  jessicafischerqueen: <Niels> brilliant!

I think your solution is the shortest of all I'm still checking it here...

Feb-08-09  Open Defence: well OTB Ba6 would probably extract an immediate resignation but from the puzzle point of view can't White prolong the mate by sacrificing his Queen ?
Feb-08-09  Woody Wood Pusher: <<Wood>

Thanks for your fiery encouragement of my chess games. It means the world to me.>

Hey no problem, thank you for sharing your games with everyone! If it wasn't for your enthusiasm for actually <playing> the game I don't think I would have left my comfy analysis world ever again.

<I'd try to kill you. Gladly.>

Nah I'd just hide in the rest room until you had killed somebody else and calmed down.

<<but attacking Fischer on his page is just pathetic. >

Heh- but not on the Drawnik page.

HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA>

Well, if Kramnik was unfairly pursued across the world by authorities from his own country just for playing chess, and died a half crazed exile because of the huge pressure put on him by people trying to exploit his talent and reputation all the time, then I might just draw the line at throwing mud at his name on his page here.

But no promises.

hehe

Feb-08-09  achieve: <OD> <Jess>

Deffi is right, there is a delay; I posted at her place just now.

But it's slam bam thank you mam in those lines.

My solutipn is not the shortest according to Shreddie; no Puzzle prize for shortness then...

But...

  jessicafischerqueen: <Deffi>

I'm checking <Niels'> idea and I'm not sure any more about what is fastest

White Queen <can> take the Bishop without getting mated straight away but I'm still counting moves here--

White Queen can return to the d3 square if Black checks with the Queen on the d-file-

So <c4> (losing straight off like Niels said) wouldn't need to be played?

I'm still looking

Feb-08-09  achieve: <Jess>

1...Ba6
2 Qxa6 Qe3# - it's mate, but Deffi was right, White has a delay with a queen sac at e3 and it's a quick mate all the same.

I posted chez Deffie as well.

Great work by you with your solution, though!

My amusement with 1...a6 lies in the aesthetics now, not the speed.

heh

Feb-08-09  Open Defence: <achieve> <jess> I think 1...Ba6 2.Qe4 delays it a lot many moves more :)
Feb-08-09  achieve: <OD> Mate in 1 + 6

Feb-08-09  Woody Wood Pusher: Is it really mate in 7 after Qe4?
Feb-08-09  Open Defence: < Woody Wood Pusher: Is it really mate in 7 after Qe4? > yes Woody... but I agree with <achieve> 1...Ba6 is the pretty move
Feb-08-09  achieve: Think I'll move over to <Chess n' Chat> now -- lotsa action there recently...

<OD> Thanks for making it possible ;)

OK in that case does anybody know where I can attend a quick math + chess refresher course, its urgent.

hahaha

If it's any consequence Woody in player's mode I too would have played 1... Ba6 with a really <big grin> on my face. In problemist mode, then of course, it's 1... Qg5+ and mate follows quickly. ;) - Mal

Feb-08-09  Woody Wood Pusher: Hey <mal>, I'm completely baffled here. After 1.Ba6 White can resign I know, but 1...Qe4 and mate in 7? I just don't see it...

Mind you, I didn't manage to get the cork back into the bottle of my Primitivo I opened for dinner so this might be the reason!

hehe

Thanks for all the analysis you posted in my forum today, tomorrow, with a clear head, I will look over it all and prime my brain cells to actually learn something, if that is still possible at my age!

hahaha

Feb-08-09  Boomie: <Jessie>

The intro to this BBC TV biopic is mahvelous. Hurt's performance is one of the best ever on TV in spite or maybe because of the bizarre topic. I've always loved his voice and admired his Caligula in "I, Claudius". I think this is his best performance. What does Batchimeg think?

