Good grief you are always welcome in here for as much <chess n' chat> (phrase property of JFQ all rights reserved- <Woody> you'll hear from my lawyers in the morning) as you like.

If I have some game up or strange analysis I'll always just "transport" the conversation to another locale...

Say, <Howard's> place.

In the mean time, the more the better:

A: I like all of your instructive posts

B: I'm closing in on the 568 page forum record.

heh....

I'm number two <Bigmouth> on the list as of today as well...

Mrs. Spam

Feb-09-09  hms123: <niels> <jess> My place is your place.

<jess> Your latest posts on the Fischer page were marvellous. I am just sorry that I wasn't as quick as <wannabe> in getting to see the one that got deleted. It must have been a doozy.

Feb-09-09  achieve: heh - I noticed you keep a keen eye on the stats page...

It will intensify when nearing the No. 1 spot.

heh

I was flustered at the fact that I am on almost <half> of your post count-- even though

A. You type 5 times faster than me (true)

B. You visit 3 times more forums than me

C. We've both been blabbering for roughly the same period of time

D. I must be missing a critical function in my mathematical approach

Good morning <howard> ;)

Feb-09-09  Woody Wood Pusher: <<Woody> you'll hear from my lawyers in the morning) as you like.>

As you will <JFQ>, but rule No.60023 article 3 paragraph 2 clearly states that any intellectual property that finds its way into my forum becomes my property.

Those rules are 100 % water tight and cover all legal eventualities, they are even endorsed by <Ed Trice>.

......

OK perhaps an out of court settlement will be better for me anyway.

hahaha

Feb-09-09  achieve: Ah - I forgot about the fact that I for a number of months talked excessively, daily, with <dakgootje> and <Brankat> , while you were preparing and setting up shop for Korea.

[Insert: summary of main defensive try to prevent mate in seven (7) as stipulated.]

<2.Qe4 Qg5+ 3.Kc3 Rxe4 4.Kb2 Bd4+>-<5.c3>-<5...Re1>

click for larger view

This is the key position which I concentrated on... Also examined the 5... Bxf1 lines (instead of 5... Re1) and these also result in longer mates (8 & 9 moves by the official start count). Now after <5... Re1> in the diagram position above (of course the aesthetic move!) there is only one move (to prevent mate in 7) which is...

<6.Ka3>

Instead as <hms> points out <6.Nd2 Qxd2+ 7.Ka3 Rxa1 8.Bb5 Rxa2+ 9.Kb4 Qxc3# #0/0> mate in 9 (actually mate in 8 see explaniation below).

<6...Qa5+ 7.Kb2 Rxb1+ 8.Kxb1 Qxc3 9.Bxa6 Qb2#>-<#0/0 >

Or conversely: 6... Qa5+ 7. Kb2 Rxb1+ 8. Rxb1 Qxc3+ 9. Ka3 Qa5#

click for larger view

This was my main line (Note: the move numbers are not mistyped but <hms> starts off the task with 1... Ba6 2. Qe4 where these are the first two moves as stipulated. However, the problem as given actually starts with the countdown to mate in 7 with the moves 1... Ba6 2. Qe4 as already previously played. ;)

Like so: <1. Qe4 Qg5+ 2.Kc3 Rxe4 3.Kb2 Bd4+ 4.c3 Re1 5. Ka3 Qa5+ 6. Kb1 Rxb1+ 7. Rxb1 Qxc3+ 8. Ka3 Qa5#>

Which is the case for both main variations given above (both are mates in 8). ;)

So, Woody the correct answer to your original question:

<WWP: Hey <mal>, I'm completely baffled here. After 1.Ba6 White can resign I know, but 1...Qe4 and mate in 7? I just don't see it...>

is...

