| Mar-17-09 | | madlydeeply: Hi Jess your dog/cat stories remind me of Mexico and the Rez. There are no dog catchers in either place so there are always mongrels slinking around. I was astounded once near Canyon de Chelly (if you ever are around four corners and you don't see this place you are a GOOF!!) when I espied a stray dog eating pine nuts...he'd put a pine cone in his mouth...crunch crunch...spit out the bits and chew the seeds. What talent!! you can't pet those fellas either. And then my good friend Charlie had a lovely Mexican lass fiance for awhile...and when he went down to see the folks in MayHeeKo they were astounded that he would "let a cat on the bed" (his cat fatty) because cats were considered so VILE AND DISGUSTING. HA But my last girl was a real cat lover here in Philly and she'd catch cats get them spayed cut the ear and re release...she was always looking after cats and she knows all these other ladies that look after cats... Later I read a little "cat history" and found some interesting things...apparently there were no cats in Europe until the middle ages...no references to cats but it was "useful" to have ferrets around...and cats slowly infiltrated through europe one brood at a time...but they were welcomed by the people apparently because it became a SERIOUS crime to kill a cat...the fine was enough grain to cover the cat from head to toe. Because cats ate mice? to protect the harvest or protect from Plague or both?
Neato, eh?
So that made me realize that there are always people around (generally ladies in my experience) that look after all the cats in the villiage. A little "cultural evolution" resulting in a "genetic personality type": the CAT LADY!! Incidentally, in my Mother in law's little villiage in France...where she lived in the old Marble Cutters cottage (different marble floor in every room) right next to the graveyard...there was an old lady who spent all her retirement money and time buying food for all the cats in the villiage and wandering around feeding them...Adorable, eh? Also in that villiage all the old ladies had a social event where they'd get together and go down to the graveyard to say hi to their departed husbands...that was their gossipy time you know how the ladies are!! Sweet little world sometimes, eh?
(talking like a canuck...eh?)
you know the chicanas don't say eh? they say...well? Why did you diss me, well? Homes? later |

| Mar-17-09 | | hms123: <jess> Emu--part deux is on its way. A little less dramatic. I may have to add to it at a later date. |

<dramatic>
1.dramaturugical
2. histrionic
Heh...
Actually I don't think I've ever "read you" in a histrionic moment. Hmmm....
Potential example hidden from public view:
<Howard>: "Waiter! There's a drosphilla in my chilled connsome!" <Waiter>: "Shhh! Keep it down, or everyone will want one..." HHAHAHAAH
Very good EMU thank you.

That is the funniest post I have read in ages <JFQ>! Not even Dr.Johnson could find enough words to argue with you! haha |

| Mar-17-09 | | A.G. Argent: Queen Jess, inre the Argent bit. Nope, I was pondering a good user name/handle for a free email account a while back and it just sorta, kinda popped in to existence before my mindless eye. I'm also a serious crossword nut and I see argent once in a while as a clue/answer being an Old English word for silver and AG is the symbol for silver and badda hence bing had-a-ring (to-it) ergo etc. Whacky, eh? (I have apologized profusely to cg.com user AgentRgent for the similarity assuring him it was indeed a coinkidink. I now call him Dad owing to his seniority. And my youthiness. Hah!) And no, thank you, for your input answering my queries about the unmentionable aforesaid well-trodden henceforth to be possibly touchy subject concerning certain things faux. Nudge bloody nudge. |
|
| Mar-17-09 | | A.G. Argent: Oh, and by the by, QJ, please to look past the baseball stuff at my forum. Please to grace my forum periodically with the odd insight/observation/non-sequitur jot or two. PS - Am I way off base in thinking that I recall that you're living in S. Korea? |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Thanks <Wood>!
Mainly, however, I'm only copying you. I think one of the main joys of this website is making fun of <GM names> and also joking about them. Plus, we all have our tastes.
This was one of my favorite posts of all time, and it actually appeared on a <Live Game Page> if you can believe it. <Leko> was playing and that <box-headed bespectacled> picture of him was on screen. So this guy posts:
<I find the games of <Peter Leko> to be very boring. Although, looking at his picture, he looks like a nice guy. Nice and boring.> HAHAHAHAHAAH
I'm still laughing about that one. Also the succinctness of your post about <Japanese Manga Animation>" "Ah, he's just a big baby."
HAHAHAHAHAAH
The timing was perfect on that one.

| Mar-17-09 | | crawfb5: <jessica> Here's a portrait of Bobby I stumbled across just now. I wasn't sure if you'd seen it. Done by a Danish artist, she says she finished a day before Bobby died. Actually, all the chess art here is worth a look. Nice stuff. http://www.carinajorgensen.com/Ches... |

| Mar-18-09 | | achieve: <Jess> Re (Rook-) Endgames: "We" really should buy <Dvoretzky>'s Endgame Manual, and also highly recommended are the endgame books by <Joszef Pinter>, with one volume specifically on Rook endgames. ('1000 Rook endgames') And <Cheron> is still available, I found, but probably only in German and French, not sure.... (links and more stuff in my forum.) Maybe there are other visitors here that have some tips on top quality endgame tutorials. |

<Is <Carina Jorgensen> a friend of yours by any chance?> A very cute Danish blonde? Not in <my> lifetime. :-) <If not, how did you happen to come across her website?> She did this http://www.carlinart.net/Chess/thec... piece for the author of <The Chess Artist> and somebody over at <The Kibitzer's Cafe> linked to it. |

| Mar-18-09 | | crawfb5: ...by rook or by crook...
I learned a lot from Levenfish and Smyslov's <Rook Endings>. I have the older translation using descriptive notation. There is a newer version in algebraic, but I have heard it has numerous transcription errors. I also learned a lot from the whole Averbakh series (Pawn Endings, Bishop Endings, Knight Endings, Queen Endings, etc.). Unfortunately, I think all of these are out of print. They might be available used with a bit of online digging (English versions would be in descriptive). Convekta is selling what looks to be a DVD version of the series along with a 5-piece tablebase for around $40USD. That might be an option. Here's a brief review: http://seagaard.dk/review/eng/sw_en... |

| Mar-18-09 | | theodor: about endgame:<It's like a totally different world than the middle game. Almost as if one game had ended, and then you have to start another one all over again.> I should say the same for middle age and old age! I hate end games! |

| Mar-18-09 | | Eyal: <The technique of Rook and pawn endings consists partly of incomprehensible moves.>
(from the Ivanchuk vs Anand, 2009 page) click for larger viewCase in point - in the diagram position 47.Kd5? as played by Ivanchuk only draws, whereas 47.Kd4!! wins. Go figure.
(Well, actually you can with the help of the analysis here - http://www.chessbase.com/news/2009/... - but I wouldn't say that should be the first priority in studying basic rook endgames...) |

| Mar-19-09 | | blacksburg: hey <JFQ> if you're looking for an endgame book, here's my favorite. http://www.amazon.com/Endgame-Tacti... it shouldn't be compared to dvoretsky or fine, it's not meant to be a book like that, but nevertheless, i have learned a lot from it. and it is the only endgame book that has made me laugh out loud. |
