| Dec-01-08 | | Woody Wood Pusher: <hms> only one out of three for me. Guess I need to work on my creepiness.... |
|
| Dec-01-08 | | hms123: <woody> Don't feel bad. Not even GM analysts saw the Spassky move, and Smyslov missed his as well against Petrosian. I would say 1 for 3 is pretty darn good. |
|
| Dec-01-08 | | Woody Wood Pusher: hahaha Thanks!
I knew it was time to be <creepy> though, whereas they had to see for themselves it was time to get out the false fangs, rubber spiders and silly-string! |
|
| Dec-01-08 | | Woody Wood Pusher: <elephant>< but really, I feel I can take on anyone from those (late middlegame) positions.> Really?
I mean REALLY?
ANYONE!?
I like self belief, but I wouldn't make that bet even after 6 pints of special strength cider. But after 7 pints, well, who knows! |
|
| Dec-01-08 | | achieve: <The Woods>: <Really? I mean REALLY?> Hey!
Everyone has a right to their own opinion, and stuff... Get it??
I tell you man, confidence is the name of the game!
And study hard, of course.
Pour me an eighth, please?

| Dec-01-08 | | achieve: <Guess I need to work on my creepiness....> REALLY?
I mean ...
Kidding aside: lotsa respect for the way you guide the team(s) ... I have some busy days ahead, but try and catch up some early mornings and some times in the evening here. (CET) |

| Dec-01-08 | | Woody Wood Pusher: <elephant><Everyone has a right to their own opinion, and stuff...> Naturally. It seems that we have different tendencies perhaps though. <And study hard, of course.> I always found the more I studied, the more certain I have become that players like Karpov would be able to just grind me down from even the most dead drawn positions. I mean, his endgames create pressure out of almost nowhere. And one mistake...over! And not just a super-GM either.
I wouldn't fancy my chances against even a lowly GM to hold a drawn position. No, I have become less confidant in this respect with study. And as for looking at what it takes at GM level to even convert a medium advantage...mind boggling! Just when you think they are finished, they seem to set one last problem... hehe
Respect to anybody that fancies their chances in any of these positions. |
|
| Dec-01-08 | | achieve: <Naturally. It seems that we have different tendencies perhaps though.> Nah - too early to tell at this point ;) <Woody> I only played hundreds of strong level Human to human games, and studied at a serious level, with a pal o mine in college, who was then 2100 rated, but he was mostly studying hard on Chemistry at the time, and we exchanged books, studied a lot of endgames and openings... Yeah - in large part I was speculating, but give me a late middle game and I might coincidentally show a bit of technique, though not at Master level. |

| Dec-01-08 | | Woody Wood Pusher: <Yeah - in large part I was speculating, but give me a late middle game and I might coincidentally show a bit of technique, though not at Master level.> Funny thing about chess is, it is full of examples of massive under-dogs coming out better one game. Even the BEST slip up some times, and even Joe Average can make a few killer moves <albeit probably for the wrong reasons!>. The hard thing is the consistency, and that is what a lot of people don't understand when they flag up games saying <oooh Fischer lost to a nobody> or <Karpov blundered a piece on move 10> or whatever. Either way, when we reach the late middle-game I sure we will be glad to have you on <our> team! Oh yes, check out the opening of the day, you might like it ;-) |
|
| Dec-01-08 | | achieve: <The hard thing is the consistency, and that is what a lot of people don't understand when they flag up games> Spot on - that's where I totally agree with you and can testify on many counts top level competition, both actively as a player, as well as when a coach/trainer for talented youngsters... Little people understand the subtleties and details that decide games on a competitve level, even though there may be a huge rating gap... Check even Federer at his peak, getting through the first round in the 3rd set tie break in many tournaments, and then wiping off a Roddick in the final, when he happened to be in the zone... but of course his standard level was very high, though unlike Lendl, who had no sub par performances most of the time, but failed to produce the highs like Federer did when he ruled the game... Fascinating subject from all angles, and still acres of ground to be gained, still, at many top level sports. |

| Dec-01-08 | | achieve: <Oh yes, check out the opening of the day, you might like it ;-)> heh! Well spotted!
My kind of opening treatment, heh.

| Dec-01-08 | | Woody Wood Pusher: I don't really follow tennis TBH <elephant>, but I do follow snooker and poker. And consistency at poker is probably THE most important trait in a player, but less to do with specific decisions (a touch of absolute randomness is good there!) than emotional bearing during a game. What really impresses me about the pro's is when they make a great call, get sucked out on and then continue to play like nothing ever happened. That takes real guts and practice IMO. |

The things in his Profile are EXACTLY the kind of thing that makes the website worthwhile to begin with. BTW, what's a "bit"?