Feb-09-09  Open Defence: <If it's any consequence Woody in player's mode I too would have played 1... Ba6 with a really <big grin> on my face.>

I think we all would have done :) thats the difference between OTB play and chess analysis

I tend to think of Corresspondence Chess Players more as Chess Analysts rather than Chess Players

Feb-09-09  Travis Bickle: <jessicafischerqueen> Mrs. Rocker here's Cheap Trick Jammin Two'Fer 'Aint That A Shame' followed by 'Surrender'! Enjoy. ; P

Problem position after the defensive try 1. Qe4

Black to play and mate in 7? ;)

_____________________________

1... <Qg5+> (Duh) <2. Kc3> (only move instead if 2. Qe3 Qxe3# or 2. Qf4 Qxf4+ 3. Kc3 Qd4#) <2... Rxe4> (finally! ~lol~) <3. Kb2> (King has to run instead if 3. Bxa6 then 3... Bd4+ and after <4. Kc4> - now 4 moves all lead to mate 4... Be5+, Bxf6+, Bb2+ & Bxa1+ forcing either a) 5. Kd3 Qe3# or b) 5. Kc5 Bd6# (there are multiple mating moves here), and finally if instead <4. Kd3> is played immediately then of course 4... Qe3#) <3... Bd4+> leading to these principal variations:

a) 4. Ka3 Qa5#

b) 4. Nc3 Qd2 5. Bxa6 Qxc3+ 6. Ka3 then 6... Qa5# or 6. Kb1 then 6... Qb2# finally 6. Kc1 then 6... Re1+ 7. Rxe1 Qxe1#

c1) 4. c3 Re1 (threat 5... Qc1#) <5. Bxa6> Qc1#

c2) 4. c3 Re1 (threat 5... Qc1#) <5. cxd4> Qc1#

c3) 4. c3 Re1 (threat 5... Qc1#) <5. Na3> 5... Qd2+ 6. Nc2 Qxc3+ 7. Ka3 Qa5#

c4) 4. c3 Re1 (threat 5... Qc1#) <5. b4> 5... Rxb4+ now if 6. Ka3 then 6... Qa5# or if 6. Kc2 then 6... Qc1#

c5) 4. c3 Re1 (threat 5... Qc1#) <5. Nd2> Qxd2+ 6. Ka3 Qxc3 and mates next 7. Ka4 Qb4# or 7. Bxa6 Qa5# or Qb4#

So far, so good then I finally began analyzing this line...

c6) 4. c3 Re1 (threat 5... Qc1#) <5. Ka3!>

Having looked at everything I could think of but only found a mate in 8 in this line with 5... Qa5+ 6. Kb2 Rxb1+ 7. Kxb2 Qxc3+ 8. Ka3 Qa5# Then decided to try something I rarely do -- use an engine! ~lol~

So, I plugged in the position after 3... Bd4+ and it only found a ton of mates in 5 (that translates to 8 move mates). Then just to be sure plugged in the position after 4... Re1 and it only finds mates in 4 (also translates to 8 move mates). Thus, I'm baffled too Woody! ~lol~ Thought Jess would also appreciate this <JFQ: HAHAHAHAAHAHAH What a relief... These puzzles drive me crazy.> Me too Jess especially <when> I don't <find> what I'm <looking> for! ~lol~ ;)

Besides, thought it would be interesting to post this as it just shows the degree of difficulty of solving for such an esoteric problem. Unless I start over anew entirely and rethink the entire game plan to see if a mate in 7 is possible.

So, if Niels has the main line correct with this given position posted...

<WWP: Thanks for all the analysis you posted in my forum today, tomorrow, with a clear head, I will look over it all and prime my brain cells to actually learn something, if that is still possible at my age!>

You're welcome and of course! :^) - Mal

PS: <JFQ: Oh- actually <User: Malthrope> did in fact for sure meet <Bobby> and even had an evening of chess chat n' analysis with him and some other folk.

I suggest you drop some inquiries in his forum. I'm sure he'd be happy to help out where he could. He is an exceedingly generous, helpful, and knowleegabable man.

Also, he's ALL MAN as well, I understand.

Like John Wayne if he were a chess historian and analyst.>

~ROFPIMPLMAO~

I knew that! :) I've seen all of John Wayne's Westerns too! <sheepish gin exposed again>
