Dec-16-08  hms123: <woody> In this position (after <31….Qe3>

Fritz at first liked <32.Bg2> better than <32.Rh2> but after I ran out this line: <32.Bg2 Rg8 33.d6>

<33… Rd8 34.Bc6 Qd3+ 35.Qc2 Qe3 36. Rd1 Qxe5>

and the evaluation suddenly switched to Black’s favor, Fritz changed its mind and decided that <32.Rh2> was better after all.

<32.Rh2 Qe1+ 33.Qc1 Qxe5 34. Rf2 Qg3 35.Qb2 Rg8>

Dec-16-08  Woody Wood Pusher: <<33 Rd8 34.Bc6 Qd3+ 35.Qc2 Qe3 36. Rd1 Qxe5>>

Nice work <hms>!

This proves there would be a lot of life in the position if black felt like a gamble.

I agree black certainly has the advantage in this line but since the white pawn can make it to d7 it is difficult to assess without a really close look.

Dec-16-08  hms123: <woody> Actually, this has been very interesting; e.g., what's the point of <Nf2>? In some lines, <Nd3> gets the knight to the Q-side in a hurry.

I will have to look later at whether the evals turn again. I am running something for the GMAN2 game at the moment.

Dec-16-08  Woody Wood Pusher: <<32.Rh2 Qe1+ 33.Qc1 Qxe5 34. Rf2 Qg3 35.Qb2 Rg8>>

32.Rh2 does seem better for white and he is on the verge of complete coordination in the end diagram.

36.Nf4 and then what for black? I would probably have no time left here and just play 36...Qxh4?? haha

But seriously, 36..Rc8 doesn't seem to leave black much against 37.Bh3 or just 37.h5.

36...Re8 might be all he has left here, I don't know, get some pawns for the piece and just see what happens.

Very interesting.

Dec-16-08  Woody Wood Pusher: <what's the point of <Nf2>? In some lines, <Nd3> gets the knight to the Q-side in a hurry.>

Yea, that would seem logical. But the knight is severely limited anyway on h3 so probably Nf2 is as good as anything else in the drive to activate ASAP.

The more I think about that 32.Rh2 sequence the more I like it.

Plus it gave me flashbacks to this:

Kramnik vs Anand, 2008

Which I really really like!

hehe

Dec-16-08  Open Defence: <hms123> does Fritz find 18...b5 ? I dont think the engines find this as a top choice at all, Rybka, Zappa and HIARCS dont
Dec-16-08  Woody Wood Pusher: hey <OD> did you beat your opponent into a bloody pulp?

Are you actually typing from a holiday resort in Hawaii?

Can you post the game, I would love to see it!

Dec-16-08  Open Defence: <Woody> the game was postponed to tomorrow (since the carroms events overshot the time) so she gets another lease of life hehehehe
Dec-16-08  Woody Wood Pusher: < Open Defence: <hms123> does Fritz find 18...b5 ? I dont think the engines find this as a top choice at all, Rybka, Zappa and HIARCS dont>

I doubt it. That is a very human move indeed. The computer is looking at the other side of the board entirely!

But we may be surprised, <hms>'s Fritz has come up with some good moves tonight already...

Dec-16-08  Open Defence: btw those lyrics <1979> was a re-write of the Prince song <1999>
Dec-16-08  Woody Wood Pusher: <OD> A rewrite of a Price song?

Well I wouldn't have known in a million years since I only listen to Classic Rock, and only then when I'm driving or completely wasted. (yes the <or> is very important there)

hehe

Dec-16-08  Woody Wood Pusher: Hey <OD> what does Rybka prefer on move 18...?

or have I missed it in the previous posts...

Dec-16-08  hms123: <OD> <woody> I just started Fritz looking for <b5>. We shall see. (it should be about 10 pm GMT right now.)
Dec-16-08  hms123: <woody> <OD> At 17-ply <b5> was well in the lead. Fritz also gives the game line through <20.Nc3>.

I just started on 18-ply and <Nb6> took over with <b5> in second but trailing by almost half a pawn.

More later.

Dec-16-08  Woody Wood Pusher: hey <hms>

I'd be amazed if it wanted to start a speculative expansion on the QS before swapping the pawn and booting the knight on the KS.

Dec-16-08  Woody Wood Pusher: hahaha

We posted at the same time!

Should I take this chance to erase the evidence?

Nah,

I had a light lunch so I will fill up here by eating my own words.

hehe

They say the new Fritzy does play more human and maybe here is the proof!

Dec-16-08  Woody Wood Pusher: So 18...Nb6 is preferred over 18..fxg4 then?

Since when does Fritz play positionally?

hahaha

Dec-16-08  hms123: <woody> Here's what I have at 18-ply (19 on Nb6>:

Analysis by Fritz 10:

1. = (0.02): 18...Nb6 19.Qc2 fxg4 20.Nf2 e3 21.Ne4 Bg7 22.Rd3 0-0 23.Rxe3 Re8 24.Ra3 Qe7 25.Bg2 Qxe4 26.Bxe4

2. (0.49): 18...b5 19.gxf5 Nb6 20.Nc3 Bd4 21.f6 e3 22.Re1 Qxf6 23.Rxe3+ Bxe3

3. (0.70): 18...fxg4 19.Nf2 Nb6 20.Nc3 Bd4 21.Nfxe4 f5 22.Ng3 0-0 23.Bd3 Bd7 24.Kb1 Qe7 25.Rde1 Qf6 26.Qc2

Dec-16-08  hms123: <woody> I can't imagine that any human would play <Nb6> in this situation. It blocks the <b-pawn> for one thing. I need to look at the whole line to see what's going on.
Dec-16-08  Woody Wood Pusher: Thanks <hms>!

A cross section of an opponents brain is always interesting!

Looks like they have been making improvements then maybe...

Dec-16-08  hms123: <woody> I am not so sure--if you play out the <Nb6> line (on a wooden board!) you get a very strange position in which Black gives up the Queen for some odd reason.

I need to slide forward and find out what is really going on here.

Dec-16-08  Woody Wood Pusher: < hms123: <woody> I can't imagine that any human would play <Nb6> in this situation. It blocks the <b-pawn> for one thing.>

Yea its an ugly baby that one, I really only thought the choice was fxg4 and b5.

I guess instead of worrying about the pawns mobility like a man would Fritz just 'sees' exactly what is going on so there is no hidden danger for it to care about.

Dec-16-08  Woody Wood Pusher: <= (0.02): 18...Nb6 19.Qc2 fxg4 20.Nf2 e3 21.Ne4 Bg7 22.Rd3 0-0 23.Rxe3 Re8 24.Ra3 Qe7 25.Bg2 Qxe4 26.Bxe4>

Good point <hms>...

I've never seen anything quite like that before, I mean improvements can usually be made towards the end of the computer line but you are right...

it just throws the Queen??

25..f5 has to be better than 25...Qxe4??

Dec-16-08  hms123: <w> <24....Bd7 25.Bg2 f5 26. N4g3> Now guess what Fritz likes at the moment--if you get it I will be very impressed and will want to check your DNA to see if you are human.
Dec-16-08  hms123: <w> here's the position black to move:
