If I have known the title, I would Google it. That's why I asked.

HAHA

Feb-02-09  fich: Lol! Because of Human League, I learned More Human than Human. :)

Know what's funny? I'm cheering my self up after a terrible tragedy just 4 hours ago. Head over please to <positionalgenius'> forum. There, I have the bad news.

So his computer has succeeded in refuting d5 as a reply for Black. Maybe he should get an honorary GM title for this profound contribution to chess knowledge.

The Umansky game is giving me deja vu already.

heh

Ok my Chinese New Year's resolution was to stop publicly ranting about chess engine use, because

A: it was starting to annoy great numbers of quite reasonable and nice people

B: I don't actually know anything about chess engines

C: I use my chess engine every day to help me understand moves in GM games--although many times it's not much help- I need a GM to halp me learn i think.

D: I think some of these people might be kidding?

IE- in the post you quoted- the guy is either kidding or he's retarded.

Either way, of course, it's pretty funny if you ask me.

jessicafischerqueen: <chancho> good luck finding that movie. I don't think it's the kind of thing that's available on torrents or in video stores.

e-bay or Amazon might have a copy?

As I said, I saw it in a university repetory cinema, which specialized in bringing in interesting and totally obscure films.

Feb-03-09  achieve: Hi <Jess> - good to hear from you the other day!

You hit the nail on the head; I am engaged in some very healthy activities, potentially, and most important, it's a lot of fun, and I met a few great girls (read women) - who share my enthusiasm in singing together and trying out several arrangements, I found out last night. I had to of course be careful not to step on the toes of our "course teacher" - (it's all about social skills, and how you "present" your ideas) - but it fell in fertile ground, and we exchanged a few email addresses, so we can get together at my place for extra practise and trying out stuff.

MEANING: My place needs to be more than PASSABLE!!

Can't be bad!!

Also - I am involved in 2 other courses the next few months.

Ok hang in there in far away Korea- I'll get back to you by emu this week, promise.

Feb-03-09  hms123: <jess> I don't believe that I will take an active role (other than paying attention and voting until it gets too crazy) in the <Ulan Bator> game. I do have a commitment to step in and help occasionally with the forums (locum tenens) due to vacations or illnesses, but that's pretty much it.

This should leave me more time for "real chess". I think that the game we have going on at <woody's> has the right mix for me. The level of play is high, <mal> is a great coach, and no one is posting insane computer lines.

Even the Team game that Deffi and I are playing in has a bit too much reliance on computers with too few actually thinking aobut wht is going on before they vote. I don't mind poor thinking, it is the not thinking that gets me. Nonetheless, there is a cohort of people who would be good to have in our game. That's good.

  jessicafischerqueen: heh <hms123: A Helping People Odyssey>

<cohort of people>?

Meaning you are either a <Social Scientist> or a <Roman Centurion>, I'm guessing?

HAHAHAAHAHA

Actually your help to these efforts is very kind and many turn to you for support- I believe because you are regarded to be "sane" and "level headed" despite your penchant for ecouraging the most outrageously silly people to post at your forum.

I was a bit saddened to see the latest plea at your house- re <jepflast>, who has done tons of work obviously in these projects- his move tree link is down as you know but he hasn't actually posted at the <GRUMMAN HELLCAT II> game for over 200 pages.

Also, I noticed that most of the active and feisty regulars have already turned their main efforts to the <Ulan Bator> game--

Including <Dan Langlois>, who appears to have had a personality transplant.

For the better.

I also found <YouRang's> last post at the <GRUMMAN HELLCAT II> game a bit saddening.

He is so good spirited and always trying to make these games enjoyable and human- and he sounds like someone on the deck of a sinking ship.

22 percent of the move entries for that game are currently appended with <draw requests>.

Main chess lesson for me from the <GRUMMAN HELLCAT> rematch is just how funny an equal chess position can look after so many moves.

The pieces look uncoordinated to the "eye" at first glance- but they arent'.

This truly weired placement of black and white pieces is solid- pieces are all defended, no way to press ahead, key squares are all covered...

Maybe this is something valuable Rybka has shown us in this particular <non chess> game.

It's not what the pieces "look like" they can do, it's what they actually <can> do that counts.

The computers think outside the box because they don't think at all.

Could be a big advantage in many respects.

Yes, <Mal's> anaylsis posts are always understandable even when he tackles very difficult ideas.

I agree he is a super top rate chess coach.

It would be a dream to have <Mal> as a chess coach who I got to take lessons with.

  jessicafischerqueen: <Howardo- Cuban Chess Prodigy>

Oh also I forgot.

I think they should not start one of these team <Centaur v. GM> games until the last one is finished first.

Feb-03-09  hms123: <jess> The starting point for the Ulan Bator game was apparently determined by geological forces beyond anyone's control. I agree that it has taken the steam out of the <nickle back> game.

I also agree that the position on the board says something about what we can learn from the machines. As I posted months ago, John Watson writes about this in his strategy discussions. Our goal is to extact some insights/rules that we can write down and use as shortcuts to calculations that we can't begin to do ourselves.

As for whatever little bit of sanity I have left, it does come in handy. A sense of humor also helps.

Thanks--hms

  jessicafischerqueen: I suspected as much.

I've long thought you were in reality <Lucius Verenus>, the exceedingly manly, albeit fictional, hero of the fine HBO miniseries <Rome>.

  jessicafischerqueen: slightly on-topic Academic Inquiry.

In an experiment, if you divide a given <cohort>, do you call the divided segments <maniples>?

HHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAAH

Mrs. Made Some Extra Money Once in Montreal as a Drug Guinea Pig but I didn't Take the Drugs and I Probably wrecked the Whole Study and Possibly Killed People.

Actually, that's not very funny. I feel guilty about not taking the drug. I intended to- I needed the 300 dollars they paid for the study.

I don't even remember what the drug was for.

Do you think I should go to a church and do confession?

Cripes I haven't thought about this in years.

On <House>, Foreman is wrecking the Hodgekin's Study by switching his new girlfriend off the Placebo and on to the New Drug.

I suppose that's not really an excuse for my behavior though.

It's kind of driving me mad that I can't remember what the drug was being tested for.

I was afraid it would give me a heart attack, but I was afraid to not be able to pay my next months rent.

Feb-03-09  hms123: <jess> I started re-watching <Once upon a time in the west> yesterday. the cinematography is terrific. Claudia Cardinale is quite photogenic.

The movie seems a bit slow in the beginning, although it does capture something about real life--long periods of quiet punctuated by sudden brief action.

I will watch the rest this afternoon.

Feb-03-09  hms123: <jess> We don't call them maniples, but we should. As for your ruining the career of some promising young scientists, I wouldn't worry about it. There are those who follow the decimal points in science just like there are those who follow them with the chess engines. So unless the drug had a whopping effect (in which case no decimal points were necessary), all you did was increase the random noise that the study had to overcome. I consider this a good thing.

I think you are off the hook.

Feb-03-09  Woody Wood Pusher: <JFQ><in the post you quoted- the guy is either kidding or he's retarded.>

That is exactly what I thought, so I asked him if he was kidding....and to cut a long story short he is a retard.

HAHAHA

Feb-03-09  hms123: <woody> I thought he was kidding, but perhaps not. Here is a quote addressed to him from someone else on that page; <We're not debating chess, <*********>, we're debating your sanity. >
