 | | jessicafischerqueen: Doh!
I got up very early so as to prepare to play my game today. So everything in order, I played and he tried a coffee house trick and I punished him. Bad news is that I need a stronger opponent-
Good news is that my rating is on the climb again so I will attract stronger opponents soon. Heh- although I mixed up my colors- I alternate colors each game and I played Black again thinking I had just played White, when actually I didn't play White yesterday I just thought I did because I spent so much time analyzing my FAWN PAWN game that I "thought" it was my turn for Black again. Another Closed Sicilian and another unsound sac on my King. This guy was better than the other guy though and his sac might have worked without accurate defence- it was a better sac because it drew my King up to the 3d rank, by force. <Shredder> gives me <+1.97> after the forcing sequence, however, and all that was left for me to do was to coordinate pieces and walk my King back to the back rank. What is the point of playing a Closed Sicilian if your plan is to sac for an attack on the Kingside?? This game was harder to play though because he was better than the guy I beat yesterday. Ok thanks so much everyone for all of the excellent work you did on my FAWN PAWN game- I will take a close look at the new material now.

Thanks!
I've been playing and studying chess for 7 hours in a row now so I haven't had time to check my mail yet. I will soon though, |

 | | chancho: <Jess> I believe <Jim Bartle> mentioned that he found that Mikhail Tal himself was very impressed with Edward Labate's book collection. People who have ordered books from Labate have expressed being satisfied with his service and timely deliveries. I also remember reading about his poor Huskie getting shot by some neighbor when he first moved to Alabama. The guy is a decent sort imo.
Of course you already know this, but just the same... |

| Apr-12-09 | | notyetagm: Li Shilong vs Wang Yue, 2006 33 ... ?
 click for larger view33 ... b4-b3! <interference: a4-c2 @ b3>
 click for larger view34 a2xb3 ♘b7-d8 <reinforce pin: c6-c2>
click for larger view34 ... b4-b3! is a great example of Wang Yue's tactical prowess, finding a winning idea in an apparently simple drawish ending. <notyetagm: 33 ... b4-b3! is a tremendous example of <INTERFENCE> by Wang Yue.The point of this tactical shot is to <BLOCK> the diagonal a4-c2 at b3. Then White will be unable to meet the threat of piling on the <PINNED> White d7-bishop with 34 ... Nb7-d8 by <RUBBERBANDING> 35 Bd7-a4 since the line of the White a4-bishop does not reach the <UNDEFENDED> c2-rook due to the presence of either a Black pawn or a White pawn on b3. <INTERFERENCE> works along the lines of <"I <BLOCK> the line, you take it, YOU <BLOCK> the line">. With 33 ... b4-b3!, Black says "I <BLOCK> the line a4-c2 with my Black b3-pawn, if you take it with 34 a2xb3, then YOU <BLOCK> the line a4-c2 with YOUR b3-pawn." An ingenius tactical shot by Wang Yue, winning what looks like a fairly even endgame.> |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <rahhhhhhhhhh> I tried twice but I don't know how to work the controls. Also, I'm exaggerating. There are tons of people on <Yahoo> who can whup me. I've just been "playing up the ladder" with a new ID I started to get myself out of a bad slump that started with me getting really sick over the Winter Holiday and getting badly rusty. Now that the new ID rating is climbing I'll get tougher people again soon. |

Kirk: Scotty! I need more power!
Scotty: Cap'n! I canna keep it up much longer!
Spock: The Klingon War Bird is uncloaking.
Nurse: Ooh. That's a big one.
Kirk: I can't just sit here. Bones?
Bones: Dammit, Jim! I'm a doctor not a proctologist. Kirk: Maybe we should surrender.
Spock: Captain, I cannot believe my ears.
Kirk and Bones: Neither can we!
Beam me up, Jessie |

| Apr-12-09 | | blacksburg: <JFQ> out of curiosity, why do you play on yahoo instead of FICS or ICC? |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hi <Blacksburg>
Mainly habit.
I'm so used to how to work the site, and to tell you the truth despite my complaints, I have a method that allows me to get a <2 hours each> game against a player in my ratings range any time <24-7> without having to wait longer than 10 minutes or so. I'm estimating my current rating maybe <1700-1800> USCF based on evaluating my performance at my old Chess Club, where many players had USCF ratings, and comparing that to the ratings range I was successful at on <Yahoo> during that period. IMO the ratings on <yahoo> are "deflated"- They are lower than the USCF equivalent, in playing strength. I'm pretty sure about that.
Either that or I'm suddenly 200 points stronger when I play actual OTB with a human I can throw a rock at. Anyhoo I like the site truth be told. |

| Apr-12-09 | | crawfb5: Had a quick look at your FAWN PAWN (are you sure you don't want to call it a <BRAWN> PAWN?) collection. I thought I would dig up a couple at e6 for symmetry. Same criteria -- WP at e6, BP at e7, no BPs at d7 or f7, established by move 25, maintained for 10 ply, both players 2400+, White wins. Bogo has the reputation of being the Rodney Dangerfield of his era because of all those losses to Dr. AA, but he could spank people if given a chance. Here he takes out the Tarrasch. Bogoljubov vs Tarrasch, 1925
Speaking of the good doctor, here he goes on a fishing expedition. Alekhine vs Levenfish, 1912
Donner wanted a party, but the ensuing bad Bishop must have really Hort. Hort vs J H Donner, 1972
I'll stop now. These games are <almost> too easy to find. |

| Apr-12-09 | | madlydeeply: our score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that "all men are created equal" Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived, and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of it, as a final resting place for those who died here, that the nation might live. This we may, in all propriety do. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow, this ground -- The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have hallowed it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here; while it can never forget what they did here. It is rather for us, the living, we here be dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that, from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here, gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve these dead shall not have died in vain; that the nation, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people by the people for the people, shall not perish from the earth. |

| Apr-12-09 | | Boomie: Filibuster!
Will the Senator yield for a question? I have a question concerning "A Tale of Two Cities". To adequately phrase the question, I will need to read the book into the record. "It was the best of times. It was the worst of times..." |

 | | Domdaniel: "us, the living" ...? Speak for yourself, Mr Lincoln Convertible. Some of us rather enjoy the afterlife, not to mention the attribute of nonexistence. <Jess> I did it. I finally did it. Well, I finally did *one* of the Long Finger Things. I got more. You'll see.
*We've got a live one here ...*
A Tale of Two Cities? You mean Dr Spooner's monumental work on the politics of commercial breast enhancement, written in late Victorian High Gonzo: Walter Pater meets Hunter S Thompson, and they don't hit it off ... |
