May-05-09  blacksburg: <Is there a lot of "word discussion" to go along with the diagrams and printed lines from the games?>

yeah, OMGP has lots and lots of words and stories and anecdotes, and there is a reasonable amount of explanation to go with the variations in the games. i have to admit, though, many of the variations are over my head.

i know that there has been a lot of controversy and criticism regarding the OMGP's, but i like them a lot. i would suggest picking up 1 volume, maybe the one on Fischer, and seeing how you like it before buying all of them.

Hey I'm thinking of getting Kasparov's <My Not Quite as Great as Me Predecessors>.

Do you recommend it?

Is there a lot of "word discussion" to go along with the diagrams and printed lines from the games?>

I have the first book.On about pg.60 now.It is a good overview of chess history if that is what you're also looking for.If you want lines, they have a whole bunch of analysis lines. The downside though is that Kasparov does not give a bunch of explanation to those lines. He gives some of his opinions on the games though.Overall,I think it is a good book.

jessicafischerqueen: Thanks <Doctor>- looks like the <Center> was put to good use analzying a game of great subtlety.

Check out today's puzzle-

Look at the move played just before the puzzle move- it's inaccurate

Then, look at the move played just after the puzzle move- it is also inaccurate (since it loses almost immediately by force).

But there is an alternate defence. Black should still win, but he has to work for it.

See if you can find the alternate defence and then beat your Engine against it!!

I've been working on it for over an hour and the win is subtle and you have to really plan it out-

Move order is critical in it.

May-07-09  achieve: <Jess> Thanks for this Hot Puzzle Tip!

You're right bxc4 loses instantly, so Rc1 must be tried... I have been at this for about 10 minutes and thought of a big trade off and that I would win the pawn race as Black.

But this seems to me the crucial position:

click for larger view

With White just having recaptered the B on <f2>...

Now - can Black play Kf7 here, with the aim of moving in with the King and getting to the base of the white chain on <g3> and winning? Or can white mop up the c2-pawn and be back in time?

Have to leave home soon, but am I warm?

If not please let me know but don't give the full answer; I'd like to give it another look, well COUNT, when I get back in about 4 hours from now...

May-07-09  achieve: <Jess> This is how i won it against my engine, with a timely ...a5 & ...Rc3, and White is powerless against the K-side actions by Black.

Here's the line without annotation as I gotta go now. I think I got this down...

  jessicafischerqueen: <...a5 & ...Rc3, >

Well that's why they pay you the big money <Dr. Euwe>.

After an hour of trying other <not winning> avenues- I learned that not only are both of these moves necessary, but they must also be played in the <correct order>.

Finding out the WHY of the order- as opposed to just finding out you need to do it this way-

Is more difficult for me.

jessicafischerqueen: In fact, after these two moves in the correct order- rightfully given the !!- there are a variety of different ways to win.

And you still have to be careful and think ahead- it's possible to boot it from here even.

heh

Ok now look at the move that starts the original puzzle sequence-

Black's original <Bxf1>.

That not only doesn't win for Black, it gives White an advantage, if defended properly on White's next move.

Perhaps Rf2xc2 is worth a shot?

  jessicafischerqueen: Yes

<Bxf1 Rfxc2> is better than <Bxf1 Rcxf1>=

Although I'm no longer certain White has an advantage.

It's for sure better than the text move from the game, because in the text move, Black has a forced win against any defence, if Black can work out the details to the best defence- as you did.

And I did as well, but it took me a long time (over an hour)to figure out how with trial and error against my Engine.

Rather than say "White has an advantage," I'd now say "White has a better chance of surviving" -- maybe a draw is possible or even a win if Black makes a mistake.

For example, after White captures <Rfxc2>, the Black Bishop must retreat, and then

<Rc7> picks up Black's <a-pawn> by force.

Pretty sure about this-
