May-07-09  hms123: <jess> <Crumbs> was an expression of dismay at not having access to perogies.

We have all sorts of ethnic food here: there are over 100 ethnic groups here. You can get Japanese, Thai, Korean, Ethiopian, Kurdish, Persian, Mexican, Cuban, Italian, Russian, and bad Chinese food just to mention some of the possibilities.

We take my mom out every Saturday for lunch to one of the myriad of little ethnic restaurants. No perogies, though. Crumbs.

  jessicafischerqueen: <statistics>

You just reminded me of the most astonishing things I ever read.

Ironically, it was in one of those <____ for TOTAL MORONS> series.

It was <Quantum Physics for TOTAL MORONS> and it even had cartoons in it, but I still found it very hard to follow.

But one part- <Einstein> coming up with an equation based on an <individual case> that should be statistically impossible:

Ok <Brownian movement> explains the even distribution of gas molecules inside a balloon. The balloon has a smooth surface because the random pinging of the gas molecules inside make an "even distribution" of force by hitting the inside of the balloon in an even fashion.

But <Einstein> made a thought experiment- the molecular movement is <random>-

Meaning, that it is <technically possible> for all of the gas molecules to collect in one tiny corner of the balloon in <an individual case>.

The odds against this actually happening are "next to impossible" but not mathematically impossible.

And from this idea, <Einstein> made an important contribution to understanding the motion of atoms and subatomic particles in terms of probabilities.

What that contribution actually was, however, I never quite understood.

One easy way is to go to any game page and play the moves yourself. Then you <right-click> on the diagram and select <copy position>. Then you just <paste> using <ctrl-v> into the kibitz box.

jessicafischerqueen: <H> I know- but you were trying to get away with a pun there as well.

No trying to deny it!

Your pun didn't fit in with the "perogy gestalt."

It would have been more appropriate for, say, dry scones, or salt smelt.

May-07-09  hms123: <jess> I read a similar comment about all of the air molecules moving up to one corner of the ceiling. I breathe easier knowing that it's very unlikely.

Einstein never accepted the statistical implications of his own theory. Strange fellow.

Here is step by step how to write FEN strings in the Kibbutz boxes here to make the cool chess diagrams.

Just read the short article, and test it out by posting some FEN strings. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forsyt... As soon as you post a kibbutz with a FEN string, it will magically turn in to a chessboard.

May-07-09  hms123: <jess> To quote the cg folks from a few days ago: <no pun in ten did>.

BTW, I checked out the recent flap at <Mrs.A's> place. Astounding. especially the guy who threatened to return to the Fischer page if he couldn't be a total jerk at Mrs. A's.

GHOD

May-07-09  madlydeeply: thanks hms. I'm on the verge of possibly contributing something worthwhile. I dunno though I might lose heart.

jessicafischerqueen: <H> well, they hung me by my own petard. I was actually being hypocritical and they called me on it.
May-07-09  hms123: <jess> I assume that cg posting guidelines apply--though no doubt with some extra leeway. I would leave it to cg to worry about it.

jessicafischerqueen: <H-Bomb> the odds of an administrator even glancing at <Mrs. Alekhine> forum are NIL in my opinion.

I'm thinking of getting a couple more Premium Forums this August when I"m home- I have some things I want to construct maybe.

Possibly sauna, arboretum... something jaunty and fey...

May-07-09  hms123: <jess> Isn't that <<hoist> on one's own petard>?

<petard> is derived from the French <peter>.

Etymologically yours,
Crumbs

  jessicafischerqueen: It better not be!

If so, you are in violation of the poster guidelines.

Speaking of which I want to get a giant Bobby Fischer poster. Do you think they have them on <e-bay>?

May-07-09  hms123: <jess> It is. http://www.etymonline.com/index.php...

jessicafischerqueen: Oh yes of course you are correct-

Hoist not hang because it is in fact "giving someone a wedgie". You have to grasp and pull upwards.

Well actually that one's called the "full wedgie" and sometimes they even hang you on to a coat rack with it.

Not that I'd know...

  jessicafischerqueen: <H> yes, I know.

I'm still (barely) one step ahead of you, as the posting record here, and the Major, will confirm...

May-07-09  hms123: I don't know about e-bay, but they seem to have everything. It's worth a try.

The easiest thing to do would be to get a picture of Fischer and have it blown up to poster size, then mounted on posterboard.

jessicafischerqueen: DANG IT that happened again. The lag time on the post.

I got my penultimate post in before your ultimate post- but now they are arranged in reverse order.

Consequently, I no longer have proof I was "one step ahead."

You win-- this time, <tie master>...

May-07-09  hms123: <jess> I am off to tennis again. I got rained out yesterday, but today looks nice enough. See you later.

So you are officially admitting your nickname of <H-Bomb> is apropos?

Ha! I win this time, <coat master>...

May-07-09  benjinathan: <Didn't you get sunk by the <Bismarck's> escorting cruiser the <Prinz Eugen>?>

There is debate about that. The offcial enquiry said the Bismark sunk her, but obviously that could be because it would be embarassing to admit that a cruiser sank the pride of the Royal Navy.

The bookstore is near the annex, yes. On Bloor in between Spadina and Bathurst.

The stor has a lot of remainder chess books at low (for new) prices. For example the standard Everyman opening books are $10 generally.

Perhaps on your way back from the ROK one day you can stop in.

May-07-09  madlydeeply: i thought the petard was the middle age bombs that would often go off and fling the bombardeer into the air thus hoist by his own petard.

then my friend told me it was a fart.

he usually says smartypants things. Not that time

I read that definition in the old role-playing-game melee/wizards rules.

SteveJackson Hooha!!!

May-07-09  blacksburg: hey <JFQ>, do you know this Korean dude <Hong Man Choi>?

http://fiveouncesofpain.com/2009/04...

he's gonna fight Jose Canseco.

<HONG MAN CHOI>!!!!

coolest name ever.
