| malthrope: <WWP: Hey <mal>, I'm completely baffled here. After 1.Ba6 White can resign I know, but 1...Qe4 and mate in 7? I just don't see it...> Oh Woody it's probably this crazy line...

Black to play and mate in 7? ;)
_____________________________
1... <Qg5+> (Duh) <2. Kc3> (only move instead if 2. Qe3 Qxe3# or 2. Qf4 Qxf4+ 3. Kc3 Qd4#) <2... Rxe4> (finally! ~lol~) <3. Kb2> (King has to run instead if 3. Bxa6 then 3... Bd4+ and after <4. Kc4> - now 4 moves all lead to mate 4... Be5+, Bxf6+, Bb2+ & Bxa1+ forcing either a) 5. Kd3 Qe3# or b) 5. Kc5 Bd6# (there are multiple mating moves here), and finally if instead <4. Kd3> is played immediately then of course 4... Qe3#) <3... Bd4+> leading to these principal variations: a) 4. Ka3 Qa5#
b) 4. Nc3 Qd2 5. Bxa6 Qxc3+ 6. Ka3 then 6... Qa5# or 6. Kb1 then 6... Qb2# finally 6. Kc1 then 6... Re1+ 7. Rxe1 Qxe1# c1) 4. c3 Re1 (threat 5... Qc1#) <5. Bxa6> Qc1# c2) 4. c3 Re1 (threat 5... Qc1#) <5. cxd4> Qc1# c3) 4. c3 Re1 (threat 5... Qc1#) <5. Na3> 5... Qd2+ 6. Nc2 Qxc3+ 7. Ka3 Qa5# c4) 4. c3 Re1 (threat 5... Qc1#) <5. b4> 5... Rxb4+ now if 6. Ka3 then 6... Qa5# or if 6. Kc2 then 6... Qc1# c5) 4. c3 Re1 (threat 5... Qc1#) <5. Nd2> Qxd2+ 6. Ka3 Qxc3 and mates next 7. Ka4 Qb4# or 7. Bxa6 Qa5# or Qb4# So far, so good then I finally began analyzing this line... c6) 4. c3 Re1 (threat 5... Qc1#) <5. Ka3!> Having looked at everything I could think of but only found a mate in 8 in this line with 5... Qa5+ 6. Kb2 Rxb1+ 7. Kxb2 Qxc3+ 8. Ka3 Qa5# Then decided to try something I rarely do -- use an engine! ~lol~ So, I plugged in the position after 3... Bd4+ and it only found a ton of mates in 5 (that translates to 8 move mates). Then just to be sure plugged in the position after 4... Re1 and it only finds mates in 4 (also translates to 8 move mates). Thus, I'm baffled too Woody! ~lol~ Thought Jess would also appreciate this <JFQ: HAHAHAHAAHAHAH What a relief... These puzzles drive me crazy.> Me too Jess especially <when> I don't <find> what I'm <looking> for! ~lol~ ;) Besides, thought it would be interesting to post this as it just shows the degree of difficulty of solving for such an esoteric problem. Unless I start over anew entirely and rethink the entire game plan to see if a mate in 7 is possible. So, if Niels has the main line correct with this given position posted... click for larger viewThe position after 1. Qe4 Qg5+ 2. Kc3 Rxe4 3. Kb2 Bd4+ <achieve: <OD> Mate in 1 + 6 hah!> Since he didn't give the rest of the analysis! <Tricky Elephant>... :) <WWP: Thanks for all the analysis you posted in my forum today, tomorrow, with a clear head, I will look over it all and prime my brain cells to actually learn something, if that is still possible at my age!> You're welcome and of course! :^) - Mal
PS: <JFQ: Oh- actually <User: Malthrope> did in fact for sure meet <Bobby> and even had an evening of chess chat n' analysis with him and some other folk. I suggest you drop some inquiries in his forum. I'm sure he'd be happy to help out where he could. He is an exceedingly generous, helpful, and knowleegabable man. Also, he's ALL MAN as well, I understand.
Like John Wayne if he were a chess historian and analyst.> ~ROFPIMPLMAO~
I knew that! :) I've seen all of John Wayne's Westerns too! <sheepish gin exposed again> |
