Jan-31-09  hms123: <niels> There certainly seem to be a lot of re-makes. It may be that the remake of a classic story is seen differently in a new era. The older versions were set in a time where morality was more clear, while the newer versions are seen against a backdrop of relativism.

It may also be that the old Westerns do provide good guys and bad guys, but that the modern era makes that distinction less clear. People may be looking for clarity.

How is the music coming?

Jan-31-09  achieve: Good points - I think I see what you mean - but OK let me be blunt, <howard>, in that I think there's just an element of laziness there with the producers, in the sense that there is a hurry to make a buck as quickly as possible.

This also relates to the time we live in, consumism, and the vast multiple neo- and retro- movements.

It's all in the mix, and I do not have my finger behind it.

Tarantino was a creative writer.

Of course the major influences on artists are through cross pollination from in- and outside their field(s). But it's more <vertical> now, time-wise...

So maybe, after all, there is nothing new under the sun.

The music is coming great; I started arranging little vocal arrangements on Cole Porter's <Love For Sale> - and I think they are quite spicy... Yes, I used a few instrumental solos from past masters as inspiration, so there...

I hope the girls like some of it and that we may implement it in the song.

THAT WOULD BE COOL!!

Jan-31-09  Woody Wood Pusher: <elephant><hms>

Interesting points you have both made. I would just add that I think one of the main problems is the sheer amount of money needed to make a movie nowadays. If it costs $300 million to make, then producers are going to want to stick to the tried and tested stuff anyway, because a flop is too damaging.

Jan-31-09  hms123: <woody> the movies only cost so much to make because the studios are afraid to take a chance on unknown actors/writeres/etc. It is intersting that many hits are small films.

<niels> One of favorite "cult" movies is <The Warriors> (1979). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wa...(film)

It is a re-make of an ancient Greek story by Xenophon. The characters in the movie have names like Cyrus, Ajax, and Cleon. As you said, nothing new under the sun.

Yea the overpaid stars are definitely a problem. But the cost of special effects is another one, and the bar has been raised so high in general that a lackluster attempt in this area is just going to be doomed to failure.

Mind you, despite how everybody swears by CGI nowadays, I still like the animatronics and models like in Carpenter's <The Thing>, which has yet to be beaten for realism in some scenes IMO.

Jan-31-09  Boomie: There does seem to be a paucity of original stories as the good Heffalump mentioned. Aside from greed, perhaps we are running out of stories. How many ways can there be to look at human nature? The writers are if anything better technically than, say the 1930's. But they had a new toy to play with back then - sound. Today there are no comparable new territories for writers.

As for budget, this gem was shot for $183,000 in 1962 and is still one of the finest independent films ever: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_... I would rank it high on any list of films. The Blair Witch Project is a recent example of what determined film makers can accomplish on a wing and a prayer.

Feb-01-09  Boomie: <<BREAKING NEWS>>

This just in...

House MD is moonlighting as the face of MI-6 on MI-5. His poncy pommy accent is worth the price. MI-5 is a good spook show although I prefer a litle humor, or in this case humour, with my mayhem.

Feb-01-09  Travis Bickle: Lady Jessica I am going to send you a prose I wrote awhile back. I'd like you to read it and tell me what you think of it. I'll send it to your email. Your friend, Travis
Feb-01-09  fich: Good evening <JFQ>!

I have read somewhere here that you knew a lot about music. Can I ask about a certain song?

Feb-01-09  ChessMasta2000: I cant look thru all this, if you replied, send link, Morphy rules, fischer wanted him honored with stamp, but what would it take for low us gov to do it?!

jessicafischerqueen: <fich> of course you can ask a question.

I notice that you always ask permission to ask questions?

You officially can ask as many questions as you like here without asking for permission.

The answers will probably be incorrect, however.

I agree- America doesn't care about chess, and they don't even know or care who <Paul Morphy> was.

It's ridiculous that <Morphy> doesn't get serious consideration to be on a stamp.

They will probably give a stamp to <Snoopy> or <Paris Hilton> first.

Feb-02-09  Open Defence: btw I am playing in the Canadian Open Ladies Corresspondence Championship and I am not even from Canada
Feb-02-09  Travis Bickle: Hi Jessica, Im glad you liked my prose. Maybe I'll send another along in the future. I think I was heavily influenced by Jim Morrison's style of poetry, 'An American Prayer' is one he did. I write with the words flowing from my head and with a gut feeling, so I dont think I could tame the wild beast lol and put them in poetry form. Thanks again Jess. Travis ; )
Feb-02-09  Ragh: <Jess> Talking about the TV shows, why don't you just visit the show's official site for watching the full episodes, instead of relying on those suspicious free video servers.

All the shows are archived on that particular show's official website itself. Just look at these for example.

jessicafischerqueen: Thanks for the tip <Ragh>!

Unfortunately, the archives from the official websites usually don't extend back to the start of the series.

Also, many of the best shows are on cable networks that don't offer their shows on free internet video, like HBO for example.

However, this is the kind of investigative work that has earned you the title of <best detective> in addition to all of the <prediction trophies> you just won.

Congratulations!!

Who would have thought that a <1960s sex symbol> would prove to be so good at predicting chess games?

Feb-02-09  fich: Good evening <JFQ>.

<I notice that you always ask permission to ask questions?

I do that as a gesture of respect. I learned that since childhood. Anyway, do you know the title of the song and the artist that goes...

Nineteen, six, two, eight, love me it's too late. You are the greatest lover of my life...

Feb-02-09  Woody Wood Pusher: <Fich> those lyrics ring a bell, it is a song by an 80's group called Europe, titled Six Two Eight.

And it makes a pretty good ring tone too...

jessicafischerqueen: Ha! <wood> comes through with the answer...

<fich> you do know that you could have just typed that line into Google and it would have given you the answer eh?

I respect you for not doing that.

It's tons more fun to ask friends, because they might be wrong, which could lead to an interesting debate.

Example: "<Woody>! That's wrong. Those are in fact lyrics from a lost Beatles song that I inherited because I'm actually heir to the throne of England."

We should never let facts get in the way of our search for the truth.

Feb-02-09  fich: Hello again <WWP>.
Woh, thank you! I've been looking for the song's lyrics for a long time. I didn't find it in the Internet because I don't know the exact title. It's from Europe alright but this is not the same Europe that sang "Carrie" and "Final Countdown",no?

I grew up in the 80s era. My musical influences---the ones I listened to when I was very young---are Depeche Mode,A Flock of Seagulls,Rick Astley, Def Leppard, Roxette, Heart. I dig New Wave back then, also.
