Ok I don't know why exactly, but I love your <ID name>.

I find myself actually saying it out loud when I'm walking.

"Blacksburg."

I don't know why!

Sometimes I think <Blacksburg, Pennsylvania>.

Or <The Battle of Blacksburg>.

Or, I'll have a <Blacksburger and fries>.

HELP

(is there a "story" behind your user name? If so, please tell me ok?)

Mar-13-09  blacksburg: <JFQ>

here's where i live - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blacks....

i graduated from Virginia Tech in 2003, and decided to stay here for a while. it's a really cool little town.

video of the day!

incidentally, nearly every restaurant in town has a <Blacksburger> on the menu. :)

jessicafischerqueen: <Blacksburg> what a great article!

Look at this amazing story from the <Draper's Meadow Massacre>:

<A group of Shawnee entered the sparsely populated camp virtually unimpeded. At least five settlers were killed: Mr. Patton, Elenor Draper (Mary Draper Ingles' mother), Bettie Draper's baby, Casper,[2] and Philip Barger, who was described as an old man and was decapitated by the Indians; they delivered his head in a bag to a neighbor, explaining that an acquaintance had arrived to visit[3]. Five settlers were taken back to Kentucky as captives to live among the tribe, including Mary Draper Ingles [1], who escaped at Big Bone, Kentucky, and made a journey of more than eight hundred miles (1300 km) across the Appalachian Mountains back to Draper's Meadow. Her marriage to William Ingles is said to be the first white wedding west of the Alleghenies. Also taken captive were her two sons; one of which, Thomas Ingles, lived among the Indians for many years and never fully gave up the Shawnee way of life.>

This sounds like an excellent subject for a movie. Maybe we should buy the rights!!

Ok I'm going back for more...

Interesting historical facts-

1. Cows.

<Traffic in Blacksburg increased sufficiently enough that by January 1913 the town voted against allowing cows to continue to roam in town.>

Interesting historical facts--

2. Cops.

<The establishment of official law enforcement began in 1937 when Officer Dave <<<"Highpockets">>> Sumner became the first Blacksburg police officer. >

Heh... "Highpockets..."

heh... well Virginia Tech <is> a "land grant" university.

You've reminded me of one of my most favorite literary passages-

It's <James Thurber> telling about one of his friends from <Ohio State University>...

"He had ambitions to become a journalist, so he joined the school paper, where they gave him the "agricultural beat". Now, since <Ohio State> was a "land grant" university, this was actually a lot of responsibility. My friend tried, but was despondent when the editor told him that his stories lacked "zip," and that he should try to capture the readers' attention with an interesting first sentence.

So my friend's next article began with the following sentence:

"Who has noticed the sores on top of the horses in the animal husbandry building?"

HAHAHAHAAHAHAH

That's from <Thurber's> hilarious autobiography, <My Life and Hard Times>.

Mar-13-09  blacksburg: <JFQ> - re: IM Day - he seems like a perfectly nice and respectable fellow, but unfortunately he seems to have by snookered by some nasty little con men.

i just figure that if i was getting conned, i'd appreciate it someone pointed it out to me. but if he insists that the book is real, i guess that's up to him. he's still a stronger player than i'll ever be, and he's entitled to his opinion.

i am <blacksburg> on chess.com. i've only played 3 games on the live blitz beta there, and i don't really know how everything works over there yet. i'd love to play a friendly game with you sometime, but i gotta go sleep now...i'll send you a friend request...if i can figure out how to...and don't worry about your low rating, it's bound to improve once you play me :)

Mar-13-09  madlydeeply: Hey aunt jessy thanks for reminding me of me the winawer. Some of the best games by the big boys were winawers. I think a player has to be REALLY REALLY good to play it because one must keep the tension in a defensive posture and keep an eye out for the perfectly concieved elegant counterattack.

for instance...would you have ever thought of castling kinside on move 14...?

Vasiukov vs Korchnoi, 1964

PS I think Korchnoi might be turning into my all time favortie player. I should dedicate my forum to him. Exceptin' on accounta i'm sooo lazy.

JINX!

I just got back from your house.

Ok I will check out the <Vaseline-Korchnoi> game, thanks for dropping it.

Yes, the <Winawer> is certainly a deep mystery -- it certainly is to me- I keep playing it with White and I don't think I've won a single game yet.

I don't play the <French> with Black.

Mar-13-09  Woody Wood Pusher: <my <letsplaychess.com> rating is 2039, I think-->

That's really impressive <JFQ>! You and <OD> could have a clash of the Titans match.

My yahoo 'rating' has been hovering around 1930, but I'm not making much progress anymore.

I need longer time controls to break the psychologically important 2000 barrier.

haha

  jessicafischerqueen: Hey <Wood>!

heh...

Unfortunately for you, as you know, the 2000+ <Yahoo set> don't even play Blitz.

Only Bullet.

Why don't you try FICS?

<OD> is well over <2100> and I suspect that the base-rating sytem at <lestplaychess> is set at 200 points higher than at her site.

<letsplaychess> starts you at <1400> as "beginner level" and most correspondence sites start you at <1200>.

So in relation to <Deffi>, I'd be a good 300 points lower than her-

Which would match my impression of my playing strength in relation to hers based on looking at her games, and also her ability to analyze.

I really really wish there was a <blind rating function> like I said.

I get cowed when I face a "big number", although the flip side is I"m elated if I can beat "big number."

Mar-13-09  achieve: <Jess> <Howard> Thanks so much for your emails. I sent one back to you both. God your messages mean a lot to me. Respect.

And Sincere apologies to <Jess> and <woody>.

<Jess> I'll get back to you by emu, more specific to your questions, when I get my act together again and have been able to catch up on a sleep deficit.

Details in the email but I really am considering moving out for a few days, to try and get some much needed rest.

For now: sincere apologies.

jessicafischerqueen: It's no worries <Niels>- take care of your health first/foremost- it's survival.

Sleep deprivation is hellish- I've also some experience with that.

Mar-13-09  Woody Wood Pusher: <And Sincere apologies to <Jess> and <woody>>

Well it is good to see you are quick to apologize once you have cooled off <achieve>.

I don't hold grudges and so you can be sure there is no ill feeling on my part.

I can only speak for my own culture and generation in particular, but in case it is different where you come from, I should like to point out that using such language the way you did in England would cause very deep offense. It might be worth keeping that in mind if you find yourself in my country anytime.

And that is the last you shall hear from me on the matter.

I wish you all the best in recovering from any problems you find yourself with ATM and I hope you are feeling better soon.

Thanks.

Mar-13-09  crawfb5: The Ruy I mentioned the other day just ended. I put it in my forum with some notes. You might find it of interest, although it <is> an exchange Ruy <THAT'S BAD>...oh, wait, I already did that... :-)

Perhaps you've already read it:

Mar-13-09  Open Defence: regarding playing against an engine, I would certainly recommend HIARCS as it has a very human like playing style, but yes, engines are more useful practising end games, certain types of mates etc

your playing strength develops more playing against humans and playing OTB, though Nakamura might be an exception

Mar-13-09  Woody Wood Pusher: I always used to like the way Rebel played <OD>. Whatever happened to that program?
Mar-13-09  Open Defence: Rebel's programmer Ed has retired, but his last release of Rebel Pro Deo is available,

it is a very aggressive engine so humans might easily be outplayed by its tactics

Mar-13-09  Woody Wood Pusher: Thanks <OD>, I will look into that Pro Deo version when I get the chance.

The last Rebel I had was Rebel Century on Windows 95.

Its interface was terrible, but it played like a beast compared to some of the other programs I had at the time.
