| Mar-01-09 | | madlydeeply: <here in the US it is legally a vegetable because of a Supreme Court ruling in the 19th century having to do with tariffs. The law is a ass.>
Ah,but law is always evolving, grasshopper! F'rinstance, in the 1980s Reagan wanted to classify Ketchup as a vegetable so as to provide a legally balanced school lunch program of french fries and ketchup...having all 4 food groups...Potatoes, vegetables, sugar, and grease!! Actually i remember a black standup talking about the 4 food groups....SUGAR, FAT, CAFFEINE, AND FLOURESCENT FOOD. So Mountain dew almost has all of them...just lacks fat. So Mountain Dew and a couple strips of uncooked bacon and you're ready to go!! Hey that reminds me of what Vera told me my 80 year old WWII Silesian (German) refugee friend....she said the russian soldiers would eat raw strips of pork fat so as to increase their tolerance to Vodka binges. ETC.

| Mar-01-09 | | hms123: <madlydeeply> I have a friend (the same one who think we are just passing through a strange part of the universe where computers work) who claims that Irish Coffee has the four basic food groups: caffeine, cream, alcohol, and sugar. |

| Mar-01-09 | | achieve: <Howard> Bravo! to Zoltan and Bela Bartok! Zoltan Kocsis is a favourite pianist and teacher for me. I have several masterclasses he has given on video, and devoured them; the dedicationa and way with his students is just a wonderful thing to witness, as he, as a real hungarian, shows his frustration equally honest as he does his praise and approval. I know his playing predominantly from these (masterclasses) lectures on Beethoven Sonatas, and of course I was inevitably remended of the first interpretation that really ever blew me away, hit me in the face... I was stunned into silence; had cried, had become jubilant; pensive; revitalized, as if washed up on a beach by forceful yet gentle waves, almost like a survivor of a shipwreck ;) Luckily I was able to tape it the next time it was shown, at a particular time the next day. What a treasure and source of inspiration that turned out to be. Reflecting upon what Beethoven was sharing with us through his last monumental 32nd sonata, "his 111", so to speak - is what really grabbed me by the neck, and made me forget all else for a while, as I was taken on one of the most honest journeys, from heartbreak to triumph and silence, and back again. It was as if Ludwig reached out his old but strong hands, to say goodbye, hugging and then waving- and Claudio Arrau had prepared himself for that taping/recording, to pass on the message of deepest of loves, pains and triumphs. Someone said in a comment: "This simple turn on the theme's closing cadence is, a heartbreak made ironic by its triumph." This is "da stuff," and basically all that really matters to me, as it somehow forms a synthesis (connects and re-presents) all that is really wothwhile under the sun, and beyond. In my view. Actually the sound quality here leaves some left to wish for, and I am sure it is available somewheres in pristine condition - but here are the two links: 2nd movement part 1/2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9GY... part 2/2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kRU... I have also an Interview with Maestro Arrau, at an advanced age, in which he also manages to move me and reach me, in a profound way, as I seem to only get touched, most of the time, is my experience, by young children, and elderly people. Close to the beginning- and close to the end. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: heh- they have a new teacher at our school.
He is a Pakastani gentleman who was born and raised in England. And he is an expert chess player!!
Plus he's extremely good looking, and I've offered to "show him around" heh..
He can't speak a word of Korean and he has no phone, internet, alien registration card, bankbook, or clue. It's like getting IBM at 15 cents a share!!
At the least I'm hoping for a good OTB partner.
Finally!!
He is very kind unlike most of the other "native English speaker teachers" over here, who are mainly drunken louts and hos. CASE CLOSED |

| Mar-01-09 | | Woody Wood Pusher: Ha looks like the tide washed in some well needed luxuries to your desert island <JFQ>. OTB chess *is* so much more fun. Do you have a chess clock? It's always best to play by one rule IMO, club rules, at least until you know somebody better. 'Can I take that move back?' gets tiring quickly.
I hope he is as strong as you say, I've met one or two 'expert' players at work before, and it can turn out to be a disappointingly liberal description... PS sneak a game my way so I can see what he is really like. hehe
Thanks <JFQ>! |

| Mar-02-09 | | Ragh: <Jess> Yes, Indeed. Linares has entered into a very exciting phase, as always it is every year. 6 White wins and 5 Black wins so far. And more victories to come as the final rounds approach. I wonder if anybody misses Kramniks, Lekos and Svidlers here. |

|
| Mar-02-09 | | Ragh: <notyetagm: <Ragh> But NONE OF THE ABOVE seems to be working even better at Linares this year.> Well, there are 11 wins and some draws that were very exciting to watch. Very much unlike those regular 15-move "GM draws". |

And, <Drawnik> is still listed as an official participant. :O Oodles of Amber tourney details given in <Current Chess Events> on my Profile. I'm really looking forward to this one...