<"Me too Woody! I can only find mate in 8 with best defensive play by White after extensive analysis which I trust implicitly!">

~lol~ End of story... :^) - Mal

PS: Thanks Howard for the comp assist! ~\▢/~

Feb-09-09  Ragh: <JFK> A great couple of posts on the Fischer page about 'patzers and experts' by aptly citing scenes from <Searching for Bobby Fischer> and then intertwining them with personal examples later. Did I ever mention that your sporadic burst of ideas sometimes contain something remarkable to ponder about in profound ways. And, not to mention the richness of literary proficiency present throughout the content, while continuously maintaining the chain of thought. All seriousness aside, when are the celebrations scheduled to start to commemorate your rise to the top of elite kibitzing ranks at the ChessGames.com Statistics Page.
Feb-09-09  Woody Wood Pusher: <mal><hms> Thanks for the ultra detailed analysis of this crazy position!

Who would have thought there could be so many complications even after White goes a queen down?!

That White King sure is one slippery little eel.

When I looked at it I couldn't get the mate in 7 once the White King had stepped out the back door to a3 and I wondered what I was missing (or miscounting) after <OD> said there was a mate in 7.

Details like that have a habit of lodging in my brain like a shard of glass and driving me insane.

Although when I first checked out the result of <hms>'s analysis I thought it was a mate in 9 we were faced with, but now I finally <know> it was a mate in 8.

Ahhh I can breathe a sigh of relief.

Thanks again for illuminating this position with such clear surgical precision!

Cheers!

Woody - I'm sure when <hms123> gets here we shall both tell you, <"The pleasure is all ours and it's all in a hard day's work!"> ~lol~

For my part, I've solved some absolutely impossible Chess problems... For me the harder the better is the name of the game! Even having solved several esoteric Chess problems for which it wasn't perfectly clear if there even was a solution. ~ROFL~ Having started solving them almost 50 years ago (48 years to be exact). I just never stopped. :))

Anyway, now rest assured we can clearly say a forced <'Mate in 7'> does not exist here. ;) Nothing more to see -- move along! <totally satisfied problemist solving grin> :^) - Mal

Feb-09-09  crawfb5: <jessicafischerqueen: Well said <crawdaddy to b5>.

Thank you for the funny and interesting story about your ID name that you gave me.>

Soitenly. I'm happy to do my small part to help you go for the record here. :-)

I can't believe I misspelled Joe Stra<c>zyski's name. I've only seen it and typed it a gazillion times and Doreen also has one of those alphabet soup names. Must have been a senior moment.

<Also, You'll be pleased to know I bought a Korean model Lab Dog cooling platform.

Man does it ever work great. Thanks for the suggestion!!>

Well done. Now your machine won't be. :-)

<I don't know how they do it- but as you probably know it's more than just a fan system.

The metal it's made out of is <always cooler> than anything else I touch in my room.

How do they do that?

Is it a special metal with a lower <specific temperature>?

Is there such a thing as <specific temperature>?

Ie- is marble always cooler than the air around it?

I'd Google, but it's far more interesting to pester you for these answers.

Mrs. Paratroops>

Perhaps you are thinking of <specific heat>:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Specif...

Ok, my take on the cooling platform is this -- the metal seems to be aluminum. That's heat sink material, even though actual heat sinks in electronic gizmos are in direct physical contact with the hot spot. The fan pulls air down through the holes in the metal and exhausts it out the back at the bottom. The metal helps suck heat away from machine and the fan helps keep the metal cool. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Remember, in today's Brave New World Order, centipawn grubbing is its own reward. :-)

  jessicafischerqueen: Ha!Q Thanks <Crawdaddy to b5>!!!!

<Specific heat>

yes that's it.

So in a day-- you know, sun rising, setting etc...

If Marble absorbed heat more slowly than other substances, it would remain cooler than other things in the room for some time.

then once it did warm up, it would be bed time and it would cool off again overnight!!!!

HA!!

That's right. HA!

Feb-09-09  Woody Wood Pusher: <JFQ> I think I have evidence that Bent Larsen had hypnotic powers...

Karpov vs Larsen, 1979

and

Fischer vs Larsen, 1970

If I had not seen the games already, I would never be able to guess the players in a million years!

What do you think his real secret was?

hehe
