to life of the h1-rook through the R-g3 sac was a lovely motif, but in a nagging way refuted by the ...Q-h4 g3xh4 -- and as a composer of elegant studies, your nature is to give it a elegant finish as well, with the king placed off that diagonal; which makes it very tempting to adjust the actual game position, in order to "perfect" the puzzle.

<Funny thing> - but a concept also well known in music, where many big selling pop classics' themes have just been largely copied from e.g. a Chopin Prelude... but in the hands of a talented musician, the beautiful motif can be dressed up in a way that one hardly remembers that the original idea was conceived 200 years (or more) earlier... In the end J.S. Bach seems the source of ALL musical progressions, and he was partly influenced by Palestrina, Buxtehude, Sweelinck and ... ;))

That's why they invented copyright!

Am I drifting? Yeah, we just had a ball with a nifty puzzle yesterday!

Nov-14-08  achieve: <MAL's RE-ARRANGEMENT OF THE PUZZLE>

A) With the White King on <A-1>

(Mate in 6)

B) With the F-pawn missing for White

Where we indeed see the clever motif again, but after Black returning some material, White needs about <10> EXTRA moves (<FORCED SEQUENCE>), in order to take another Piece off Black...

1. Qg6+ Kh8
2. Rg3 fxg3
3. Nh3-g5(!) Qd8xg5+
4. Qg6xg5 Rf8-f7
5. h2xg3+ Bc8-h3
6. Rh1xh3+ Rf7-h7

...and here an instructive King Chase starts, and is needed, to <FLOOR> Black FOR GOOD

7. Qg5-f6+ Kh8-g8
8. Qf6-g6+ Rh7-g7
9. Qg6-e6+ Rg7-f7
10. Qe6-h6 Rf7-f1+
11. Kc1-b2 Kg8-f7
12. Qh6-d6 Ra8-g8
13. Rh3-h7+ Rg8-g7
14. Qd6-d7+ Nc6-e7

(White to play)

... and <BINGO>!!!

(finally...)

The entire sequence is FORCED! (I think...)
