Mar-13-09  Travis Bickle: Jess Im so sick of hearing about that hoax book! You have one conman in 'Fast Eddie/Hackmate' and his scarecrow ("If I Only Had A Brain") sidekick Joshka constantly posting fabrications, is enough to make you sick!

  jessicafischerqueen: <chanchero>

Great article and thanks so much. The meeting between <Fischer and Shaap Jr.> was filmed and is on <youtube>, as you probably know.

The whole sequence is in the <third Bobby Biography> I linked in my Profile. The report of the incident in the article is not as accurate as the filmed "reality TV" version- <Schaap Jr.> probed <Bobby> a bit with a few questions.

In the Biography I mentioned, <Schaap Jr> recounts the incident in his own words as well.

However, I bet <Bjork> can play chess. Not sure about her opening repetoire.

Doesn't everyone who doesn't live in Canada or America play chess?

Mar-13-09  just a kid: Man I am so mad at myself.I was playing the game of my life on instantchess.com.I was playing a beautifully dominating strategic game with the Bogo-Indian.I was in control of the whole game.A game that nimzowitsch would be proud of.I was in a won position and I blew away the win in time pressure.I still got the draw, but it was heartbreaking. It was against a 1900.I am so mad!It was the position that I get in my dreams!

I happen to know you were the HIARCS pit boss at this year's INDY 500.

Mar-14-09  Eyal: EMU alert!

Btw, have you been following the multiple-part interview with Anand on chessbase? Part 3 of 4 is up now, and - quite disappointingly - they omit to ask him about "Banana" when touching on the subject of nicknames:

<Kasparov is called the "Beast of Baku", Tal was called the "Magician from Riga" and so on. You are the "Tiger from Madras", are you happy with this or would you like to choose something else as a nickname?

No, I'm fine. We don't have tigers in Madras, but otherwise I'm very happy with it. In fact we went recently to see tigers and I quite like the animal.>

jessicafischerqueen: Yes, but <Banana> is known to be afraid of <anteaters>.

Thanks <N'Swaba>!

I look forward to reading your important theories.

(notice how Banana said he visits every chess webite except this one... hmmmm... do you think it's because this one is full of <yard apes>?

Mar-14-09  Eyal: If you're still interested in the Ruy, here's a nice game from the ongoing <10th European Individual Championship>:

S Sjugirov vs M Rodshtein, 2009

This is an instructive example of how many games in this opening are won by White:

1. Blocking the center with d5.

2. Aimlessly shuffling around pieces for about 30-40 moves.

(which leads directly to -)

3. A crushing attack against the black king.

jessicafischerqueen: Heh... that's actually an appealing formula.

I only hope I will one day get to the level where I can <shuffle aimlessly> without losing straight off.

  jessicafischerqueen: <N'Swaba>

I will be enjoying your EMU for breakfast.

In the meantime, I've just spent over an hour examining why Black resigns in the <Spiro Agnew v. Rodney King> game you posted.

When I say "examining" I mean playing it out against my Shredder.

Ok I was careful- I don't know if I chose the best line yet but I determined that Black must lose a piece by force no matter what move he makes from the resigned position.

So I won the piece-

But to bring home the win, I had to learn more about the Queen v. Queen with lots of space theory.

You have to watch for checks on every single move, and also forks etc.

I also found out that it's better to press forward if you have a material advantage than to try to defend every pawn or "stabilize" or "consolidate" the position.

No good player is going to make a move that lets you trade off the Queens by force.

Keeping my minor pieces near my King- to control squares the enemy Queen could use to check it- and also to provide some "cover"-

I let <Shredder> gobble up some pawns while I gradually sheparded my <h-pawn> up the board far enough that eventually I forced him to trade off Queens to prevent me from scoring a touchdown.

Whew!

Also, I wouldn't have won this ending- despite being a whole piece up- without having three "do overs" in which I had to backtrack and see where I had made a mistake.

Mainly, I learned that you have to be careful on each move.

Sounds obvious I know-

Ok then!

jessicafischerqueen: Actually you know I don't even know if my "line" was best, or even necessary.

Once I saw I could win a piece by force I just took it.

For all I know there might be a checkmate there somewheres right off the bat-

I'm not looking at it again tonight though.

Mar-14-09  Eyal: Well, if you want to be sure you haven't missed anything "obvious", you can keep playing the final position with Black against <Shredder> as White... Btw, note that instead of the flashy 53.Bxh5, the immediate 53.Rxd7 wins no less effectively.
