| Apr-17-09 | | hms123: <jess> Have you ever seen <A Matter of Life and Death> (aka <Stairway to Heaven>) with David Niven? There is a chess game and many references to Alekhine's <My Best Games> including a close-up of the book at the end. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038733/ |

| Apr-17-09 | | malthrope: <hms123: <jess> Have you ever seen <A Matter of Life and Death> (aka <Stairway to Heaven>) with David Niven? [...]> That's one of my favorite films. In fact almost everything that Powell & Pressburger ('Production of the Archers') produced and directed are all among my favorite films of all time! :)) It's a <must see> Jess... ;) Back in my day it wasn't even on video or laser discs. Hopefully, you can find it now. :D Al (see below) got me a pirate copy taped off the old cable Bravo channel. :) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v... Thanks to my late dear old friend Alan Pollard (USCF Senior Master) for turning me on to the Powell & Pressburger (Michael and Emeric respectively) movies... ;) A must view - the Powell & Pressburger images from 'A Matter Of Life And Death' (1946) // http://www.powell-pressburger.org/I... I'd be totally remiss if I didn't mention 'The Red Shoes' (1948) which is in my all time movie favorites! (Definitely 'top ten'). http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v... Another must view - the Powell & Pressburger images from 'The Red Shoes' (1948) // http://www.powell-pressburger.org/I... Oscars went to Hein Heckroth for Best Color Art Direction and Brian Easdale for Best Drama Music Score (performed by Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham). To say that I fell in *luv* with Moira Shearer (portrayed as 'Victoria Page' in the movie) would be an understatement. The cinematography is just breathtaking! :) OK - that's all for now... :^)

| Apr-17-09 | | hms123: <mal> I have a two-DVD set of Michael Powell's with <A matter of life and death> and <age of consent> with James Mason and an unclad Helen Mirren. The second movie isn't fabulous, but Dame Helen certainly is. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> Take a peep at this: Tal vs Miller, 1988 The *thing* on e6 isn't technically a Fawn Pawn -- it's not blockaded -- but just look at its power. An Atom Bomb Pawn? A rusty nail in the knee? Or, since it's on the sacred square e6, an Antimatter Frogspawn? |

| Apr-18-09 | | Travis Bickle: <jessicafischerqueen: Young Eric Clapton is the reason I can't listen to those "vintage headbangers" you posted above there <Travis>.
It's just not good enough after <Cream>.> Jess maybe I misunderstood your comment earlier. Did you mean "vintage headbangers" from the heavy metal I posted with Ted Nugent, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, etc. or did you mean the Clapton playlist I posted? I thought you meant you couldnt listen to Clapton after he left Cream, but now Im not sure what you meant. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: HI <Travanta>!
I meant the "Heavy Metals" concert.
But now that you mention it, for me, listening to <Clapton's> mainstream stuff is like a Dagger to my Heart. He only did one thing before that -- but he did it better than anyone, which was to "cross over" from a Blues training to "Pop music" and keep the integrity of the "guitar artist". He has a nice voice, but for me, "who cares"?
I always think, shut up and play your guiter. Did you forget how? And his hit about his little girl who died.
Ok it's awful to lose a loved one. But the song, as "music" is A TOTAL PIECE OF CRAP. An entry for "Worst Song Ever Written". Humorously, of course, the good thing about the headbanging music is that their fans would be likely to take the Eric Clapton number in question and set fire to it. In the same league as EBONY AND IVORY for unmitigated saccharine. Yes, like a dagger to my heart.... |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Thanks for the great <Genesis>!! Two of the greatest songs ever.
<The Lamb> is best with the old gang, however, although the "old gang" was fed up with Pete in 1978 I can tell you. Especially <Tony Banks>, whose hobby was getting furious with Pete for doing stuff without telling anyone. When Pete appeared on stage wearing a dress and a Fox's head, he hadn't bothered to tell the band. <Tony Banks> is still angry about that to this day. |

| Apr-18-09 | | crawfb5: I don't know if you like these kinds of puzzles or not, but as you are a Fischerphile, I thought you might like to take a look. In Edward Winter's <Chess Notes> column for 4/16/09 (http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/...), he shows a photo of Bobby in mid-game and asks the identity of the opponent. I have picked up a few clues to narrow the possibilities some, but I don't know the answer (yet). Winter will publish the answer later this month. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Big Crawdaddy>
Thanks for the puzzle invitation. It's always good to look at the young <Bobby> in a photo, if only because he is so attractive. I like the idea of these kinds of puzzle, but I don't know how to solve them. If I had to solve it, I would estimate <Bobby's> age- then click on every single one of his opponents in that age range and GOOGLE for a photo for each opponent. That would take a long time, and maybe there is no photo online. And maybe this game is not in our database. So I'm going to take a stab:
<Bruce Willis>
BTW <Howard> may one day ask you for a favor. That day may not come, but if it does, the Don expects that you will repay his kindness. |

| Apr-18-09 | | crawfb5: Ok, here are a couple of hints.
1. Judging from what I can see of Bobby's face, I'd estimate the photo to be early 1960s. He's also already switched over to suits, so it can't be too early. 2. I <think> the opponent's flag is Polish. At this point, he was only playing in international events. If you saw game photos from various events, they would have to have the particular type of flag holder shown, instead of, say, the more common hanging sign with name and flag. As far as <hms> is concerned, I am always willing to entertain offers I cannot understand... |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Well, with <Howard>, that's "de rigeur", it goes without saying. He seems to be going on about Canadian wildlife at the moment. So Polish guy from the 1960a.
That rules out <Bruce Willis>. <Poniatowski>? |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Blacksburghoff>
Oh my goodness, that home movie is wrong on so many levels. What if an unassuming businessman was taking an LSD trip, and just happened to get off at that subway stop? It could cause a few problems... |
|
| Apr-18-09 | | crawfb5: He's having trouble with his computer <moose>? Isn't <de rigeur mortise> used in building caskets? Maybe I'll go look at some game photos. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: 1.Yes. It's Gnu and he hasn't figured out how to work it yet. 2.Yes, it is. But mortar make it look nice than to hold the thing together. 3.Excellent idea. I believe <squab> are just coming in to season again. |

| Apr-18-09 | | crawfb5: I actually <do> have a photo with a live quail standing on my shoulder. I once managed a small quail breeding operation and some of them became rather tame, what with my animal magnetism and all. |

 | | Domdaniel: I *think* Fischer only played in one olympiad USA-Poland match, and he had White. Monaco is also among the countries with a two-tone flag. Fischer hardly ever castled queenside with black. Maybe he was sitting in somebody else's seat for a prank. But if you want to trawl through olympiad data, you'll find staggering amounts of it at http://www.olimpbase.org/index.html... |
|
Apr-18-09
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Coincidentally, so do I. I once managed a large otter breeding operation. |
|
| Apr-18-09 | | crawfb5: Ok, I think I now know Fischer's opponent, and the game in question. The answer is posted in my forum just in case somebody else wants to do some digging on their own. |
